Why Commitment is the Key Component of Soft Leadership?—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

“A man who won't die for something is not fit to live.” —Martin Luther King, Jr.

Soft leaders have another great characteristic of commitment, which makes them command respect among others. It is their firm commitment to their cause that wins acclaim from others. Hence, let us briefly look at commitment in this regard.

What is Commitment?

There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when circumstances permit. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results." —Unknown.

Everybody is committed to their family and work. Some people are more committed to their causes and principles. However, commitment is something beyond that. Commitment means persistence with a purpose. Commitment means promising a word and living up to it despite the odds. It creates goodwill and respect. It makes people stand out.

The leaders have to be highly committed whenever they say something as people are always smart to scan leaders from various perspectives. Failing to stand by commitment leads to a credibility crisis and people will not take leaders seriously in the future.

If you want your life to be successful you have to be committed. For instance, when you love your family, you need to be firm in demonstrating your commitment. Commitment consumes your time. But it builds longevity in relations. Not only in your family life, but also at the workplace if you as a leader demonstrate your commitment, people trust you and treat you with respect. It is rightly said, that people don't care how big you are. They only care how committed you are. We find several families breaking due to a lack of commitment. We also find teams getting crashed at the workplace due to the lack of commitment of a few people. Commitment is the bridge between word and deed. A firm commitment to your word and work makes you a successful leader.

Is Commitment Important?

James Womack rightly said, "Commitment unlocks the doors of imagination, allows vision, and gives us the "right stuff" to turn our dreams into reality." Commitment is a must if you want to grow. Commitment is imperative if you want to excel as a leader. Commitment is essential if you want to achieve success in your life. Some people failed several times but achieved success in the later part of their lives because of their commitment and imagination. Anthony Robbins asserts, "The only limit to your impact is your imagination and commitment." If you look at Col Sanders the founder of KFC, he tasted failure several times. He was a disaster academically. He failed in his endeavors. But his commitment to make it big made him a legendary entrepreneur at the age of 61.

Commitment helps you unlock your hidden potential. It takes you to greater heights of glory and success. People respect the leaders who are committed to their ideas and words. People respect the leaders who stand by their words and stick to them despite stiff opposition. People admire the leaders who persist with a purpose.

A Take-Home Message

Unless commitment is made, there are only promises and hopes; but no plans." —Peter F. Drucker.

Leadership and commitment are intertwined. They are the two sides of a coin. A coin is incomplete without having two sides. Similarly, leadership is ineffective without committing. It is rightly said, "If you don't stand for something...you'll fall for anything". Hence, commitment is the key component of soft leadership.
