"Writing a book is an adventure. To begin with, it is a toy and an amusement. Then it becomes a mistress, then it becomes a master, then it becomes a tyrant. The last phase is that just as you are about to be reconciled to your servitude, you kill the monster and fling him to the public.” ―Winston Churchill
My publisher asked me to market my books aggressively to increase sales. I am not an expert in marketing but I am fairly an expert in writing about branding because branding is my passion. Most people are shy to market themselves for fear of being perceived wrongly. In this digital world, branding, building buzz, and marketing are essential to stand out from others. In this regard, we will draw a blueprint to build buzz and market your books aggressively.
A Blueprint to Market Your Books
"The act of reading a book is the best example of distance learning possible because reading not only triumphs over the limitations of space and co-presence but of time as well." —Neil Postman
Writing books is highly challenging because it involves immense creativity, effort, and persistence. You have to overcome innumerable challenges to publish your books. After publishing the books the authors must take the initiative to market their books online and offline. It is the responsibility of both publishers and authors to build buzz and market books to reach out to larger readers. In this way, authors enjoy sharing their knowledge while publishers enjoy earning money. Here are some tips to market your books.
Identify the potential market for your book to target the right audience.
Create a website for the book.
Ensure that your book is available in different versions including print edition, eBook, and audiobook to reach out to various categories of readers.
Update your Amazon page and other book-selling pages with the details of the book and endorsers.
Run a preorder campaign.
Prepare a free chapter and approach prestigious magazines, journals podcasts, and radio hosts to feature an interview about the book.
Explore guest blogging to reach out to different channels.
Request the endorsers from your book to spread the word about the book on their social network.
Request your friends from social networks, especially LinkedIn whom you helped in the past to spread the word about your book.
Get as many book reviews as possible.
Participate in live events.
Deliver presentations on your book to raise awareness. Provide a complimentary copy to the participants in your workshops and training programs.
Shortlist the best chapters from the book and publish them in prestigious magazines with a published link to the book at the end to enable the readers to purchase copies.
Send bulk mail to your connections to purchase the copy.
Create the right hashtags for your book. Leverage the social media platforms successfully.
Emphasize more on pull-marketing and less on push-marketing.
Collaborate with your publisher to hold book signings at bookstores and conferences.
Don't encourage paid reviews which are usually done by a few eminent authors with deep pockets. Some authors pump their money to become bestsellers instantly. They adopt all types of gimmicks to market and win awards. Ultimately it is the essence of the book that matters. The readers are intelligent enough to assess the genuine authors. So, be authentic to achieve credibility and visibility.
Conclusion
“If there is a book that you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, you must be the one to write it.” —Toni Morrison
“Writing a book is a tremendous experience. It pays off intellectually. It clarifies your thinking. It builds credibility. It is a living engine of marketing and idea spreading, working every day to deliver your message with authority. You should write one.” ― Seth Godin, How the Fierce Handle Fear: Secrets to Succeeding in Challenging Times
Authors must appreciate the fact that they can survive only when the publishers survive. So, they must take the initiative to promote and sell their books through different channels. In this cut-throat competitive world, you must follow the road less traveled. You must identify innovative tools and techniques regularly to stand out from others. To conclude, adopt innovative strategies to build buzz and market your books to excel as a bestselling author globally. Good luck!
“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said Jojen. The man who never reads lives only one.” ―George R.R. Martin
“Work is love made visible. And if you can't work with love, but only with distaste, it is better that you should leave your work and sit at the gate of the temple and take alms of the people who work with joy” ―Khalil Gibran
