“Do We Overestimate about Ourselves and Underestimate Others?”– Professor M.S.Rao

“Outstanding leaders go out of their way to boost the self-esteem of their personnel. If people believe in themselves, it’s amazing what they can accomplish.” —Sam Walton

It is observed that most people often overestimate about their capabilities, competencies, knowledge, skills and abilities and underestimate others’ due to their superiority complex. It is also observed that a few people underestimate their own strengths and overestimate others’ strengths due to their inferiority complex. In fact, both are wrong. What is essential is to estimate accurately about oneself by weighing strengths and weaknesses and respecting others’ knowledge, skills and abilities.

People must have self-esteem. They must value and love themselves. Only when they love themselves, they will be able to love the people around them. Mark McKeon rightly quoted, "Don't worry about impressing others, impress yourself. Who are you trying to please, anyway?" Never compare with others. If you compare yourself with others, you are insulting yourself. Remember, you are God’s gift to this world. Nobody can be like you and you cannot be like anybody else.  Denis Waitley once remarked, "If you have real internal value, you don't need a loud, expensive imitation."

Excessive ego and hubris are obstacles to one’s advancement. They lead to ineffective interpersonal relations and invite criticism from others. Hence, respect the strengths of others with an open mind and with a big heart. It requires a positive and right attitude on the part of the people. It paves the way to building soft skills and improved relations around them. To conclude, don’t underestimate or overestimate yourself. Learn to appreciate your strengths and also of others’ strengths to grow as a successful person and as a good leader.

"The most influential person who will talk to you all day is you, so you should be very careful about what you say to you!" -- Zig Ziglar
