A Blueprint to Build Resilient Communities Globally—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

Life is like a game where you seek to overcome the obstacles that stand in the way of achieving your goals. You get better at this game through practice. The game consists of a series of choices that have consequences. You can’t stop the problems and choices from coming at you, so it’s better to learn how to deal with them.” —Ray Dalio

Communities must rise to the occasion during disasters and catastrophes. They must be resilient to overcome the challenges arising from nature, external distractions, and disturbances. In this regard, we will discuss building resilient communities globally to bounce back and bounce forward aggressively.

Resilience is the ability of individuals, organizations, and communities to bounce back, survive, and succeed when the shocks and stresses are stacked against them. There are several definitions of resilience in different contexts. Elizabeth Edwards defines, "Resilience is accepting your new reality, even if it's less good than the one you had before. You can fight it, you can do nothing but scream about what you've lost, or you can accept that and try to put together something that's good." Resilience is a top priority for global organizations that serve humanitarian action and development.

A Blueprint to Build Resilient Communities Globally

Develop resilience and be brave. There are days when it is very discouraging. You have to develop personal resilience to environmental things that come along. If you let every single environmental challenge knock you off your game, it’s going to be very, very hard.” ―Renee James

The rapid growth in technology, the growing global economy, and urbanization have aggravated the risk for communities and nations globally. The communities must learn how to cope up with shocks and stresses arising from artificial intelligence and the fourth industrial revolution. They must be equipped with innovative tools and techniques to enable them to persist, recover, or even thrive amid disruption. Here is a blueprint to build resilient communities globally:

  • Accept the fact that disasters cannot be averted. Hence, have the right attitude and develop a positive mindset to be prepared for disasters.

  • Admit that risk is an integral part of life. So, be prepared for it.

  • Be transparent to build trust because trusting relationships between members of a community increase resilience.

  • Involve the community members and stakeholders actively. They must set their differences aside in the interest of a common good.

  • Harness the power of networks for shared discovery and collaboration.

  • Identify community assets and keep them ready mentally.

  • Make decisions with your head, heart, and gut keeping the larger interests of your community. Remember, it is more important to save lives than assets during disasters.

  • Keep people before the profit.

  • Value relationships. Next to God is your neighbor. Treat your community as a family. Come forward to protect if any one of them is in problems to build strong community leadership.

  • Leveraging technology has thrown several opportunities to humankind. It is a fact that technology has become a powerful tool to build social resilience.

Resilient systems must be a blend of both micro and macro structures to embrace change and adapt aggressively. In a nutshell, to build resilient communities globally, you must be agile and active; analyze and understand the risk; connect and communicate with your community; inspire and engage them; be proactive and synergize them; take action keeping the larger interests of your community; take feedback, and learn lessons to be prepared better for such disasters in future.

Conclusion

We have no time to lose … The global thermostat continues to rise. Each month brings new temperature records and more floods, droughts, and extreme weather events. Vulnerability to climate risk continues to increase. This translates to greater humanitarian need and more economic losses." —Ban Ki-moon

The disasters may arise due to climate change, global warming, rising sea levels, melting glaciers, increasing water salinity, tsunami-like situations, or cyberattacks by black hats. Keeping in view of the current complexities and technological inventions, it is essential to prepare every global citizen to be resilient to overcome the eventualities. Remember, if the communities are resilient the risk decreases.

In this era of the disruptive world, it is essential to focus on what matters most; shed what is irrelevant and useless, and communicate with stakeholders effectively to build a resilient world. To summarize, communities must adapt to changing circumstances. The resilient communities see and seize the opportunities in the eye of the storm. A more resilient world is possible and feasible if we work together toward it. To conclude, building resilient communities requires coordinated efforts from all stakeholders and shared responsibilities at local, national, and global levels; and from local communities, government, nonprofits, intellectuals, thought leaders, and global leaders.

Leadership Lessons from Tiger Woods—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

Look, there are no shortcuts in golf, and there are no shortcuts in life. You have to work for it. Dream big and keep your dreams for yourself. Because the dreams that you have are those things that separate you from others. If you give up your dream, you give up hope. And without hope, you are nothing.” ―Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods rose like a phoenix in golf history. Although almost everyone appreciated his talents and abilities in golf, they doubted his comeback because of his past sex scandals and controversies. He proved his critics wrong by winning the Masters golf tournament on April 14, 2019. Presently people appreciate his epic performance. He was like a cannon on the battlefield when he entered the golf scene but fizzled out during the course of his professional career and bounced back with his grit and determination.

Tiger Woods: A Case Study on Resilience

You’re going to make mistakes. The key is to learn from them as fast as possible and make changes as soon as you can. That’s not always easy to do because ego and pride get in the way, but you have to put all that aside and look at the big picture.” ―Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods was bedridden due to his back injury. His family life was in shambles. His morale was all time low. There was no support for him literally. His comeback is one of the most inspiring stories in sports history. He proved that everything is possible in the world when you are passionate about your profession and work hard relentlessly with commitment and excellence. Here are some leadership lessons to learn from his life.

  • Dream big to achieve big.

  • Have strategic planning and focus on your core strengths and invest your efforts consistently.

  • Visualize yourself as a successful person.

  • Be resilient. Treat failure as a comma, not a full stop. Remember that every failure is a stepping stone to your success.

  • Raise your bar.

  • Be passionate, patient and persistent.

  • Take feedback, learn lessons from failures, and reinvent your strategies to stay relevant and successful.

  • Never give up.

In a nutshell, don’t criticize, complain and condemn others. Apologize when you are wrong. Take remedial action. Be part of the solution, not the problem. Be simple and humble. Remember that no person is entirely good and no person is entirely bad. At times, circumstances compel people to do certain wrong things.

Convert Your Scars into Stars

It’s ok to fail. Failing does not shape your personality; it’s how you react upon your failure. Do you dust yourself off and mope or do you dust yourself off and come back stronger the next time? Eventually, you will win. It may not happen the next time, it may take a little time but you will win in the end.” ―Tiger Woods

Nothing will stop the people whose dreams are bigger and stronger. Appreciate Tiger Woods’ grit, determination, perseverance, and resilience. Although his life was ridden with several controversies he bounced back successfully thus becoming a source of inspiration for many people in the world. Therefore, learn lessons from his life to become a successful human and sportsperson. To conclude, look at the rising sun, not the setting sun. There is always a silver lining over the dark cloud. Convert your scars into stars.

There’s nothing wrong with having your goals really high and trying to achieve them. That’s the fun part. You may come up short. I’ve come up short on a lot on my goals, but it’s always fun to try and achieve them.” ―Tiger Woods

Nothing is impossible, the word itself says 'I'm possible'!” ―Audrey Hepburn

"I want to be what I've always wanted to be: dominant" ―Tiger Woods

People don’t understand that when I was growing up, I was never the most talented and I was not the biggest. I was never the fastest. I certainly was never the strongest. The only thing I had was my work ethic, and that’s what has gotten me this far.” ―Tiger Woods

Never listen to other people’s expectations. You should live your own life and live up to your own expectations; those are the only things that I care about.” ―Tiger Woods

You’ve got to stay patient, stay in the moment, and keep grinding. You never know what can happen.” ―Tiger Woods

The only reason why I enter an event is to win. There’s no sense in going into a tournament if you don’t believe you can win it.” ―Tiger Woods

If you’re not nervous, it means you don’t care. I’ve always said that the day I’m not nervous playing is the day that I quit.” ―Tiger Woods

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) must Intervene to Check Corruption and Irregularities in Private Colleges—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” ―Mahatma Gandhi

Presently the scenario in the private pharmacy, medical and engineering colleges in some of the states of India is terrible. There is no quality of education imparted to the students and the educators are not treated with dignity and honor. The educators who question the system are removed arbitrarily. Faculty don't receive salaries on time. Worse, they don't get a salary when they leave these private colleges. The owners of these private colleges file wrong cases against leaving faculty to avoid paying salaries. Some of the senior professors and principals are retained by force in services without paying their salaries as the new professors and principals are unwilling to join these rogue colleges. The serving principals and professors are caught between the devil and the deep sea. They have their family obligations and financial commitments and are concerned about the muscle power of the owners of these colleges. Since they are intellectuals they cannot stoop low like the owners of these private colleges. These notorious owners are noted for using local goons to settle the scores and crush the opposition and rebellion at any cost. They have nexus with top politicians as they fund political parties regularly. They have money power and muscle power but lack of moral power.

Usually, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), India’s federal investigative agency enters to check corruption and irregularities in the Central Government. It doesn’t enter into State Government without the latter’s permission. In rare cases, CBI can enter to check corruption and irregularities in private pharmacy, medical and engineering colleges. Presently there is a lot of corruption and irregularities in the private colleges in India. Some of the state governments including Telangana conducted special task forces to check corruption and irregularities in these private colleges. These unscrupulous colleges are notorious for hiring the faculty before the inspections to meet the requirements of their affiliated universalities and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and firing the faculty after the inspections. These colleges adopt the philosophy of ‘use and throw’ of faculty which must end immediately.

Since there are many irregularities and complaints, CBI must enter to check the corruption and irregularities in these private colleges. It helps ensure a transparent system where students get a good education as per the standards; and the faculty and non-teaching employees get their salaries on time. It can also check cheating by these private colleges who avoid paying salaries to faculty when the latter leaves their colleges. It eliminates the arbitrary removal of faculty from services without addressing the grievances. Presently some private colleges in Telangana State don’t pay summer salaries to their faculty. These colleges cheat faculty by not paying salaries for many months. If faculty complains to their affiliated universities and regulating bodies, their lives are under threat as the owners of these private colleges have close connections with local goons and mafia. They also have nexus with top politicians. They fund all political parties during elections. Hence, the faculty finds it very tough to work in an unhealthy academic ambiance. Since educators are intellectuals, they cannot stoop low like the owners of these private colleges who behave like goons with the faculty on the college campuses. Hence, there is an urgent need for CBI to enter into such private colleges to address the grievances of faculty and students. Remember, the day corruption enters into Indian Armed Forces and Indian educational institutions, the country will collapse. Hence, I implore CBI to intervene to check corrupt colleges and cancel their affiliations to infuse confidence in students and faculty to ensure quality education to take India to great heights globally. Jai Hind!

Men are Smart but Women are Smarter—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D. #HeForShe 21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

Can you imagine what the world would be like if women, who constitute almost half of the global population, had access to education and opportunities and were allowed to contribute their best? We would achieve prosperity globally in all spheres.” ―Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D., #HeForShe

There is a heated debate between men and women regarding their strengths and weaknesses, competencies, and capabilities. It is always a moot point who is superior and smarter sex. I have made a few observations during my 45 years of experience in various capacities in teaching, training, consultancy, and research. Here goes about men and women.

It is observed that when a man communicates with a woman, he often concentrates more on her physical features, such as her smile and her great looks. In contrast, when a woman communicates with a man, she often looks beyond the man's face. She concentrates more on genuineness in his conversations, emotions, and feelings—the intensity and the energy of voice and imagines and interprets the man accordingly. She also gauges whether the man speaks from his heart or head. The famous psychologist Sigmund Freud once remarked, "Despite my thirty years of research into the feminine soul, I have not been able to answer... the great question that has never been answered: what does a woman want?" Probably Sigmund Freud focused more on the physical appearances of women rather than on reading their egos, emotions, and feelings, which led to such a comment!

Women are often more assertive than men, who want to prove their point without hurting others and respecting others' points of view. They protect their rights without hurting the rights of others. They know the art of saying 'No' firmly but politely. They can eat the cake and have it too, which is often impossible for men.

Women often avoid conflicts initially. If the conflicts are thrust upon them repeatedly, they take it forward and make sure that the conflicts are resolved amicably. Since men are the stronger sex, they often think of attacking others physically rather than talking politely while resolving conflicts. Women often resolve conflicts through consensus and collaboration rather than competition, compromise, and accommodation.

During communication, men are smart at looking at body language, oral language, and voice modulation, and evaluating others. On the other hand, women are smarter by not only looking at these overt cues but also at covert cues such as feelings, emotions, and egos, which is known as hidden data of communication. It is the key thing that makes the difference between men and women. That is why it is said that women are good at interpersonal skills and soft skills. Although women are physically weaker, God compensated them with these extra abilities and skills.

Often, women can sustain pain without reflecting externally, whereas men demonstrate it externally. Women are often good at emotional intelligence. However, men tend to exhibit aggressiveness due to biological reasons. Women are good at multitasking, while men are not.

During my training and teaching sessions, I have made one more specific observation about women. They ask fewer questions and grasp information better than men. They also digest complicated content easily. However, men often request me to repeat the various aspects of the content as they often fail to grasp it. The majority of women know how to relate the delivered content with real-life events and experiences, thus acquiring the essence easily. Hence, they know how to apply their knowledge better than men, who often find it tough to comprehend the content itself and forget about the application of knowledge that comes in a later stage.

Research reveals that the majority of men mature more slowly than women mentally. It is very tough to predict exactly at what age a man's maturity is equal to a woman's age of maturity. Women are persistent and persuasive. They are more creative than men and are better listeners. However, they take fewer risks than men. Above all, women can blend hard and soft skills in greater proportion than men for professional success.

Men often complain that it is very tough to predict women. They also say that it is easy to know the depth of an ocean but difficult to know the depth of a woman's heart. Even great intellectuals such as Sigmund Freud and George Bernard Shaw commented on women in a similar way. Hence, next time men communicate with women, they should pay more attention to women's feelings, emotions, and egos rather than their physical appearances, which would help bridge the gap between men and women and make men as intelligent as women.
