How to Build Resilient Communities Globally?—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

Life is like a game where you seek to overcome the obstacles that stand in the way of achieving your goals. You get better at this game through practice. The game consists of a series of choices that have consequences. You can’t stop the problems and choices from coming at you, so it’s better to learn how to deal with them.” —Ray Dalio

Communities must rise to the occasion during disasters and catastrophes. They must be resilient to overcome the challenges arising from nature, external distractions, and disturbances. In this regard, we will discuss building resilient communities globally to bounce back and bounce forward aggressively.

Resilience is the ability of individuals, organizations, and communities to bounce back, survive, and succeed when the shocks and stresses are stacked against them. There are several definitions of resilience in different contexts. Elizabeth Edwards defines “Resilience is accepting your new reality, even if it's less good than the one you had before. You can fight it, you can do nothing but scream about what you've lost, or you can accept that and try to put together something that's good.” Resilience is a top priority for global organizations that serve humanitarian action and development.

A Blueprint to Build Resilient Communities Globally

The rapid growth in technology, the growing global economy, and urbanization have aggravated the risk for communities and nations globally. The communities must learn how to cope with shocks and stresses arising from artificial intelligence and the fourth industrial revolution. They must be equipped with innovative tools and techniques to enable them to persist, recover, or even thrive amid disruption. Here is a blueprint to build resilient communities globally:

  • Accept the fact that disasters cannot be averted. Hence, have the right attitude and develop a positive mindset to be prepared for disasters.

  • Admit that risk is an integral part of life. So, be prepared for it.

  • Be transparent to build trust because trusting relationships between members of a community increase resilience.

  • Involve the community members and stakeholders actively. They must set their differences aside in the interest of the common good.

  • Harness the power of networks for shared discovery and collaboration.

  • Identify community assets and keep them ready mentally.

  • Make decisions with your head, heart, and gut, keeping the larger interests of your community. Remember, it is more important to save lives than assets during disasters.

  • Keep people before the profit.

  • Value relationships. Next to God is your neighbor. Treat your community as a family. Come forward to protect if any one of them is in trouble to build strong community leadership.

  • Leverage technology that has created several opportunities for humankind. It is a fact that technology has become a powerful tool to build social resilience.

The resilient systems must be a blend of both micro and macro structures to embrace change and adapt aggressively. In a nutshell, to build resilient communities globally, you must be agile and active; analyze and understand the risk; connect and communicate with your community; inspire and engage them; be proactive and synergize them; take action to keep the larger interests of your community; take feedback, and learn lessons to be prepared better for such disasters in future.

Build Resilient Communities

The disasters may arise due to climate change, global warming, rising sea levels, melting glaciers, increasing water salinity, tsunami-like situations, or cyberattacks by black hats. Given the current complexities and technological inventions, it is essential to prepare every global citizen to be resilient to overcome the eventualities. Remember, if the communities are resilient, the risk decreases.

In this era of a disruptive world, it is essential to focus on what matters most; shed what is irrelevant and useless, and communicate with stakeholders effectively to build a resilient world. To summarize, communities must adapt to changing circumstances. Resilient communities see and seize the opportunities in the eye of the storm. A more resilient world is possible and feasible if we work together toward it. To conclude, building resilient communities requires coordinated efforts from all stakeholders and shared responsibilities at local, national, and global levels; and from local communities, government, nonprofits, intellectuals, thought leaders, and global leaders.

Stages of Life and Challenges in Each Stage—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

A butterfly does not return to a caterpillar after it is mature. We must learn to grow and evolve into a stronger, wiser, and better version of ourselves. Life occurs in stages, and taking a step at a time is key to learning and growing." ―Kemi Sogunle

There are several stages of life. Individuals think differently at each stage of their lives. In childhood, children crave security, attention, and appreciation from their parents. At a young age, they dream about their future. After marriage, they encounter several challenges and understand the world practically. In the Middle Ages, they thought about their present and survival. In old age, they think about their past. Precisely, everyone thinks about the future in their youth, about the present in their middle age, and about the past in their old age.

The Role of Parents in Bringing Up Their Children

People undergo several sequential steps in maturing from infancy, including childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, middle age, and old age. Each stage presents distinct challenges that require a person to amend how they think and act. The motive for seeking significant change in a person's manner of perceiving the world and behaving varies. Alteration of a person's mindset can commence with a growing sense of awareness that a person is dissatisfied with an aspect of his or her life, which causes a person consciously to consider amending their lifestyle." ―Kilroy J. Oldster, Dead Toad Scrolls

It is a well-admitted fact that loving parents care for their children. They bring up their children with ethics and etiquette. They equip their children with character and offer a good education. They handhold their children until the latter become confident, competent, and independent.

The role of parents is highly challenging. At each stage of life, they encounter innumerable challenges to bring up their children. After marriage, the couple intends to have their children. After the birth of children, they become parents and are more responsible. They walk their talk to become role models for their children. They are concerned about bringing up their children. They think about offering quality education to their children. They ensure that their children perform well both in curricular and extracurricular activities to excel as healthy citizens. When children reach adolescence, parents counsel their children to improve their personality, attitude, and behavior in the right direction to adjust to the culture and get along with society. Parents are concerned about the careers of their children when they later pass out of their educational institutions. After children enter the right employment and choose their careers successfully, parents are concerned about the marriage of their children. They ensure that their children get the right companions to lead a happy and exciting life. Parents are concerned about their old age as their children grow along with their children. Gradually, parents become old and worry about themselves in old age. Due to old age or illness, they depend on their children. If parents are blessed with good children, their old age will pass off peacefully. Every stage in life throws challenges. There are mistakes made during the journey and lessons learned in life. The ultimate aim of every parent is to leave a better legacy to the next generation.

Life is Great!

Every stage of life is unique. At any age and stage of life, there are obstacles and opportunities, trials, and triumphs. Never allow the negative to bring you to a sudden halt. Make the most of the positive opportunities and stay positive.” ―Lailah Gifty Akita

Life is a gift from God. Every individual must pass each stage successfully to reach the final stage to enjoy every moment in life. There is no shortcut to this great life. Everyone encounters failures, insults, and humiliations to evolve as simple and humble humans. In a nutshell, everyone encounters the lows of life and enjoys the highs of life to provide meaning to their lives.

"Growing old is humbling, and it takes an effort to accomplish this stage of life with dignity.” ―Kilroy J. Oldster, Dead Toad Scrolls

How to Prepare for the USA Visa Interview for Parents(B1/B2)?—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

“I have a dream of getting a visa, which is a dream that many people have, so they can leave their countries to come to someplace else, specifically, they want to come to the United States.” —Juan Luis Guerra

My friend and his wife wanted to apply for a B1/B2 visa to visit their son, who works in the USA with an H-1B visa. Since I underwent this process on October 29, 2019, they asked me the procedure to apply and the tips to face the interview. I shared with them the following information.

First, identify the authentic agent to assist you with the entire process. You can also do it by yourself if you are acquainted with the process and confident about the procedure. However, it is advisable to apply for the visa through an authentic agent as he or she is a professional and can provide you with the right procedure to apply and the strategy to adopt to come out with flying colors from the interview.

Application Procedure

Future is an unknown country which requires tough visas for anyone to enter. Not all of us will get the chance to visit it.” —Mehmet Murat Ildan

Apply for the interview slot within the available dates and as per your convenience. Pay the nonrefundable fee of $160, which is valid for a year. You lose the fee if the visa is rejected. However, you can apply again for the visa interview by paying the fee. It is essential to keep adequate funds in your bank account to sponsor the visit. Choose the Consulate office near your location. Ensure that your entire documentation is authentic and complies with their guidelines. There are no recommendations for the interview. The entire process is ethical, strict, fair, and transparent.

Visa Interview Checklist and Preparation

It's pretty physically unsettling, living life on a visa.” —John Oliver

Here is a list of documents to carry with you for the visa interview: Appointment letter, DS 160, original passport, your identity card or Aadhar card, or voter card. Invitation letter from your child, your child's letter to the Consulate, employment verification letter, H-1B visa if approved (It is not required if you are going to attend your child's convocation ceremony) ,xerox copy of the passport, and bank statement. You must carry your bank statement and income tax returns for the last three years. Show the relevant documents when asked.

Your interview is based on your child's track record in the USA and the documents you have uploaded. Therefore, upload the authentic information and read it before going for the interview. You must go to the Consulate one day before the day of the interview to give your fingerprints. Therefore, dress neatly and elegantly for both biometrics and interviews.

During the visa interview, you must respond to basic questions such as the location of your child, where he or she is working and living, the contact and salary details. You must be convinced that you will stay for a month and return to your home country. Inform me if you have any properties. It indicates that you return to your home country to take care of your assets. Prepare a list of probable interview questions with answers. Practice thoroughly with your friends or relatives.

Probable Interview Questions

Here is a list of probable interview questions for you to practice:

Q: Why are you going to the US?

Q: Have you been to the U.S. before?

Q: Do you have relatives in the US? If yes, who?

Q: Who is going to sponsor your visit?

Q: Where will you stay in the US?

Q: What does your son/daughter do for a living?

Q: How much does your son/daughter earn?

Q: Where does your son/daughter work?

Q: How long has your son/daughter been in the US?

Q: What visa did your son/daughter enter the U.S. on?

Q: When do you plan to travel?

Q: What are you going to do in the US?

Q: Have you been outside India before?

Q: What places do you want to visit?

Q: How long will you stay in the US?

Q: What is the guarantee that you will come back?

Q: When did your son/daughter last visit India?

Q: Where do you stay in India?

Q: What assets/property do you have in India?

Q: How many children do you have? And where are they? What do they do? Are they married?

Q: Show me your documents. OR Has your son/daughter sent any documents?

Visa Interview Tips

The best interviews—like the best biographies—should sing the strangeness and variety of the human race.” —Lynn Barber

Be available one hour before the interview. Your initial impression is critical to your success in the interview. Say 'Hi' to the consular officer/visa officer. Demonstrate a positive attitude. Be confident. Emphasize ethics and etiquette. Be truthful and respectful to the officer. Don't lie to the officer. Listen carefully. If you don't understand the question, request to repeat or paraphrase the question. Keep your answers to the visa officer short and precise. Don't avoid the answers. Avoid sharing unnecessary information voluntarily. Avoid arguing with the officer. Don't beat around the bush. Your answers must align with the uploaded information. Share your enthusiasm to return to your home country after the visit. The interview may last from one minute to ten minutes. If you are successful in the interview, you will be asked to hand over your passport to be stamped. You will be informed about the date to collect your passport personally. You can also give an authorization letter to collect it. There is a format for it, and you have to provide the details. If they want to seek any further clarification, they will send you an email. You must respond to them satisfactorily and visit the Consulate again to get your visa.

Conclusion

It has been said that a pretty face is a passport. But it's not, it's a visa, and it runs out fast.” —Julie Burchill

A part of your visa approval is based on your luck because the Consulate has a quota. Usually, a B1/B2 visa will be given for 10 years, and the exact details will be known after the visa stamping. To summarize, a visa interview for parents is easy if you know why you are going, where you are going, where you will be staying, and when you will be returning. So prepare thoroughly with your answers for these four basic questions to come out with flying colors. Good luck with your visa interview!

Access to knowledge is the superb, the supreme act of truly great civilizations. Of all the institutions that purport to do this, free libraries stand virtually alone in accomplishing this mission. No committee decides who may enter, no crisis of body or spirit must accompany the entrant. No tuition is charged, no oath is sworn, and no visa is demanded. Of the monuments humans build for themselves, very few say—touch me, use me, my hush is not indifference, my space is not a barrier. If I inspire awe, it is because I am in awe of you and the possibilities that dwell in you." —Toni Morrison
