Is Sonia Gandhi a Soft Leader and Indira Gandhi a Hard Leader?—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

Do you find it difficult to choose between two leaders Indira Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi? Do you find it tough to decide who is a better leader? Here is the response.


Both Indira Gandhi and Sonia are good leaders but their leadership styles are different. Indira Gandhi believed in a hard leadership style which is all about believing more in performance than in people while running her government. In contrast, Sonia Gandhi believed in soft leadership which is all about emphasizing more on the concern for people than on performance. Indira Gandhi believed in a transactional leadership style while Sonia Gandhi in a transformational style. Although Sonia appears soft externally she is a strong woman who makes hard decisions with more concern for people. Above all, the times that prevailed during Indira Gandhi forced her to act like a hard leader while the current times demand more of a soft approach to resolving various issues.



Sonia’s Soft Leadership


Sonia is a cool thinker. She is against corruption and quick in making decisions, especially against corrupt people, irrespective of party affiliations. She proved herself more as a soft leader while her mother-in-law, Indira Gandhi was a hard leader. Probably Sonia is a soft leader as she runs a coalition government that needs a lot of balancing acts.


Sonia entered politics reluctantly like her husband late Rajiv Gandhi. She stood like a rock when her husband was assassinated. She brought her two children through the right values and ethics. She did not get everything on a platter in politics. She entered the Congress party when it was disintegrated that too when the party was in opposition. She took the reins and rejuvenated the Congress party.


Sonia surprised her critics by bringing the Congress government back to the Centre through her soft and effective leadership skills and abilities. She flatly refused to become the Prime Minister of India when everything was easy for her. She surprised her critics and opponents by sacrificing power and installing a minority Sikh and a clean personality Dr. Manmohan Singh.


Sonia is a strong woman with great character who means business. She has become the symbol of women's leadership and a role model for Indian women. The future belongs to soft leaders like Sonia Gandhi.

If you want to build your leadership resume globally, you need to have a five-fold strategy. First, create new things in your domain as nobody appreciates the routine things. You need to go by the road less traveled. Secondly, communicate with the world through research papers and articles either by blogging and, or writing to magazines and journals. Thirdly, teach and train people in your area of interest. Fourthly, network with the experts in your area of interest, and fifthly, lead in your domain by interacting with others globally by participating in conferences, and seminars as a guest speaker.



Leadership Resume Tips


Follow the below tips for building your leadership resume.

  • Check your passionate areas.

  • Be clear about where you want to go and in which stream of leadership you are inclined to grow.

  • Follow an unconventional path.

  • Create a unique roadmap to reach your leadership position.

  • Always emphasize pretty ideas, not petty individuals.

  • Always look at the ball, not at the score. That means, how you play is more important than looking at the results.

  • Although continuous tooting your horn is not advisable, you need to do something to stay in the race to get noticed.

  • Keep doing and keep going.

He knew where he was strong and leveraged effectively and grew as a leadership legend globally. If a Film Producer Dies, Entire Film Industry Dies—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

 



 “Superstars come and go. I want to make sure I am always a producer's actor. I may be refused to be called a great actor but I have never troubled any of my producers in my life. Honesty always catches the camera, and that is what my strength is.” — Akshay Kumar


Usually, it is the heroes and heroines who earn a good name when a film is a hit. In rare cases, the villains and other artists get credit when the film is a hit. Presently, the directors of the films also earn a good name if the film does well at the box office. However, the producers rarely earn a good name, although they producers risk everything by pumping all their money into making films in India. In most cases, the producers suffer the most. They have to manage many things, including the egos of stars, directors, technicians, and other stakeholders who are directly and indirectly involved in the completion of a film.


It is the passion for films that inspires film producers to risk everything to produce films. But mostly they suffer in the end. Most film stars hardly care for their producers when their films bomb at the box office. However, there are a few actors who stand by their producers and handhold them if their films have failed at the box office. Such actors earn not only goodwill from their film producers but also ensure the longevity of their careers in the film industry.


Most people outside the film industry think that all producers have lots of money. It is not correct as most of them take loans from others. In some cases, they raise funds with a high rate of interest to release their films on time. If films are not released on time, the interest rate will be higher, and it is a big risk again to the film producers.


Therefore, the life of film producers is not a bed of roses as viewed by outsiders. It is a bed of thorns. As long as producers perform well, actors and technicians flock to them. The day the producers fail, these actors and technicians distance themselves from such producers.


Remember, actors like Rajnikant and Chiranjeevi survived in the film industry as they supported their producers when their films failed at the box office by signing their next films with those producers for lesser remuneration.


The message from this article is that actors must support producers who are passionate about making films, as passionate producers are very few presently. As the authors must support their publishers, the film stars must support their producers not only to ensure the film industry survives but also to ensure their careers survive and thrive. Remember, the actors and authors who let down their producers and publishers have gone to the abyss. Therefore, be accountable whether you are an actor or an author.

What is Information Overload?—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”


 

Nowadays too much information is dumped. People often find it tough to differentiate between chalk and cheese. At times irrelevant information takes precedence over the relevant information. In this regard, let briefly know what is all about information overload.


The term 'Information Overload' was coined by Alvin Toffler much before the internet revolution. It is about giving excess information that clutters the human mind and confuses people. It prevents people from understanding the real content. Sometimes it deviates from the main topic and area of interest. John C. Maxwell reveals in his book Success, "More new information has been produced in the last thirty years than in the previous five thousand. A single weekday edition of the New York Times contains more information than most people in seventeenth-century England were likely to encounter in their lifetimes."


Similarly while teaching, it is essential not to dump too much information as it becomes heavy for the listeners to digest the content. Knowledge has to be imparted in a piecemeal manner by giving breaks by way of humor, interaction, and questioning. It leads to effective teaching.

Tips to Tackle

It is essential to focus on what not to read. The process of elimination must start from your mind first. Declutter your mind by focusing on your main goals. Don't deviate from your main goals. Focus is the key to success in this information world. You must also aim to hit the bull's eye.

  • Learn to ignore irrelevant information.

  • Narrow down your focus on the key things.

  • A lot of crap is available in search engines. You must be choosy in your content.


To free your mind from clutter, Jim Collins mentions his book, Good to Great as follows:


Most of us lead busy, but undisciplined lives. We have ever-expanding “to do” lists, trying to build momentum by doing, doing, doing - and doing more. And it rarely works. Those who build the good-to-great companies, however, made as much use of “stop doing” lists as the “to do” lists. They displayed a remarkable amount of discipline to unplug all sorts of extraneous junk.”


Therefore, hereafter be careful in choosing the appropriate information as it saves your time, fine-tunes your mind, and polishes your personality.

Performance Management and Performance Appraisal—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

 


Performance management does not mean merely collecting and passing on information to higher authorities. It goes much beyond that. It involves checking the performance of the employees as per the benchmarked standards, and if there are any deviations, it bridges the gap. It improves the performance of the employees with a set of tools and techniques by aligning them with organizational goals and objectives.


It focuses on ways and means of enhancing employee performance. Its main objective is to enhance production and productivity. It checks for gaps between actual performance and desired performance.


There has to be an effective coordination amongst the human resources, top management, the immediate managers and the employees to ensure successful performance management.


In this cutthroat competitive world, it is essential to emphasize performance constantly where the employees are appropriately aligned with organizational goals. Ultimately it ensures organizational excellence and effectiveness.


We shall now look at another concept of performance appraisal which is directly linked with performance management.



Performance Appraisal


According to Flippo, "performance appraisal is the systematic, periodic and impartial rating of an employee's excellence in the matters about his present job and his potential for a better job."


A performance appraisal is the process of evaluation of performance of an employee by his or her supervisor. It indicates the worth of an employee and how far he or she is contributing towards the organization's goals and objectives against the expected standards. Precisely, performance appraisal is a feedback to an employee about his or her past performance.


The objectives of performance appraisal are to find out the strengths and weaknesses of an employee for further training needs. It helps in evaluating the rewards, promotions, and awards that an employee deserves. It also helps in correcting the performance vis-à-vis against the benchmarked standards and with other employees. It provides clarity in the roles and responsibilities of the employees.


Performance appraisal is not a new concept. It exists since time immemorial but in different names. However the concept acquired prominence in 20th century. The concept is here to stay in the years to come as it is considered one of the effectual means of evaluating employees.

Sun Tzu and Success—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

Every human being likes to be noticed. Everyone wants to be liked and appreciated by others. It all takes people to strive for success throughout their lives. It fires their enthusiasm. It forces them to follow uncharted paths. It compels them to go to any extent. However, very people realize their goals and achieve success while the majority fail and fall aside in the race towards success. In this regard, let us see success from the perspective of Sun Tzu, the Chinese philosopher and author who wrote the book The Art of War 2500 years ago.



According to Sun Tzu there are not more than five musical notes, yet the combination of these five give rise to more melodies than can ever be heard. There are not more than five primary colors, blue, yellow, red, white and black. There are not more than five cardinal tastes, sour, acrid, salt, sweet, bitter. Yet combinations of them yield more flavors than can ever be tasted. (Reference The Art of War Sun Tzu, Foreword by James Clavell)



Similarly, when you blend your inherent talents with various permutations and combinations you create more new talents. When you combine these talents with the skills that you acquire through reading, training, observation, learning and practice you can achieve your leadership success.


The five elements: water, fire, wood, metal, earth, are not always equally predominant; the four seasons make way for each other in turn. There are short days and long; the moon has its periods of wanting and waxing. Similarly, life is all full of peaks and valleys, ups and downs and success and failures. People must learn how to harness their energies for achieving all round success in their lives. They must learn to adjust their sail as per the changing wind and move forward towards the destination of success.



Success doesn’t come easily. It comes at a cost. It requires lot of struggles and sacrifices. It requires lot of passion, perseverance and patience. It takes lot of energies and efforts. At times people end up as unsung heroes. However, we must constantly and continuously strive for success by hoping light at the end of the tunnel.
