How to Manage People During Failures—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

“It's fine to celebrate success but it is more important to heed the lessons of failure.” Bill Gates

When things are going well, anyone can lead successfully. When the ship is sailing smoothly, any captain can sail it successfully. However, when faced with a storm, the real captains come to the fore and steer the ship successfully to the shore.

Some leaders proved their leadership abilities when things were going well. However, they failed miserably when things went awry thus hitting rock bottom. When we look at leaders like Abraham Lincoln, he was an amazing example of taking the leadership baton when America was passing through a major crisis of North vs. South and sailing smoothly by demonstrating extraordinary leadership qualities and maintaining the unity of America. He also managed slavery and played a crucial role in the abolition of slavery.

When political leaders remain in opposition it is tough to maintain their flock together as the ruling party attracts the key people from opposition to break the ranks and join the ruling political parties. Political leaders need to demonstrate their true leadership skills and constantly motivate their cadre to stay disciplined. They must raise hope among their party people for staging back to power. Of course, it is easier said than done to retain the flock intact especially when the political parties are in opposition.

There will be a section of people who will also demotivate the people when the political party is in opposition. Besides, problems come in battalions during failures. The leaders must spot such people and show the door as they spoil the rest of the people. They must continuously motivate themselves as well as their flock during failures to ensure victory. Tough times are great times to learn lessons for leaders and to bring out the best among them. Hence, leaders must be careful during failures to charge themselves constantly and also their followers to achieve success finally.

Managing Success is More Challenging Than Managing Failures—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

"Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed." Booker T. Washington

Managing success is more challenging than managing failures. It sounds strange, right? Yes, when you achieve success more people flock around you to congratulate you and to share your success. And you find it tough to manage them. At the same time, you will have more challenges as there will be people who are envious of your success and criticize you by highlighting your negative past or sometimes criticize your means and methods of reaching the top.

It is tough to know who are your real friends, especially after achieving success. When you fail you can easily assess your friends who stand by you. It is true that prosperity brings friends while adversity tests them.

After achieving success, if you don’t pay attention to others due to your busy schedules you will be misunderstood that success has gone to your head. If you closely associate with everybody few people may take undue advantage of your closeness. They may send wrong signals to others. Sometimes people try to attack you so that they get noticed easily by others. These days, several small people with little egos began attacking the big leaders with shoes. Sometimes they slap the top people in public to get instant publicity. Therefore, successful people have to be more careful in protecting their image and managing their success. They know how hard to achieve success and they must also learn that maintaining success and retaining fame is still harder.

Hence, understand the intricacies involved in achieving success. Learn to manage your success well through proper time management. And above all, have the humility to grow still taller in stature. Accept the reality that it is easy to manage failures but tough to manage your success.

Humans and their Quest Beyond Bread and Bed—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

“People are more frightened of being lonely than of being hungry, or being deprived of sleep, or of having their sexual needs unfulfilled" —Frieda Fromm Reichman

It is rightly said that man cannot live by bread alone. His quest goes beyond bread and bed to betterment. The noted American psychologist, Abraham Maslow outlined the Hierarchy of Needs that motivates man to move from one level to the next higher level after accomplishment in each level. According to Maslow, man searches for physiological needs such as food, clothing, shelter, and sex. In other words, man searches for bread and upon fulfillment of bread he looks for bed to fulfill his biological needs. The next level is safety needs where he likes to protect himself from death and wants to stay away from insecurities and apprehensions. When you observe any living thing it struggles for its survival and existence and this is quite natural among human beings as well. After fulfilling this need man enters into a third hierarchy of needs - social needs. Aristotle once said that man is a social animal and he cannot live alone. Hence, man likes to associate with his kin and kin to share his feelings, emotions, and ideas within his communities and feels happy to be with his groups and communities. After fulfilling this need, man enters into the fourth level of needs - self-esteem needs where he wants his ego to be protected and respected. For every man, the ego is very precious and close to him. He doesn't appreciate if his ego is hurt. If his ego is hurt he may go to any extent to settle the scores. When we view employees leaving their organizations and joining elsewhere, it is basically because when their egos are hurt by their bosses or others or if they find it is not worthwhile working any longer, they resign. After accomplishment of this need man goes to the highest of the hierarchy of needs - self-actualization needs. People love to accept challenging roles and responsibilities and pursue their passions close to their hearts. Man gets total accomplishment only when he enjoys all these five levels one after another hierarchically. Succinctly, after fulfillment of all these needs, the man becomes a complete man.

You must know these five levels and proceed accordingly to unlock your potential, creativity, and genius to become a complete man. To conclude, man likes to be cared for, loved, talked, respected, and honored. Recognizing and appreciating his needs helps make a difference in the lives of others.

Have an Attitude of Gratitude—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

“We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if mankind is to survive." —Albert Einstein.

Man is responsible for most of the problems. He often blames God for all his problems for which he alone is responsible. Most of the issues for men are due to their rotten attitude. When a man attacks others negatively with a rotten attitude he invites problems for himself. Sometimes he develops envy and breaks relations with others. Ultimately he blames God. Man makes mistakes and makes God as a scapegoat for most of the time. As long as man has pleasures, he forgets God and the moment pressures start he recalls God and holds Him accountable for all his problems. Man must have an attitude of gratitude towards others and God.

In addition, most of the time man reacts to the problems rather than acting to the problems. Man blames individuals for all issues without looking at ideas for resolving them. Man often wants to have an easy-going success and compromises several things and, finally, blames God for the consequences. Hence, man must learn to act rather than react.

90:10 Principle

When one of my students wanted to share with me about the 90:10 principle, I requested him to share in the presence of other students so that the students also benefited from his knowledge. He said that 90 percent of the problems can be solved by acting rather than reacting to the situation and 10 percent of the problems were beyond human control. Therefore, we should not bother much about 10 percent of the problems that arise out of external forces and factors whereas we need to take a quick look at 90 percent of the problems that can be tackled easily with a proactive attitude and approach. Treat every problem as a prospect and treat every lesson as a path towards success.

To conclude, have a positive, right, and strong attitude learn to act rather than react to the situations, and finally, have an attitude of gratitude towards God.
