Performance Management and Performance Appraisal—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

Performance management does not mean merely collecting and passing on information to higher authorities. It goes much beyond that. It involves checking the performance of the employees as per the benchmarked standards, and if there are any deviations, it bridges the gap. It improves the performance of the employees with a set of tools and techniques by aligning them with organizational goals and objectives.

It focuses on ways and means of enhancing employee performance. Its main objective is to enhance production and productivity. It checks for gaps between actual performance and desired performance.

There has to be an effective coordination amongst the human resources, top management, the immediate managers and the employees to ensure successful performance management.

In this cutthroat competitive world, it is essential to emphasize performance constantly where the employees are appropriately aligned with organizational goals. Ultimately it ensures organizational excellence and effectiveness.

We shall now look at another concept of performance appraisal which is directly linked with performance management.

Performance Appraisal

According to Flippo, "performance appraisal is the systematic, periodic and impartial rating of an employee's excellence in the matters about his present job and his potential for a better job."

A performance appraisal is the process of evaluation of performance of an employee by his or her supervisor. It indicates the worth of an employee and how far he or she is contributing towards the organization's goals and objectives against the expected standards. Precisely, performance appraisal is a feedback to an employee about his or her past performance.

The objectives of performance appraisal are to find out the strengths and weaknesses of an employee for further training needs. It helps in evaluating the rewards, promotions, and awards that an employee deserves. It also helps in correcting the performance vis-à-vis against the benchmarked standards and with other employees. It provides clarity in the roles and responsibilities of the employees.

Performance appraisal is not a new concept. It exists since time immemorial but in different names. However the concept acquired prominence in 20th century. The concept is here to stay in the years to come as it is considered one of the effectual means of evaluating employees.

Sun Tzu and Success—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star... you will still be beaten by people who spent their time working hard, and learning things and weren’t so lazy.” - Terry Prattchet

Every human being likes to be noticed. Everyone wants to be liked and appreciated by others. It all takes people to strive for success throughout their lives. It fires their enthusiasm. It forces them to follow uncharted paths. It compels them to go to any extent. However, very people realize their goals and achieve success while the majority fail and fall aside in the race towards success. In this regard, let us see success from the perspective of Sun Tzu, the Chinese philosopher and author who wrote the book The Art of War 2500 years ago.

According to Sun Tzu there are not more than five musical notes, yet the combination of these five give rise to more melodies than can ever be heard. There are not more than five primary colors, blue, yellow, red, white and black. There are not more than five cardinal tastes, sour, acrid, salt, sweet, bitter. Yet combinations of them yield more flavors than can ever be tasted. (Reference The Art of War Sun Tzu, Foreword by James Clavell)

Similarly, when you blend your inherent talents with various permutations and combinations you create more new talents. When you combine these talents with the skills that you acquire through reading, training, observation, learning and practice you can achieve your leadership success.

The five elements: water, fire, wood, metal, earth, are not always equally predominant; the four seasons make way for each other in turn. There are short days and long; the moon has its periods of wanting and waxing. Similarly, life is all full of peaks and valleys, ups and downs and success and failures. People must learn how to harness their energies for achieving all round success in their lives. They must learn to adjust their sail as per the changing wind and move forward towards the destination of success.

Success doesn’t come easily. It comes at a cost. It requires lot of struggles and sacrifices. It requires lot of passion, perseverance and patience. It takes lot of energies and efforts. At times people end up as unsung heroes. However, we must constantly and continuously strive for success by hoping light at the end of the tunnel.

Industrial Relations—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

Industrial relations are the interrelation between employees, employers, and the government. There are several advantages of having better industrial relations between employees and employers. For instance, it promotes better working relations and industrial climate, resulting in better productivity and performance at the workplace. There are other advantages such as industrial peace, prosperity, and democracy, leading to organizational effectiveness and excellence.

Objectives of Industrial Relations

Industrial relations objectives include curbing absenteeism and employee turnover, avoiding industrial conflicts and strikes to prevent government intervention, and promoting workers' participation in management.

Causes for Poor Industrial Relations

Improper organizational culture and climate are the major reasons for poor industrial relations between employers and employees. Inadequate compensation, both monetary and non-monetary, is another cause of strained industrial relations. Uninteresting and monotonous work may lead to unhealthy industrial relations.

Promoting Better Industrial Relations

It is essential to build trust and confidence among the stakeholders to ensure healthy industrial relations. There is a need to encourage democratic trade unions so that these can check if there are any imbalances or irregularities. Besides, the trade unions must be willing to resort to voluntary arbitration with a spirit of collective bargaining and to maintain industrial peace at all times.

Public Speaking Techniques—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

Public speaking is an art, craft, and skill. If people want to hone public speaking skills they must have passion to learn the ropes. Here are a few nuggets you can learn to connect with your audience quickly and for effective presentation.

  • Use humor as an ice-breaking tool to connect with your audience. Humor breaks the tense situation and helps connect with the audience quickly. But avoid using excessive humor as it compromises with the content and you will be labeled as an entertainer rather than a professional speaker.

  • You can rhyme words as they sound like music to your audience and help them retain the important information for a longer time.

  • You can also tell tales as tales connect with audiences quickly. People are excited to listen to stories. Besides, tales help connect the reel content with real experiences.

  • Research reveals that one out of seven messages gets across to the audience in any communication and the rest fall flat. Hence, the speakers must use visuals while speaking with the audience as people remember visuals more. If possible, you can also interact with your audience if it happens to be small to ensure effective takeaways.

  • Research also shows that audiences often lose touch with speakers when it exceeds seven minutes. Hence, it is essential to gauge the body language of the audience periodically during a presentation to change styles accordingly. If speakers find that audiences are losing interest then they must share anecdotes or short stories related to the topic.

Hence, when you go for public speaking next time, keep these techniques in mind apart from doing a lot of preliminary research about the topic well in advance.

Dear Good Leaders! Hire A Great Coach and Become Great Leaders—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

Coaches are the ladders for leaders. They know how to place the ladders on the right side of the wall. Leaders have vision, and the coaches fine-tune their vision with a practical touch. Coaches align the energies and efforts of busy leaders through their passion, wisdom, and experience. Coaches are aware that what worked for these leaders to reach the present position won't work in the future to scale further corporate heights. And it is their job to enlighten and educate the leaders to reach further higher positions through their coaching and direction. Coaches help leaders realize their hidden potential. They help leaders reach their maximum capabilities.

There is a thin line that separates the senior leaders from leaders and CEOs from non-CEOs, and it is the coaches who know that thin line and make sure that the good leaders deliver effectively to become great leaders. That thin line is nothing but a different mindset that is needed to reach further higher positions. Precisely, coaches help good leaders become great leaders. Although most of the leaders are aware of this thin line, they may not be able to focus to cross over due to their busy schedules and pressures. It is the coaches who would handhold good leaders become great leaders. It is the coaches who uncover the hidden potential of the leaders to become great leaders. It is the coaches who allay hidden phobias and apprehensions of leaders. It is the coaches who make everything possible, as they are cut out for such roles and responsibilities.

Hence, dear good leaders! Don’t waste your precious time by brooding over too much. Take time out of your busy schedules and ruminate for a while. Hire a great coach and excel as great leaders, as what got you here won’t get you there without a great coach.

Collective Bargaining—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

"As negotiations about working conditions and terms of employment between an employer, or a group of employers, or one or more employers' organizations, on the one hand, and one or more representative workers' organizations on the other, to reach an agreement." - I.L.O

Collective bargaining is all about the bargaining between the employers and employees to set right the problems they have. It contains issues related to wages, salaries, health, safety, welfare, and other affairs. It differs from country to country, but collective bargaining is the negotiation between employers and employees about the roles and responsibilities, rights and duties, pay and perks, health and safety, etc..

Perlman aptly stated, “Collective bargaining is not just a means of raising wages and improving conditions of employment. Nor is it merely democratic government in industry. It is above all technique, collective bargaining as a technique of the rise of a new class is quite different ...... from the desire to displace or abolish" the "old ruling class"... ... to gain equal rights as a class ... ... to acquire an excessive jurisdiction in that sphere where the most immediate interests, both material and spiritual, are determined, and a shared jurisdiction with the older class or classes in all other spheres.”

Collective bargaining as a concept gained momentum in the late nineteenth century as employees began demanding more rights. Collective bargaining is good for both the employees and employers, where employees assert their rights through unionization and the employers get to know the pulse of the people and mold themselves to ensure peace and harmony at the workplace for better productivity and performance.

Objectives

The fundamental objective of collective bargaining is to improve the conditions of employees. It ensures peace and harmony between employers and employees. It creates cordial and amicable relations, thus avoiding any governmental intervention. Finally, it provides industrial peace, prosperity, and democracy.

Characteristics of Collective Bargaining

  • It is a flexible process that allows for give-and-take. At times, it also involves a 'carrot and stick' policy.

  • It takes place between the group of employees and employers.

  • Negotiations are an integral part of collective bargaining.

  • It is a complementary rather than a competitive process where the right contribution of employees leads to better pay and perks from employers.

  • If required, there is the involvement of professional troubleshooters and negotiators to resolve the issues amicably.

A Take-Home Message

Never fear to negotiate and never negotiate out of fear." – John F.Kennedy.

Collective bargaining involves several steps, such as preparing for negotiations, identifying the bargaining process, negotiating, arriving at a mutually beneficial agreement, approving, and finally administering the agreement.

Collective bargaining is essential to protect the rights and duties of employees to avoid any kind of exploitation. The concept of collective bargaining remains the same at the core level, although it varies at the surface level from country to country. It must be made a win-win for both employees and employers to ensure organizational excellence and effectiveness.

Message to Millennials: Do the Right Thing, Always Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

“Do the right thing. It will gratify some people and astonish the rest.” —Mark Twain

People are often caught between doing the best thing and doing the right thing. Some people think of doing the best thing in the prevailing situation whereas some people think of doing the right thing in any situation irrespective of the effects and outcomes. I believe that doing the right thing is always better than doing the best thing in life and leadership. In this regard, we will discuss and differentiate between them.

Doing the right thing rather than the best thing is easier said done because the path is riddled with several challenges inviting controversies temporarily. The fact is that truth alone triumphs at the end. Hence, doing the right thing pays at the end. It helps you lead your life ethically and mindfully. You live like a legend permanently.

When you insist on doing the best thing, you may be compelled to cut corners to achieve your ends, whereas when you insist on doing the right thing, you don’t have to cut corners. However, you will have to struggle and suffer during the journey. Some people achieve success at any cost due to peer pressure and cut-throat competition. People are smart and wise enough to identify such people and separate them from ethical leaders. Some people achieve success late in their lives through the right means by ignoring peer pressure and cut-throat competition. In a nutshell, they achieve success with integrity. Such people live beyond their lifetime and will be remembered forever in history.

Always do the right thing at the right time to get the right results. You must have the wisdom to identify the right time and timing to achieve the right outcomes. When you do the right thing, you are satisfied with your life, and you sleep peacefully and happily. You won’t have any regrets on your deathbed. Remember that treachery wins first, and the truth wins in the end. When you want the truth to win, you must always do the right thing and the best thing in your life.

When your intentions are positive and your actions are ethical, you will be able to do the right things in life. Ensure that there is consistency between your intentions and actions while doing the right things to get the right results.

A Take-Home Message

With integrity, you have nothing to fear, since you have nothing to hide. With integrity, you will do the right thing, so you will have no guilt.” —Zig Ziglar

Do the right thing rather than the best thing. If you can do both the right thing and the best thing, it is right. Otherwise, always do the right thing to lead your life with purpose and meaning.

We humans can control our actions, not the outcomes. Therefore, we must do what is the right thing to do in the given circumstances, irrespective of the outcomes. Life is short. We must make it peaceful and pleasant for us and others.

The supreme quality for leadership is integrity.” —Dwight D. Eisenhower
