Netflix Knightfall Takeaways

“During the dark times, great leaders lead their people back to the light.” ―Professor M.S. Rao

I enjoyed watching Knightfall on Netflix in December 2020 as I am passionate about history, military, and strategy. It may be because I served in the Indian Air Force.  Here are some messages, ideas, and insights from this TV series. Every man has two sides—the man who wants to be, and the man who really is. Wicked men always see wickedness in others. The more you doubt it, the more marvelous the miracle. Don’t let fear rule you. God often tests your faith. Keep the faith. Use God’s strength to quiet your mind. God relieves the suffering only when He wants. Never share your secrets with others. Ask yourself whether you fight for money or honor. A true leader becomes a ladder for others. You cannot undo your past. You can only learn from it. A true leader fights shoulder to should with his men. The king has to strategize from a proper distance to observe the whole battlefield. You can overcome any challenge if you are a great strategist. Don’t carry emotional baggage because it ruins your present happiness.

Takeaways

“Death is never your choice to make. Only God decides whether we live or die.” —Talus

Knightfall is full of tricks, treachery, master games, bribes, lust for power, manipulations, illicit relations, lack of ethics, and etiquette. It unveils that rulers were not happy despite holding on to power. It teaches you team spirit, camaraderie, fraternity, loyalty, fraternity, loyalty, humility, and strategy. It also teaches you to fight for honor.

“For a man of Faith, death is not the end. It’s just a passing.” —Godfrey, Knightfall

How to Write Your Autobiography

"My best teacher is not a person. My best teacher is my books, my experience, my observation, my failures, and my students. They are all my best teachers. In a nutshell, my best teachers are not persons but books, experience, observation, environment, and students who provoked my thinking and encouraged me to research and improve my teaching." ―Professor M.S. Rao

Most celebrities want to write their life story either as a memoir or as an autobiography but they are scared of writing due to various reasons. Some are worried that their weaknesses or failures will be exposed. Some are worried that they lose their credibility. Some are concerned about the complicated process of writing. In this blog post, I will differentiate between a memoir and an autobiography and discuss the importance and the process of writing your memoir or autobiography.

When you write a book, you build your credibility instantly, and become an international authority and expert in your area and industry. You will be highly respected and become an international celebrity. When you write a great book, readers don't care about the price to purchase your book because they basically care for the subject.

Memoir versus Autobiography

A memoir is a book of memories. It is a work of literary non-fiction. It is much bigger than your diary and journal. There is a difference between memoir and autobiography. A memoir is an account of your life for a specific period whereas an autobiography is an account of chronological events in your life. A memoir is a subset of autobiography. Some celebrities write in different parts while some write their entire autobiography. Barack Obama wrote his memoir, 'A Promised Land' whereas Mahatma Gandhi wrote his autobiography, 'The Story Of My Experiments With Truth.'

A memoir doesn't cover everything about life. It covers some memories with a focus on one seminal event. For instance, my childhood becomes a memoir, my service in the Indian Air Force becomes a memoir, my entrepreneurship becomes a memoir, my teaching career becomes a memoir, and my writing career becomes a memoir. When I combine all these things, it can become my autobiography. Autobiographies are a collection of multiple memoirs and multiple themes.

Steps to Write Your Memoir or Autobiography

Plan well, research thoroughly, invest a few hours every day or once a week to write your memoir or autobiography. Stay focused. Be disciplined. Identify whether you are an early bird or a night owl and leverage accordingly to unlock your creativity. Here are some tools to write your memoir. Share only a few emotional moments. Outline inflection points in your life to enable the readers to take away valuable lessons from your life. Take liberty to go flashback instead of writing it chronologically.

Reading several memoirs and autobiographies helps you understand the pattern and process of writing. You can customize your writing accordingly. You must be brave-hearted to write your memoir or autobiography. You must be thick-skinned to share your failures and weaknesses especially your personal life. Writing a memoir or an autobiography is like putting your entire life in the hands of your readers to read, judge, and comment. Therefore, it requires guts to share your personal life through your memoir or autobiography.

Who Is Your Best Teacher?

“I am not blessed with regular education and a great education. I am not blessed with great parents. I am not blessed with any mentors, coaches, or teachers. In spite of these constraints, I am trying to leave my mark in the world.” ―Professor M.S. Rao

Q: Who is your best teacher?

A: My best teacher is not a person. My best teacher is my books, my experience, my observation, my failures, and my students. They are all my best teachers. In a nutshell, my best teachers are not persons but books, experience, observation, environment, and students who provoked my thinking and encouraged me to research and improve my teaching.

“If someone asks me a question, ‘What is it you see when you look out the window that is visible but not yet seen by others’ I will answer, ‘I see a world filled with people with a huge potential lying untapped. If I can identify their strengths and inspire them to unlock their potential, I feel that I have made a difference in the world.’” —Professor M.S. Rao

The Challenge of Learning: The Future of Education

“One person, one passion, one dream, and one vision can change the future of education in the world.” ―Professor M.S. Rao

I participated in Nobel Week Dialogue 2020 on the topic titled, ‘The Challenge of Learning: The Future of Education’ because I am passionate about education, teaching, students, and sharing my knowledge freely with the world. I have authored a couple of books on education, teaching, training, and students. The Nobel Week Dialogue was exciting with valuable takeaways. Here are some takeaways from this dialogue.

Education is a lifelong process. It is a great amplifier and accelerator. It must help us learn to live sustainably. It must create curiosity and open the minds of students. It must ignite the minds of the students and help them convert information into knowledge. Educators must become great accelerators and facilitators. They must create curiosity in students and provide a conducive environment for students to learn.

Rao

How to Write a Book

How to Write a Book

"Writing a book is an adventure to begin with, it is a toy and an amusement, then it becomes a mistress, and then it becomes a master, and then a tyrant. The last phase is that just as you are about to be reconciled to your servitude, you kill the monster, and fling him out to the public." ―Winston Churchill

Some people want to write a book but they are scared of writing and publishing it. Writing a book is always a challenge for beginners and experienced writers. In this post, I will discuss how to write and publish your book successfully.

I have written more than 60 books and published more than 50 books within a decade. It requires passion and vision. It requires discipline and dedication. It requires execution and excellence. Here are some tips to write your book.

Find out whether you are passionate about writing a book or it. If you are passionate, be clear about the area you want to write about. Research on that area to identify the gaps. After finding the gaps, check whether you will be able to fill those gaps and pull it off. For instance, some writers start a book and leave it in the middle as they find it challenging to proceed further due to a lack of adequate interest and content. It happens for most writers. When I became an author in 2010, I started writing a book on charismatic leadership. But I could not complete it as I did not get adequate material to research and write. Additionally, the topic did not create adequate curiosity in me. So, I stopped writing the book and included the written content in another relevant book.

After you decided to write your book, create tentative chapters to write. Precisely, create a blueprint to proceed with chapter titles. Take up each chapter, research, and write the chapter. Don't attempt to write too many chapters at a time. Take one chapter, write it completely, and move to the next chapter. During the process of writing, more ideas flash on your mind to include new chapters in the book. Maintain a separate document for writing your ideas. Complete all chapters. Finally integrate all chapters chronologically to complete your book. Remember to be an author first and an editor next. Creating ideas and writing a chapter is more important. Editing can be done later. Edit all chapters and reshuffle your chapters to ensure the right sequence.

Edit and improve your book multiple times to get the best finished product. Check the authenticity of the data you outlined. Create sample chapters from the book and approach eminent people in the area to write endorsements and a foreword. After giving a gap for a few days, edit and improve your book again. In this way, you will be able to write your book. Remember, writing a book is easier said than done. It is a painful process with lots of distractions and disturbances. You must stay clearly focused on your goal.

Approach the publishers who can publish your book. Don't worry if your book proposal is rejected. Every author has several rejections including JK Rowling. Be an optimist and send your book proposal until you get the best and ideal publisher who can publish it. Edit it finally and submit your soft copy of the entire manuscript to the publisher. You will be asked to change or modify the content. Follow the suggestions of the publisher. You will find happiness when your book sees the light of the day. You forget the entire painful process when you see your book in print. It is like a mother seeing her baby for the first time with a smile.

To summarize, be passionate, create a tentative blueprint of chapters, write each chapter, be flexible to modify your chapters and content, edit your book several times, approach the right publisher, and publish your book. Wishing you good luck with your book writing!

Write Your Life Story

Write the Story of Your Life

"If someone asks me a question, 'What is it you see when you look out the window that is visible but not yet seen by others' I will answer, 'I see a world filled with people with a huge potential lying untapped. If I can identify their strengths and inspire them to unlock their potential, I feel that I have made a difference in the world.'" —Professor M.S. Rao

Throughout my life, I believed in two things―continuous learning and constant feedback. Having reached 57 years, I decided to take feedback about my life. I wanted to share it with storytelling. It gives me a sense of satisfaction that I led my life with purpose and meaning and provided a ray of hope and inspiration to the next generations. It helps me leave my legacy to the future generations that I contributed my best despite financial constraints and family challenges and despite hailing from humble origins with toxic family background.

Examining my Life

I have made several mistakes in my life leading to many challenges in life. I was working hard but I was overconfident that my hard work would lead to success. I did not realize that distractions and disturbances from the external environment would ruin my prospects of achieving success. I made the mistake of believing people blindly. I was cheated by others several times since I trusted them blindly. Later, I realized that I must be careful in judging the people. I made the mistake of trusting my family members that they would support me when I failed in business. Unfortunately, they backed out when I failed in business. They thought that I would become a liability for them. I never expected that my siblings would betray me and snatch away the little share of property that I was supposed to get my parents. Fortunately, my friends from the Indian Air Force helped me overcome my challenges. I was blessed to join the Indian Air Force where I got friends with a positive attitude.

Life taught me several lessons. I planned many things but destiny took me to totally different paths. As a result, I led a life with diversified experiences including military, business, teaching, training, consultancy, and writing background. I learned that life is never a straight line. I still struggle with financial challenges because I never cared for money. I cared for sharing my knowledge freely with the world. I cared for grooming one million students as global leaders by 2030. It landed me in several financial challenges. My continues writing led me to severe back pain. I overcame it through physiotherapy exercises and discipline.

To conclude, examine your life, share your strengths and weaknesses, unveil your failures and successes with integrity to enable your next generations to learn lessons from your life to evolve as better citizens and excel as better leaders. Life is great.

"The good leaders do the best thing in the prevailing situation whereas the great leaders do the right thing in any situation irrespective of the effects and outcomes." ―Professor M.S. Rao

How Do Leaders Drive Responsible Industry Transformation?

"In today's era of volatility, there is no other way but to re-invent. The only sustainable advantage you can have over others is agility, that's it. Because nothing else is sustainable, everything else you create, somebody else will replicate." ―Jeff Bezo, CEO and President, Amazon

Transformation means different things to different individuals, industries, and organizations. Leaders must dream and think big to drive industry transformation effectively especially in the post-coronavirus world. Additionally, exponential thinking is essential for leaders to lead in today's exponentially disrupted business environment. Transformation involves strategic thinking, strategic decisions, and above all, reinventing as per the changing times and technologies.

Driving a responsible industry transformation involves the usage of innovative business models and digital tools and technologies to improve the products and services to add value to customers and clients. It helps adapt organizations in a rapidly changing world and improving the organizational bottom lines. In a nutshell, it adds value for customers, engages employees effectively, and increases profits for shareholders.

Leaders must impart training programs to their employees regularly to upgrade skills, knowledge, and abilities to drive organizational transformation effectively. They must prepare their organizations for disruption and innovate constantly and embrace change effectively. They must accept volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA).

"At least 40% of all businesses will die in the next 10 years… If they don't figure out how to change their entire company to accommodate new technologies."  — John Chambers, Cisco System
