Life Lessons from Film ‘Mahanati’/‘Nadaigaiyar Thilagam’―Share if You Care

“If life were predictable it would cease to be life and be without flavor.” —Eleanor Roosevelt

When I was authoring a book on women leadership, my wife asked me to view the film ‘Mahanati’. I had lots of assignments and commitments globally. But I decided to spend some time with my wife. Additionally, I enjoy viewing old movies and I admire Savitri.

Mahanati is based on the life of legendary actress Savitri. She was a legend with an amazing influence in both Tollywood and Kollywood. The reviews for the film are also good. When I viewed the film, I became emotional because of her tragic end.

I know about life since I had my own share of downfalls and setbacks having been cheated by my own relatives apart from having knowledge about life from real life and books. Life teaches many lessons which books don’t. But observing others and learning lessons is always better than learning lessons from personal experiences because a wise person learns lessons from others’ mistakes while a foolish person learns from own mistakes. At the end of the day, everyone makes mistakes and becomes a fool. But how you learn lessons and apply them to avoid further mistakes is more important.

Life Lessons to Learn

“All of life is peaks and valleys. Don’t let the peaks get too high and the valleys too low.” —John Wooden

I have the practice of jotting down the main ideas whenever I view films and share them through my blogs and books. Here are some life lessons everyone must learn to avoid mistakes to lead a happy life.
  1. Life is not a cakewalk. It is full of peaks and valleys.
  2. Don’t take success for granted. Ensure that success doesn’t go to your head. Be level headed.
  3. Save money for a rainy day. Keep financial reserves ready.
  4. Don’t trust others blindly. Avoid sycophants.
  5. Stick to your core areas rather than enter into unknown areas and burning your fingers.
  6. Don’t make emotional decisions. Be analytical and logical when you make your decisions. Use your head, heart and gut to make your decisions wisely.
  7. Success brings many fake friends while failures bring a few true friends.
  8. Handling success is easy while handling failures is more challenging.
  9. Bounce back from failures instead of brooding over them.
  10. Hire a coach or mentor to overcome your challenges and seek professional advice.
  11. Be a giver, not a taker.

Conclusion

“You’re only here for a short visit. Don’t hurry, don’t worry. And be sure to smell the flowers along the way.” —Walter Hagen

Learn lessons from others and from your own experiences. Move forward in life without brooding over your unpleasant experiences and events. Life is short and make it sweet. Humans propose while God disposes. To conclude, life is not a cakewalk. Enjoy every moment of your life without any regrets. Life is great!

“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” —Maya Angelou

When I Was 15 Years Old I Dreamt Big ―Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D. International Leadership Guru― Share if You Care

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” ―John Quincy Adams

As every adolescent has dreams, I had my own dreams in my adolescent stage. My dream was to join Indian Air Force (IAF) to serve my nation. But I was short in height and underweight as a child. Unfortunately, I had asthma also. I ran daily and exercised regularly to accomplish my dream to join IAF. I improved my height and joined Indian Air Force. It was a great feeling to join IAF and an exciting experience to serve in IAF. I joined as a boy and became a man and came out as a leader. When I joined IAF I was undergraduate. After I joined I studied hard in the night and during my annual leave and acquired qualifications including DME, BSc, MA, MBA, PGDCLL and PGDBM. I am grateful to IAF for converting me from a boy into a leader. And It is a great honor to serve one’s own country. Jai Hind!

Free Chapter ― Professor M.S. Rao’s Upcoming Book “Spiritual Leadership: Stop Existing and Start Living”

Dear friends,

I am excited to share with you that I authored a book on spiritual leadership and life leadership. It is tentatively titled, “Spiritual Leadership: Stop Existing and Start Living.” Here are the details about the book with a free chapter. I would appreciate if you could share your thoughts about this book on social media channels including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+.

About The Book
“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” ―Howard Thurman

This book unveils the secrets to unlock the power of mindfulness to excel as a mindful leader. It helps you to stop existing and start living by identifying what makes you come alive. It offers spiritual strokes to lead a happy and meaningful life. It outlines tools and techniques to conquer the fear of unknown and overcome emotional baggage. It explains rewiring your brain to be positive and resolving the conflicts amicably. It unfolds that everything happens for a reason and implores you to work for a cause, not applause. It enlightens that life is a train, not a station. It concludes to live your life on your own terms to provide meaning to your life.

This book is a short course on spiritual leadership. You can easily toss the book into a briefcase or purse and read here and there as time allows. It is a quick reference guide for all spiritual seekers, masters, healers, learners and leaders.

Introduction―Identify What Makes You Come Alive

“There is no greater gift you can give or receive than to honor your calling. It is why you were born and how you become most truly alive.” — Oprah Winfrey

People are born and dead everyday but we remember only a few leaders including Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr, Mother Teresa, and Nelson Mandela. What made them stand out from others? What made them live beyond their lifetime? It is because they identified what made them come alive to provide meaning to their lives.  They made an immense difference to the world without expecting anything from others. We will discuss what makes people come alive to provide meaning to your life.

Existing versus Living

There is a thin line separating existing and living in this world. When you lead a scheduled life, you exist in this world like anybody else. In contrast, when you lead an adventurous life by exploring and experimenting, you live in the world unlike others. When you exist, you spend your time whereas when you live, you invest your time. When you exist, you emphasize status quo whereas when you live, you emphasize status quo ante.  When you exist, you lead conventional life whereas when you live, you lead an unconventional life with highs and lows.  When you exist, you live in your comfort zone whereas when you live, you live in your effective zone. When you exist, you don’t exploit your full potential whereas when you live, you exploit your full potential. When you exist, you make limited mistakes, learn limitedly and remain as an ordinary person whereas when you live you make more mistakes, learn greatly and excel as an extraordinary person and leader.

Tips to Come Alive

To come alive, you must follow your passions. You are gifted with only one life. When you follow your passions, you don’t know how you spend your time because you enjoy doing every moment of your life. Hence, follow your heart, identify your core talents and build skills around them.  Here are some tools and techniques to come alive to provide meaning to your life.
  • Avoid toxic people and friends. Surround with people who spread positivity, happiness and joy.
  • Avoid badmouthing others. See good in others and appreciate them to elevate their energy levels.
  • Let go off your unpleasant. Learn to live in the present instead of brooding over your unpleasant past and worrying about future which cannot be predicted.
  • Forgive the people who let you down. Be compassionate.
  • Have the attitude of gratitude. Thank God for what you have. Avoid complaining, criticizing and condemning.
  • Help people. It gives you immense happiness and joy.
  • Travel different places to interact with different people and understand them. Additionally, you enjoy nature and unwind yourself. You may acquire new ideas to explore and experiment. Paulo Coelho authored the book ‘The Alchemist’ based on his experiences while traveling.
  • Build your network of friends to share your emotions and feelings and to listen to them and respect theirs. It gives you great comfort and solace.
  • Avoid complexity. Make things simple and straight. Steve Maraboli remarked, “Free yourself from the complexities of your life! A life of simplicity and happiness awaits you.”

Mentor to Make a Difference

Serving students and sharing knowledge free with the world makes me come alive. I enjoy doing it in spite of not earning any money from it because I am making a difference to the world. Similarly, find out what makes you come alive in this world to provide meaning to your life.

Identify the talents, skills and potential in people and encourage them to utilize. Most Nobel Prize winners ascribe their success to their mentors and teachers who identified their strengths and inspired them to dream big. Hence, become a mentor to make others come alive and make a difference.

Life is a Train, not a Station

We often hear that life is a journey and we must enjoy every moment of it rather than worry about the destination. It is a fact that everyone intends to reach their destination, but they sacrifice their present moments by thinking about the future. In a similar context, life is a train, not a station. When you think of only station you are confined to a particular moment of your life, not the life. The collection of stations becomes the process of train journey complete. You don’t know when you will step down from the train forever.

You are born to your parents and you will be supported by them and your friends. You will meet strangers and known people in each station. Some will step down from the train while some will enter into the train. Remember that you are born alone and die alone. Hence, do good to others; make others comfortable and happy; and make a difference to the world to leave your legacy to your next generations. Life is great!

Conclusion

Don’t act as per the script written by others. Write your own script in which you are the actor, director and producer. Life is a precious gift. Enjoy it. You cannot travel back to your history. Hence, enjoy every moment of your life journey. Find out what makes you come alive. Be a giver. Add value to others. Make a difference in the lives of others to live beyond your lifetime.
