Understand Your True Identity—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—The Father of “Soft Leadership” & International Leadership Guru

Those who have failed to work toward the truth have missed the purpose of living.” ―Buddha

Some people search for meaning in their lives. They question themselves, “Who am I?”, “What is my identity?”, “Why did I come to this world?”, “What is my role?” “What should be my goal?”, “What I would like to be remembered for?” and so on. This inquiry spirit leads to individual growth and spiritual development. Some people go to the extent of giving up their materialistic possessions to search for meaning in their lives. For instance, Buddha renounced all his materialistic possessions and luxuries to become a great saint.

From Siddhartha Gautama to Buddha (563-483 BC)

There are different versions of Buddha’s reinvention from Siddhartha Gautama. Here is the most accurate one. Siddhartha Gautama was born to a Hindu King in Lumbini. He led a luxurious life since childhood. His father deliberately sheltered him from human suffering, particularly death. One day when he was passing through, he was shocked by the sight of an aged man, a sick man, and a corpse. He was deeply moved by people crying over the dead body. These incidents made him think and find out who he was. He abandoned all comforts of the palace to seek enlightenment. He was enlightened at Bodh Gaya. He acquired the Three Knowledges1. The first knowledge was that of his past lives and the past lives of all beings. The second knowledge was of the laws of karma. The third knowledge was that he was free of all obstacles and released from attachments. During his enlightenment, Buddha discovered the following three great truths: nothing is lost in the universe; everything changes; and the law of cause and effect. He created the following 4 noble truths and the secret to true peace and happiness: The Noble Truth of Suffering; The Noble Truth of The Arising of Suffering; The Noble Truth of the Cessation of Suffering: Suffering Can Cease; and The Noble Truth of The Path leading to the Cessation of Suffering: There is a Path out of Suffering. He gave his first sermon in Sarnath. His wife Yasodhara became a nun and disciple of his son, Rahula became a monk at the age of 7 and spent the rest of his life with his father. He spent many years teaching his philosophy of inner peace, detachment, and how to attain liberation from earthly suffering. His doctrines eventually became what is known as Buddhism. He attained Mahaparinirvana in Kushinagar.

Who Am I?

Ramana Maharishi made the question 'Who Am I?' very popular. With the rapid growth in technology, people are overloaded with information and lost track of their paths. They began questioning the nature of work and life. Hence, the question, 'Who am I?' has become more popular currently. It is a well-admitted fact that only when you love yourselves you will be able to love others. Only when you understand yourself you will be able to understand others. Hence, understand yourself through self-inquiry. The human mind is like a monkey's mind. When you can control and stabilize your mind, you will be able to ask yourself to find meaning in your life.

Yevgeny Pushenko’s Inspiring Spiritual Journey

MARC V. outlines an inspiring story of Yevgeny Pushenko who gave up everything to find meaning in his life in the article titled, ‘10 Refreshing Stories Of Rich People Who Gave Their Fortunes Away as follows: Yevgeny Pushenko2 had a good thing going for him back in the 1990s. The Soviet Union had just broken up and people were free to pursue their dreams. For Pushenko, that freedom enabled him to construct a clothing factory in his hometown of Vladivostok. Soon, business was booming and he had 50 factory workers at one point. However, Pushenko felt empty. Until then, he had not really practiced his faith as an Orthodox Christian, which was suppressed for so long by the authorities. It wouldn’t be long before he met his friends over vodka (of course) and handed them the keys to his factory. His shocked friends found out the reason from his parents the next day: He wanted to be a monk and do a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. For three years, Pushenko walked 15,000 kilometers (9,320 mi) through several countries until he finally reached his destination. Pushenko endured many trials during his journey, from battling extreme weather to fending off suspicious authorities, but remarked that his faith kept him going. After he had finished his pilgrimage, Pushenko renamed himself Athanassios and retired to Mt. Athos in Greece, where he has since resided at a monastery.

Do Happiness and Meaning Go Together?

It is rare to achieve both happiness and meaning in life. The people who want to lead their lives happily are takers while the people who want to provide meaning to their lives are givers. When you lead a happy life, you live only one life but when you lead a meaningful life you live beyond one life. Only in rare cases, do you live in eternity. It all depends on the people and their choices whether they want to live for today or eternity. When you look at Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, and Nelson Mandela they sacrificed their personal lives for the sake of others by giving everything and providing meaning to their lives. Hence, there must be some balance between happiness and meaning to lead a happy and meaningful life.

How to Lead a Meaningful Life?

To lead a purposeful life, break your mental limitations. Anthony Robbins said, “Many people are passionate, but because of their limiting beliefs about who they are and what they can do, they never take the actions that could make their dream a reality.” Therefore, take risks. Remember, not taking a risk is also a risk. Identify your passions and follow them religiously. Remember, you have only one life to live. Focus on the destination but enjoy the journey. Remember, you must balance your personal, professional, and social life. Above all, avoid regrets in life. To summarize, don’t live your life on autopilot. Instead, take control, be a risk-taker, come out of your comfort zone, and explore opportunities to make it big in your life.

People are born and die every day but we remember only a few great leaders because they added immense value to society and provided meaning to their lives. Therefore, understand your true identity to add value to others and provide meaning to your life.

#profmsrao #modi #independenceday Professor M. S. Rao’s Message to India...

Professor M. S. Rao’s Message to Indians on 78th Independence Day!—The Father of “Soft Leadership” & International Leadership Guru

Happy Independence Day!

Dear brothers and sisters of India,

Today we celebrate India's 78th Independence Day! As a citizen of this great country, it is a great honor to share my thoughts with fellow citizens. Today is the day we must take stock of what we have achieved and yet to reach to take India forward aggressively as an economic superpower in the world.

There are innumerable challenges ahead for our country. There is an urgent need for the Indian youth to build skills and abilities to enhance their employability skills. Globally the baby boomers are retiring and there is an urgent need to make the Indian youth as leaders to fill the gap arising out of their retirement. It enables the Indian youth to undertake leadership roles and responsibilities to lead our nation. It also helps build next-generation leaders. There is growing urbanization and there is an urgent need to build homes for the homeless in India. There is also an urgent need to check corruption which has become a cancer to our society. Some of the people are not ethical and most of the money goes into the private coffers of politicians.

India is a land of unity in diversity. To succeed as a nation, we must support secularism. Let us not get carried away by narrow politicians who divide our society in the name of region, religion, language, caste, and community. Let us promote fraternity to bring oneness in all of us. Let us be proud that we are Indians first and Indians last.

We need reforms in infrastructure to have a strong infrastructure to enable us to have a strong superstructure. We must understand the fact that whatever has been tried and tested and was successful in the past might not be successful in the future. Hence, we must explore innovative technological tools and techniques to build a strong India. Additionally, we need to have good neighborly relations to ensure peace and prosperity.

Indian intellectuals must not be part of the problem. In contrast, they must be part of the solution to overcome the leadership challenges. All stakeholders including intellectuals, educators, government, NGOs, and industry must collaborate and work hard earnestly to build a strong India. We must enhance employability skills in Indian students and encourage entrepreneurship in Indian youth. More entrepreneurs mean more opportunities resulting in rapid economic growth.

India has the potential for consumer consumption and can deliver services and products at low cost effectively without compromising the quality.

India is blessed with several strategic advantages and strengths. India is gifted with both natural resources and human resources. It is time we realized the importance of human resources dominated by the young population and utilized them for nation-building. Here are some more strengths of India that no other nation in the world has presently:

  • We are proud to say that India is the largest democracy in the world.

  • We are proud to say that India has the largest speaking English population in the world.

  • We are proud to say that India is a hope for billions of people in the world. There are several people who came to India and made India their home. It is the melting pot. India is noted for its cultural richness and diversity.

  • We are proud to say that India has the oldest civilization and the youngest population in the world.

We are strong in mathematics. We are strong in Information Technology. We invented zero. Albert Einstein once remarked, “We owe a lot to the Indians, who taught us how to count, without which no worthwhile scientific discovery could have been made.” We teach yoga to the world. We are proud to say that the only nation in the world which is widely watched presently is India. Therefore, we must be proud of being Indians. Without your support, our nation would not have come to this level. Therefore, I speak with conviction that we are going to lead this world.

We have achieved independence with lots of struggles and sacrifices by our forefathers. We must work hard to preserve our hard-won freedom to ensure that we take India in the right direction at a fast pace. Let us present India in a positive perspective. Let us work hard to elevate India's image globally. The world is changing rapidly with changes in technology. We must work hard to keep pace with the world to avail the existing global opportunities to lead India as a global superpower.

India is a nation of hope! India is a nation of aspirations! India is a nation of expectations! Remember, the 21st century belongs to India and Indians. India will grow as a power and Indians will grow globally in all spheres spreading India's cultural richness and greatness. We are blessed with several inherent strengths. We must explore and utilize our strengths to build a strong and vibrant India. Let us look at the door that is opened. Be responsible. Be accountable. Be duty-oriented. Make a difference in the lives of others. Lead India! Lead the world! God bless India. Jai Hind!

Passion, Vision, Mission, Execution, and Feedback—The 5-Step Formula for Success—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—The Father of “Soft Leadership” & International Leadership Guru

"Formula for success: Under promise and overachieve." —Tom Peters

Success is the sweetest word that excites all of us. But everyone cannot reach it. Only a few can reach it. Why is it so? Is there any magic wand for the successful people?

Success is the confluence of several ingredients such as passion, vision, mission, execution, and feedback. Whenever you want to achieve something in your life, you must know what you love the most. Passion is like fire brewing in the heart and if tapped becomes an inferno. Passion is closely connected to more heart than mind. It is more of chemistry than physics. Passion does not settle for less. It craves more. It doesn't let you sleep. It keeps you on your toes. It makes you restless. It excites you. It is a typical scenario where it makes you highly focused and task-oriented.

Passion

The key that unlocks energy is desire. It's also the key to a long and interesting life. If we expect to create any drive, any real force within ourselves, we have to get excited.” —Earl Nightingale

Don't ape other successful people blindly as it ends up in a fiasco. What clicks others may not click you. What is required is to find out what touches your heart the most. What are the areas of interest that drive you and give you a kick for moving ahead? Most of the people successful in the world are passionate about what they do. They did what excited them. They did what brought joy while doing. They tapped their inner talents. They discovered their hidden strengths. They carried forward their raw abilities ruthlessly.

Vision

"A person without a goal is like a ship without a rudder." —Denis Waitley

The second successive ingredient for success is vision. It tells you where to go in your life. It reminds you of your present status in life. It directs you in a specific direction based on your passion. Most of the successful people are visionaries. They know what they want and where they want to go in their lives. They set their directions properly and move ahead successfully. Succinctly, it is like placing the ladder on the right side of the wall.

Mission

"Spectacular achievement is always preceded by unspectacular preparation." —Robert H. Schuller

The third ingredient for achieving success is mission. It tells you how to go. Once the direction has been set, the mission unveils the methods, tools, and techniques involved in following a specific direction. It reminds you of the resources that are essential for following your path to success. It is during this journey that constant efforts and energies are essential to move toward success. It is necessary to equip the skills and abilities for achieving. In brief, it is like climbing the ladder.

Execution

"Thinking is easy, acting is difficult, and to put one’s thoughts into action is the most difficult thing in the world." —Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

The fourth ingredient toward success is execution. It is the toughest task. It is easier said than done. There will be several practical bottlenecks that hinder the path to success. There are both internal and external forces and factors that contribute to execution. The internal factors can be easily managed as things are very much within human control. Self-discipline, self-motivation, hard work, perseverance, determination, and grit will play a crucial role. The external environmental factors which are beyond human control may disturb the path to success. A few call these fate. Few call the same as luck. It can either make you or break you as a successful person. People who have high internal locus of control don't believe in destiny. These people strongly feel that their destiny is in their hands. They try to control the external environment as far as possible. If they are not able to manage and face setbacks during the process, they pursue their execution with more energy and enthusiasm. The difference between successful and unsuccessful people is only effective execution. It will tip the scale toward success.

Feedback

If you can't fly, run!

If you can't run, walk!

If you can't walk, crawl!

But whatever you do, keep moving towards your goal........” —Martin Luther

The last ingredient for achieving success is taking feedback. It is a review process where in you look at how far you reached your goals and objectives. If you failed to reach why did you fail? How to overcome the failures and what remedial measures can be taken to pursue the path towards success. Feedback helps in aligning your efforts effectively towards your goals and objectives. Confucius aptly put it, "When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don't adjust the goals, adjust the action steps."

Soar Like an Eagle

"Don't lower your expectations to meet your performance. Raise your level of performance to meet your expectations. Expect the best of yourself, and then do what is necessary to make it a reality." —Ralph Marston

The road to success is not a cakewalk. It requires a lot of struggles and sacrifices. To sum up, you need to be passionate about whatever you undertake. You have to set out your goals and objectives which becomes vision. You set out a clear path or roadmap toward your success and that is known as a mission. Mere words won't pay you but deeds play a crucial role in ensuring success which is execution. Finally, it is equally necessary to take stock of the situation periodically for remedial and corrective action which is known as feedback. When all these ingredients are effectively integrated success would touch your toes.

A warrior doesn't give up what he loves... he finds the love in what he does.” —Socrates

How to Establish Yourself as a Thought Leader Globally—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—The Father of “Soft Leadership” & International Leadership Guru

"The only irreplaceable capital an organization possesses is the knowledge and ability of its people. The productivity of that capital depends on how effectively people share their competence with those who can use it." —Andrew Carnegie

Thought leadership is the application of new ideas and insights for the benefit of others. It calls for creativity and innovation irrespective of the areas of interest. Joel Kurtzman coined this concept way back in 1994. Gradually the concept has spread to other spheres.

Thought leadership is an extension of opinion leadership. Opinion leadership believes in expressing only opinions. However, thought leadership is beyond expressing one's opinions. It is like reflections where value is added by facts and figures. These leaders share their ideas and encourage others' ideas as well. They are the champion of novel ideas and insights.

An organization can also adopt the concept of thought leadership and be active in furthering ideas and insights for the benefit of all. It is neither top-down nor down-top leadership. Thought leaders are leaders who have knowledge, experience, expertise, and ideas to share with others. They have firm and fixed opinions and ideas about the issues and they openly advocate and share with others. At times they are eccentrics and loners. They may not be good at interpersonal skills and social skills. But they think out of the box. They are different people. They are trailblazers and go by the road less traveled.

These leaders are deeply immersed in their activities and they are thinkers and experts in their domains. They constantly create new things and add value for themselves. They are usually loners and lions and walk alone. They are highly passionate about their work and dreams. Here are some attributes of thought leaders.

  • Thought leaders know how to impact others. They not only have ideas but also can articulate their ideas. At times they amplify what exists in the right way. These leaders change the people either through speaking writing or both. They stand out from the pack. They are filled with intellectual integrity.

  • They have a passion for improving the system. They are liberal and generous. They share their knowledge and riches. They believe in bringing out the best among the people. They are intrinsically motivated. They have compassion and humility.

  • They like to be provoked and challenged by others. They energize themselves by spreading and sharing their knowledge. They are original and analytical thinkers. They are creators of ideas carriers of information and messengers of love, peace, and prosperity.

  • They see the big picture and are good at conceptual skills.

  • They are excellent communicators.

  • They are extroverts and enjoy conversations and learn a lot through discussions and deliberations.

  • They are learners with strong convictions.

  • They don’t make decisions under pressure or temptations. They look at the pros and cons and make decisions keeping the interests of others.

  • They cannot think ill of others as their minds are busy with optimistic thoughts. They are surrounded by positive people who spread positive vibes.

  • They always look for a better way of doing things. They are unconventional and rebellious temperament.

  • They scribble their countless thoughts to enlighten and educate others.

  • They have an urge to help and serve others.

Bloggers who share their knowledge can be called thought leaders. They share their knowledge with the world. They know that knowledge should not stay in one place. When water stays in one place it stinks. Similarly, the thought leaders don't let their knowledge remain with them.

Thought leaders are essential to spreading the message of knowledge from one generation to another. They are the torchbearers and champions of human progress, prosperity, and peace.

How to Achieve Cyber Security?—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—The Father of “Soft Leadership” & International Leadership Guru

I think computer viruses should count as life. I think it says something about human nature that the only form of life we have created so far is purely destructive. We’ve created life in our own image.” —Stephen Hawking

Cyber security has become a major challenge globally. Previously nations waged war on land, air, and sea. Presently they wage war through cyberspace. Apart from nations, global organizations find it challenging to ensure cyber security. Research shows that cyberattacks are costing global businesses. The banking and financial sectors have led the way as top targets for cyberattacks in the last five years, with IT and telecom, defense, and the oil and gas sectors following behind. The risks arising from cyberattacks and incidents include the possibility of theft, damage to property, loss of vital data and customers, and loss of confidential information to competitors. Here are some reasons that prevent organizations from preparing against cyber risks—inability to analyze the challenge; inability to hire the right talent; budget constraints; underrating the risk; and inability to adapt and embrace the change.

Challenges

From bank accounts to financial systems, power grids to air traffic controls—our most critical infrastructure remain attractive cyber targets, and if they are ever compromised, the effects could be devastating.” —Mike Quigley

The UK Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) unfolds that most of cyber-attacks can be prevented or mitigated by basic information risk management. Here are some tips to minimize cyber risk. Companies must create a culture of cyber security the way they create organizational culture. They must assess their risk appetite and involve all stakeholders.

There is a growing demand for ICT workers currently. Hence, there is a need for cyber education, skills, and products. Presently people steal on the road. In the future, they will steal data without your knowledge. Hence, individuals, organizations, and CEOs must understand cyber security and take appropriate steps to prevent their organizational data from being stolen. There is no "silver bullet" solution for cyber security. To conclude, you have entered cyberspace where the experts and hackers have the details of your activities with documentary evidence. Therefore, the onus lies with you to ensure the safety of your data and protect your privacy.

The first step in securing our cyber future is education, and that means everything from educating individuals to companies to the next generation of IT professionals.” —Dan Lipinski

As the world is increasingly interconnected, everyone shares the responsibility of securing cyberspace.” —Newton Lee, Counterterrorism and Cybersecurity: Total Information Awareness
