“Teaching is the Mother of all Professions” ―Professor M.S.Rao

I have the practice of attending seminars on teaching and training programs to understand the latest tools and techniques and developments. In October 2015, I had the privilege of attending a seminar on the ‘Art of Teaching’ delivered by an experienced educator with 32 years of teaching service. He delivered the seminar for almost two hours with high energy levels. He kept moving all directions during the seminar to connect with entire audiences, and to gauge their body languages. His passion was evident throughout the seminar. He was around 65 years old. It was a post-lunch session. Usually it is tough to arouse and hold the attention of the audiences at this time because post-lunch session is often referred to as a ‘graveyard session’. Additionally, it was weekend and the audiences were eager to pack up rather to listen to the seminar.  The participants in the seminar were all experienced academicians who might disagree with the teaching tools and techniques shared by this experienced educator. However, I totally enjoyed his seminar and above all, his passion to share his experiences with his colleagues. I am a passionate learner, and I have the habit of learning from all sources to share my knowledge with my students. Here are my views on teaching.


Teaching is a Calling

Teaching is more than a profession. Teaching is a calling. Teaching is a mother of all professions. It requires immense passion to share knowledge with others. Audiences will be of different mindsets, egos, emotions and feelings; and to reach out to them is a very big challenge for educators.

Teachers must create conducive environment in the classroom to ensure that the transfer of knowledge takes place from one person to another or to a group of persons. They must arouse interest in students, develop curiosity in them, and engage them effectively to accomplish the teaching goals and objectives.

Teaching is a profession but teachers are not professionals. Teaching enhances the abilities of students. Teaching is a transactional way of disciplining the students and transformational way of developing personalities and shaping students as healthy citizens. Teaching profession doesn’t give decent income to the teachers but it gives great respect to the teachers from students.   

The world has changed rapidly and the teaching pedagogy and techniques must change with the changing times. Previously it was a faculty-centric education. Presently there is an urgent need for student-centric education.  Students respect the teachers who share their knowledge relevant to their expectations and aspirations. Hence, teachers must update their knowledge and innovate their teaching tools and techniques constantly to ensure student-centric education.  For me, teaching is more than profession. It is my passion. I am a passionate teacher and learner. I would love to die while sharing my knowledge with my students. If there is a rebirth, I would love to be reborn as a professor.

Things You Didn’t Know about Professor M. S. Rao, Ph.D

I was a soldier, entrepreneur, editor, educator, and I am an author, adventurer, explorer, philanthropist, and spiritualist. I am driven, committed, persistent, and resilient. I am an analyst, thinker, problem-solver, and visionary. I don’t celebrate my success. Here are things you didn’t know about me.

Air Force Veteran: I served in the Indian Air Force. It is the most admired organization in my life. 

Early Riser: I get up every day at 4 A.M to author books.

Exercise Regularly: I hit the gym regularly and go for a walk daily. I am a fitness freak.

Voracious Reader: I read thousands of books in my lifetime. I read the newspaper regularly.

Prolific Author: I have authored 50 books so far including the bestselling ‘See the Light in You’ URL: https://www.amazon.com/See-Light-You-Spiritual-Mindfulness/dp/1949003132.

Dyslexic with ADHD: I was dyslexic with an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Frequent Failures: I encountered several struggles and rejections in my life. Harvard has rejected my application for a postdoctoral course in 2016. I want to show to the world that hard work wins against Harvard.

Inspiration: Abraham Lincoln is my inspiration since my childhood. I enjoy reading about his life and leadership. I often write about him in my books and manuscripts. 

The Secrecy with the Letter ‘S': Most of my book titles start with the letter ‘S’.

Self-taught: I am mostly self-taught. I joined the Indian Air Force when I was 18 years old. I completed my graduation after joining the Indian Air Force. I acquired several qualifications while serving including DME, BSc, MA, PGDBM, PGDCLL, and MBA. I earned my Ph.D. in Soft Skills in 2011. I followed the principle of ‘earning and learning.’

Google is Guru: Whenever I have any questions, I visit search engines to learn things. Hence, Google is my guru.

Carry a Notebook and Pen: I often carry a notebook with me to capture the ideas that pop up in my mind. I write down my observations about others. I believe in the slogan ‘a short pencil is better than a long memory.’

Focus: I don’t multitask. I focus clearly on one task, complete it, and then move on to another task.

Punctual: I am punctual. I cultivated this habit after I joined the Indian Air Force.  

Time Management: I value time more than money. I always carry a book or reading material with me to read while traveling.

Blossomed from the Dirt of a Toxic Family Background like a Lotus: I was born into a toxic family and grew up in a toxic environment. My father was an alcoholic and my mother is a naysayer and constant complainer.

Rose from Humble Origins: I lead a simple life. I still belong to a lower-middle-class family living in a 2BHK rented apartment. 

Frugal: I am frugal and live with simplicity and humility.

Traveler: I enjoy traveling. I traveled entire India when I served in the Indian Air Force in various aircraft including the Mi-17 helicopter.

Travel Secretly: I travel to different places without prior information and without unveiling my identity.

Incognito: I rarely unveil my identity to others whenever I travel or go outside. I mingle with others in public places like an ordinary person.

Exile: I have been living in exile since 05 Feb 2007.  

Home Bird: I am not a party animal. I enjoy authoring books and spending time with my wife.

Friendship is Thicker than Blood: I prefer friends to relatives. I am a victim of rogue relatives. I was cheated on by my siblings and relatives but rescued by my friends. Hence, I value friendship more than anything else in the world. 

Believe in Referent Power, not Positional Power: I make friends with people irrespective of their ranks and positions. I don't make friends based on popularity or positions because popularity is a passing cloud and positions are temporary. Precisely, I respect people, not their positions.

Take Feedback Regularly: After the completion of each training program, I sit quietly for some time to take feedback to deliver it better next time. I emphasize excellence.

Appreciate and Inspire Others: Whenever I meet people, I observe a few positive traits; appreciate and inspire them to make a difference. I create positive vibes.

Gifting: I have the practice of gifting memorable items to my friends, relatives, and close associates.

Go to Bed on Time: Usually, I sleep at 10 P.M every day. I sleep less.

Passionate about Students: I enjoy investing my time in the company of students. I love guiding, coaching, mentoring, and grooming students as healthy global citizens without charging any money. I dedicated my books to some students and gifted them.

Share Knowledge Freely: I am a continuous learner and passionate about sharing my knowledge with others. I share my knowledge freely with the world on my four blogs and LinkedIn URL: https://in.linkedin.com/in/professormsrao. I have the vision to share my knowledge freely with one billion people globally.

HeForShe: I advocate gender equality globally. 

Self-made Man: I encountered resistance from many people to reach the present position. Nobody helped me reach my current position. Hence, I am a self-made man. The only person who can claim for my climbing the ladder of success is God.

Philosophy: Health first, education second, and wealth third.

The only Regret in my Life: I didn't have any Guru to guide me. I struggled a lot in my life due to a lack of guidance. Hence, I take a keen interest in guiding, grooming, coaching, and mentoring others so that they should not struggle like me due to lack of a mentor, or a coach.

“Close Down Unethical Private Engineering Colleges in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh” ―Professor M.S.Rao





“If a country is to be corruption free and become a nation of beautiful minds, I strongly feel there are three key societal members who can make a difference. They are the father, the mother and the teacher.” ― APJ Abdul Kalam


There are several private engineering colleges in the state of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh which don’t comply with the guidelines of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and their affiliated universities. These private colleges show fake list of students to claim more fee reimbursements and show fake faculty to show to the regulators during their inspections. They use the principals of their educational institutions as puppets and change their rules and regulations arbitrarily. Some of the private engineering colleges don’t give degree certificates to students who claim fee imbursement at the time of leaving their colleges. Students must pay the money to get their original degree certificates as they have to join employment immediately after their course completion. These colleges swallow the fee reimbursed by the government and also collect fee from their students who claimed fee reimbursement. Likewise, there are many irregularities in the private engineering colleges of both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. This is from the perspective of students.

The faculty members in these private colleges are not treated professionally. They are treated like their personal servants, not like intellectuals who share their knowledge with students. They are not paid summer salaries, and they are removed arbitrarily by the managements of these private colleges. Although the regulating bodies like AICTE, JNTU and OU are aware of these irregularities, they are helpless because these managements have nexus with top politicians across the political parties. Some of the managements of these colleges behave like goons, not as professional entrepreneurs. When faculty leaves the colleges, they are not paid with their last month salaries.  To avoid paying last month salaries, they rise silly charges or file wrong cases to browbeat them to avoid rebellion by other faculty members. Worse, they instigate other faculty to fight with the quitting faculty. It is like ‘divide and rule’ policy. If required, they send goons to the houses of the faculty members who complain about the irregularities within the colleges. These notorious owners of these private colleges use all kinds of threats and coercion to avoid paying last month salary to their employees.  The regulating bodies are aware of these irregularities but they are not in a position to take action against these erring managements.

The press is the fourth pillar of democracy. Hence, it must voice against such irregularities within the educational institutions to bring justice to the faculty, employees and students of these private engineering colleges.  If required, CBI must intervene to check irregularities within these erring private colleges including corruption. Remember, the day corruption enters into Indian educational institutions and Indian Armed Forces, the country will collapse. Hence, coordinated efforts from all stakeholders including parents, students, faculty, press, the regulatory bodies, nonprofits and CBI must be initiated to cleanse the system.  Jai Hind!
