Dear Students, Grow as Global Leaders to Encounter Leadership Challenges and Bridge the Global Leadership Deficit – Professor M.S.Rao

“The highest destiny of the individual is to serve rather than to rule.” – Albert Einstein.

Recently I was interviewed by an eminent newspaper about my Vision 2030: One Million Global Leaders URL: http://professormsraovision2030.blogspot.in/2014/12/professor-m-s-raos-vision-2030-one_31.html  I was asked how I got the idea to create this vision and the need to train only students as global leaders by 2030.

I served in Indian Air Force due to love towards my nation and passion for uniform. I served for some years and acquired several qualifications including DME, BSc, MA, PGDCLL, PGDBM, and MBA. After I left Indian Air Force, I pursued research and earned my PhD in Soft Skills in 2011.  I led a painful life both in defence and civil as I was born into a poor family and encountered innumerable challenges in my personal, professional and social life. While serving in Indian Air Force I acquired knowledge on leadership as military makes the best leaders due to the kind of tough training soldiers receive and the kind of unique challenges they encounter both during war and peace. Hence, I developed passion for leadership. While in Indian Air Force, I did not like the way things were happening in India where we find unscrupulous politicians dividing society in the name of region, religion, caste, and communities. Additionally, lots of money goes into the private coffers of politicians rather than reaching to the poor people in India. I was very much disturbed with the conditions in the Indian society. In fact, corruption has become a cancer to the Indian society. Hence, I thought of training leaders with a global mindset so that they can develop the nation, promote fraternity and work for global peace and prosperity.

After leaving the service, I entered into teaching profession as educational institutions are the ideal places to shape students and equip them with leadership skills and abilities. Second, I focused on students as they are in teenage and they can be molded easily as leaders the way military takes the young people and grooms them as soldiers and leaders. I started getting overwhelming support from students as they were inspired during my teaching and training programs in educational institutions. Students loved me and crowned me with a title, ‘Professor M.S.Rao is Born for the Students’ URL: http://professormsrao.blogspot.com.

As a leadership researcher, I do a lot of research on various leadership styles and how leadership can be used for the benefit of global society. I coined a new leadership perspective ‘Soft Leadership’ which is drawing international attention URL: http://www.emeraldinsight.com/journals.htm?articleid=17087126. This new perspective can be applied both to companies and countries to bring prosperity.  During my research I came to know that there is a looming leadership challenge globally due the retirement of Baby Boomers (old people) and the Gen Y (young people) are not geared up with global leadership challenges due to lack of effective leadership development training programs. That means when the experienced aged leaders exit from service there is an alarming leadership vacuum globally as the young inexperienced people are not ready in the leadership pipeline to take up the leadership roles and responsibilities. Although it is a threat globally, I viewed it as an opportunity. I decided to train students as global leaders to enable them to grow with leadership skills and abilities. So far, I have taught and trained more than 25,000 people. I started taking the support of social media to articulate my vision and I regularly post articles and videos URL: http://www.youtube.com/user/profmsr7 in my social media accounts to share my knowledge. Since I belong to Gen X (middle age) I can become the link between the Baby Boomers (old people) and the Gen Y (young people) to bridge this global leadership deficit. I considered my age and experience in military and academia, and above all, my interest in leadership and my passion for students an opportunity to serve students to groom them as global leaders.  Hence, I pray to God to give me health, knowledge, wisdom, strength and lifespan to build one million students as global leaders by 2030.

The interviewer asked me another question whether it is possible for a one man like me to accomplish my vision. I replied that Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr, Mother Teresa and Nelson Mandela started as an individual but they made a huge difference to the society. Remember, one man can make the difference to the world. That is YOU.

If Content is the Hard Skill, Communication is the Soft Skill – Blend them to Achieve Your Leadership Success – Professor M.S.Rao

“If we don't fight for what we 'stand for' with our passionate words and honest actions, do we really 'stand' for anything?” ― Tiffany Madison, Black and White

In one of my leadership development training programs a senior leader asked me whether content is more important than communication. I explained to him as follows:

It is a debatable topic with different views and opinions. It is always the type of topic we take matters a lot in life. What we convey matters more. People are wise to assess whether the person has the content or communication. They may often get attracted by communication initially but ultimately they look at the content. If there is no substance, people won’t take the person seriously. Some people persuade through their communication skills but they must appreciate the fact that it is the content that survives and lasts forever. People fall flat on the ground with communication and without content. It is like style over substance. Ultimately, substance matters more than style. It is true that actions speak louder than words.

There are many leaders in the world who rose due to communication but vanished as they lacked in content. In contrast, there are leaders who lasted for a long time due to their content despite having initial hiccups due to dearth of communication.  Remember, both ‘what’ you speak and ‘how’ you speak are important but at the end of the day what you speak is more important than how you speak.  When you market goods people often look at the external appearance and buy them. If the goods don’t deliver promised results, they lose relevance as there will be no repeat orders. There are authors who write books and market aggressively. Readers may buy once due to marketing strategy but finally they will recommend to others only when the book has the content. They will also read the other titles of the same author if the book has the desired content.

I am an author and wrote 30 books on leadership with two of my award-winning books are the bestselling globally - 21 Success Sutras for Leaders URL: http://www.amazon.com/21-Success-Sutras-Leaders-ebook/dp/B00AK98ELI that has been ranked as one of the Top 10 Leadership Books of the Year – 2013 by San Diego University, USA URL: http://www.sandiego.edu/soles/departments/leadership-studies/thought-leadership/book-award.php and  Success Tools for CEO Coaches: Be a Learner, Leader, and Ladder URL: http://www.amazon.in/SUCCESS-COAHES-LEARNER-LEADER-LADDER/dp/9351102491  is the Community Award Winner for 2014 by Small Business Trends, USA URL: http://bookawards.smallbiztrends.com/management-2014/success-tools-for-ceo-coaches-8/.  As an author, I create ideas and insights and send the manuscript to my publisher. My publisher gets my manuscripts edited by experts who convey my content effectively through right written communication skills. As an author, I create the best possible content and as an editor, the content gets better communicated to the readers. As a result, my books are sold and I could grow internationally as an award-winning author.

When we look at American President Abraham Lincoln, he had both content and communication. Communication is essential to reach out to people with a promise. It gives visibility. But it is the content that gives credibility. Both credibility and visibility are essential to achieve professional success in this world. If content is infrastructure, communication is the superstructure. And both are essential to ensure durability and longevity. If content is the hard skill, communication is the soft skill. A judicious blend of both hard and soft skills is essential to achieve your professional success. Hence, both content and communication are two sides of the same coin and one without another doesn’t have any meaning. To conclude, if content is the king, communication is the queen. Both king and queen are essential to rule the world.

Groom Leaders around You to Leave Your Leadership Legacy – Professor M.S.Rao

“If you would not be forgotten as soon as you are dead, either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.” - Benjamin Franklin

There are many people born and dead everyday in this world without unlocking their potential. In fact, all of you are gifted you with an immense potential but you don’t know how to realize and unlock it. If you realize your hidden potential, you will touch your tipping point quickly. You can grow personally, professionally and socially and provide meaning to your life. People around you applaud your achievements and contribution. Here is a blueprint where you can unlock your potential to grow as a leader, build your leadership brand and leave your leadership legacy.
  • Accept the fact that you are blessed with an immense potential.
  • Find out your passions. Examine what truly excites you and keeps you up in the night. It helps you identify your talents and inspires you to work hard and smart relentlessly.
  • Build skills and abilities around your talents.  Have a laser-focus approach and contribute your best consistently. Don’t get deviated by external disturbances. If you work hard consistently in your domain for 10,000 hours, you will become a successful professional. Over a period of time, you be regarded as a leader in your domain.
  • Build your leadership brand in your domain regularly brick by brick by sharing your expertise, knowledge, skills and abilities with others through various means including conferences, training programs, forums, books and social media.
  • Protect your leadership brand and ensure longevity by reinventing your leadership brand with changing times and technologies. It helps you stay relevant during your lifetime.
  • Build next generation leaders who will carry forward your vision, principles, philosophies and expertise to next generation. It helps your ideas and insights reach out to next generation and beyond your lifetime. In this way, you can leave leadership legacy beyond your lifetime.

Be a visionary. Maintain impeccable integrity. Walk your talk. Spread fame in successes and take blame during failures. Be an altruist. Help people around you. Make a difference in the lives of others.  Articulate your vision. Emphasize on means, not ends. Utilize your strengths to build the strengths of the people around you. Groom them as leaders to leave your leadership legacy.

“The only thing you take with you when you’re gone is what you leave behind.” - John Allston
