Stop Being Too Nice To People

“Nothing is greater than serving others with a great heart. We live in a world where there is a huge competition for takers and the least competition for givers. So, be a giver and serve your societies and communities to build a better world.” ―Professor M.S. Rao

Being kind and helping others is a positive sign. But there is a limit to this. Don't become a people pleaser. If you are too nice to people you will be taken for granted. You may be exploited by people. So, understand the difference between pleasing people and serving the people. Don’t apologize when you are not guilty.

Being too nice is often treated as weakness the way some people treat compassion as a weakness. When you are too nice, people ridicule you and take you for granted. You won’t earn respect from some people.

Being too nice may lead to stress and burnout because you want to please people. Here are some tips to lead a mindful life. Be assertive. Set boundaries. Strike a balance. Draw the line. Emphasize win-win. Overcome your insecurities. Boost your self-esteem. Don't crave validation and recognition from people who lack credibility.

Helping others is a sign of a caring and compassionate person. So, don’t compromise your compassion with users and manipulators. Remember, being generous is good being overgenerous is often treated as a sign of weakness. Be a giver but be cautious of users and manipulators.

Takeaway: Be nice. Don't be too nice to people to avoid being misunderstood by others and prevent you from being used by manipulators.

Why Are Some Leaders Hated?

“The good leaders do the best thing in the prevailing situation whereas the great leaders do the right thing in any situation irrespective of the effects and outcomes.” ―Professor M.S. Rao

Leaders in the ruling party have several challenges, especially from the opposition parties. When they make decisions, some people are adversely affected. When the critics become too aggressive, they develop hatred against leaders. Hatred against leaders cannot be avoided in public life. Leaders are not people pleasers. They walk their talk and make courageous decisions. Leaders such as Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr, John F. Kennedy, and Mahatma Gandhi were assassinated because they could not please all sections of people.

Some of the greatest leaders were ignored and ridiculed by others initially. Later the same people respected them. Ordinary people rarely recognize the greatness in leaders. Mahatma Gandhi once remarked, “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.” Leaders including Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr, Mother Teresa, and Nelson Mandela were ignored and ridiculed initially but they are respected now.

When leaders challenge the status quo, people are often scared of change, and the latter develop hatred against the leaders. Leaders must embrace criticism gracefully to excel as great leaders. Leaders must make decisions keeping the larger interests of the people to gain confidence and command respect from others. They must keep people above politics. They must keep people before profit.

Takeaway: Leadership is not a popularity contest. Leadership is to make courageous decisions keeping the long-term interests in view.
