How to Learn From Your Failures—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

Only those who dare to fail greatly can achieve greatly” —Robert F Kennedy.

Facing failure and criticism is the most challenging task for any human being. Everyone loves success and hates failure. This is inherent in human nature. Is it possible to achieve success without failure?

What is Failure?

There is always a gap between expectations and reality. When the outcome is against our predictions despite putting in sincere efforts and energies, then it is termed as a failure. The outcome may be against us either due to internal factors like unknown mistakes or due to external forces, which are beyond the human span of control.

Importance of Failure

Failure brings down excessive ego and makes an individual humble and simple. It also eliminates overconfidence among individuals. Failure helps in making the individual highly focused on their goals and objectives. Some people feel too big for their shoes. Failure helps them to resize the same. It makes people more tolerant, and they start empathizing with others. Failure makes people flexible, receptive, and more accommodating. Here are some tools, techniques, and tips after facing failure.

Keep cool and composed. Any extra activities at this juncture result in adding fuel to the fire. When faced with failure, the human mind gets tense and does not think logically and analytically. Hence, do not become hasty.

"Ninety-nine percent of all failures come from people who have a habit of making excuses," said George Washington Carver. Don't show your anger over your failure to others. When you are responsible for the failure, then what is the meaning of transferring your anger to others?

Go by the bottom-up approach by looking at the root of the problem and tackling it accordingly.

If the root of the problem is big, then slice it down into small pieces, analyze the individual slices independently, and integrate them.

Immediately think about how you went wrong and where you went wrong. Thorough analysis helps diagnose the reasons behind the failure and what transpired and prompted failure. This step will help go for introspection and provide remedial action so that the mistakes are not repeated in the future.

Look clearly whether the failure is the result of internal factors or external forces, which are beyond human control. If the mistake occurred due to external forces, then it is futile to think through it. If the mistake occurred due to internal factors, then this is the time to rectify and take remedial steps.

Accept the fact that failure is universal. Let us know and accept the fact that small achievers have small failures and big achievers have big failures. It is a well-admitted fact that the higher the fall, the higher the rise. Think your failure is small when compared with others, as it brings solace to you.

Take it up as a challenge. Don't take every problem as a problem; rather, treat it as an opportunity. It is only the test of fire that makes fine steel. An optimist looks for opportunities from problems, whereas a pessimist looks for problems in each opportunity.

Discuss the failure with your trusted colleagues and friends who can provide the right direction and guidance. Discussion generates wider dimensions and helps to get at the broader format for failure.

A Take-Home Message

Arrogance brings you down, and humbleness brings you up. When you get tumble, you get humble. Bounce back from failure like a rubber ball.

"History has demonstrated that the most notable winners usually encountered heartbreaking obstacles before they triumphed. They won because they refused to become discouraged by their defeats." —B.C.Forbes.

How to Build a Leadership Legacy Worth Leaving—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

Credibility is a leader's currency. With it, he or she is solvent; without it, he or she is bankrupt.” ―John C. Maxwell

Building credibility is easier said than done. It requires character, commitment, consistency, and communication. It must be loaded with immense energy, enthusiasm, and effort. It needs transparency and building trust in others. Some leaders survived and succeeded despite being on the brink of bankruptcy because of their credibility and visibility. In this regard, we will discuss tools and techniques to build your credibility to leave your legacy.

Tools to Build Your Credibility Globally

The most essential quality for leadership is not perfection but credibility. People must be able to trust you.” ―Rick Warren

Be an expert in your area. Being a recognized expert is better than being an expert. Social media helps to get recognized quickly. So, build a network of followers to get recognized and build your leadership brand. Here are some tools to build your credibility globally. Network with eminent and credible personalities globally. Open a blog and share your ideas, ideals, and insights regularly. Author books. Get forewords and endorsements from eminent people for your books. Offer training programs. Be active on social media platforms to share free knowledge with the world. Add value to others and make a difference. Work for satisfaction, not for recognition.

There is a difference between credibility and visibility. Being credible is more important than being visible because popularity is like a passing cloud. Hence, be available online with credibility. Remember, people don’t spend their precious time if you are not an expert and credible.

Leave Your Leadership Legacy

Without character, there is no credibility; and without credibility, there is no trust.” ―Warren G. Bennis

Legacy means people must think about you when you are no more in this world. They must remember your contribution. Great leaders including Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr, Mother Teresa, and Nelson Mandela are remembered and revered for their contributions. So, focus on leaving your legacy. To summarize, you must walk your talk and lead from the front. You must win the confidence of your colleagues. You must win the respect of others. You must emphasize more on character and less on charisma. You must sacrifice for the sake of others. You must keep people before profit. To conclude, build your credibility to leave your leadership legacy to the next generations.

If you would not be forgotten, as soon as you are dead and rotten, either write things worth reading or do things worth writing." ―Benjamin Franklin, Poor Richard's Almanack

How to Build Your Self-Determination?—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.” —Mahatma Gandhi.

Self-determination is a cluster of several skills, abilities, knowledge, beliefs, traits, and talents that enable people to engage themselves with tons of self-confidence. It comes from your inner strength and courage. It helps to take on the challenges and changes in life head-on. It strengthens your inner belief to take the battle to its logical end. Self-determination is something hidden that can be demonstrated through actions, not by external appearance.

Importance of Self-Determination

The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.” —Vincent T. Lombardi

Self-determination is necessary to succeed in life. Self-determination helps in equipping you with the necessary strength and courage to meet the day-to-day challenges in your life. Hannibal rightly said, “We will either find a way or make one.”

Self-determination is required to break your conditioned thinking. People, by continuous reading and experience, tend to develop a particular mindset that is hard to break. As the world is changing rapidly with changing technology, people have to develop adaptability to survive in the cutthroat competitive world. Self-determination plays a crucial role in breaking the traditional barriers and boundaries.

How to Build Self-Determination?

Every man is the architect of his own fortune.” —Sallust

  • Take an ideal and successful person as a role model and draw inspiration.

  • Don’t let past failures haunt you. Learn lessons from failures and try again with optimism and confidence.

  • Always look for positive elements in every adversity, defeat, or sorrow.

  • Be clear about your goals and vision. Find out what you want clearly and create a blueprint to achieve it.

  • Be sympathetic and empathetic with others.

  • Concentrate only on your efforts and energies, not on results.

  • Monitor your progress and take continuous feedback.

  • Always take care of your mental and physical health.

  • Never entertain cynicism and pessimism to creep into your mind.

  • Always look for solutions and don’t brood too much on problems.

  • Always associate with positive people,  as it generates positive vibes.

  • And finally, trust in God.

Conclusion

I don't know what the future may hold, but I know who holds the future.” —Ralph Abernathy

Self-determination helps you build your hidden potential, and you can unleash the same to achieve all-round success as and when required. It is a magical key to success. It turns your adversities into opportunities. To put it in the words of Edward Gibbon, “The winds and waves are always on the side of the ablest navigators.” To sum up, self-determination helps you become an influential personality, thus making a difference in the lives of others.
