Life Is Not A Race! | A Life Lesson From Professor M.S. Rao
“If someone
asks me a question, ‘What is it you see when you look out the window that is
visible but not yet seen by others’ I will answer, ‘I see a world filled with
people with a huge potential lying untapped. If I can identify their strengths
and inspire them to unlock their potential, I feel that I have made a
difference in the world.’” —Professor M.S. Rao
We are
caught up in a cutthroat competitive world where we compete with others ruthlessly
to stay ahead of the life race without understanding the consequences and
repercussions.
You must
take a pause and reflect on yourself to lead your life with purpose and
meaning. There is no sense in getting into the rat race neglecting our relations
and the people around us. Enjoy each moment. Every one of you is a unique
being. If you are an employer, ensure work-life integration. If you are an
employee, emphasize work-life balance. There is growing mental illness and
depression globally because of the rat race. It is essential to end this rat
race to lead your life mindfully and meaningfully.
Social media
has thrown both challenges and opportunities where people often compare with
others without understanding others' challenges. Social media users often
present their rosy pictures. People don't understand it. Some of the so-called
spiritual gurus and guides on social media are failures in their personal
lives. Finally, they became spiritual guides and gurus. So don't compare with
them. Don't compete with others. Only compete with yourself and raise your bar
constantly.
We are into
a goal-oriented society. It is essential to be process-oriented, not
goal-oriented to enjoy life. Focus more
on the process, and less on the goals. When you reach your goals, you lose your
enthusiasm. So enjoy the process to reach your goal. Reset your goals. Enjoy
your journey, not your destination. Be a karma yogi.
When
everyone wants to cross the finish line first, then the problem starts. Ensure
that you cross the finish line at your own pace. Collaboration rather than
competition is essential. There is more meaning in collaboration rather than in
competition.
Takeaway: Start every
day on a clean slate. Life is a gift from God. Enjoy adding value to yourself
and others. Don't convert your entire life into a race. Compete with yourself,
not with others to lead your life with purpose and meaning. Life is not a race,
a journey. Enjoy the journey to lead your life meaningfully and mindfully.
“Life is not
a race but a pace we need to maintain with reality.” ―Amit Abraham

Will You Follow Passion Or Profit? | Professor M.S. Rao
“Education
is a lifelong process. It is a great amplifier and accelerator. It must help us
learn to live sustainably. It must create curiosity and open the minds of
students. It must ignite the minds of the students and help them convert
information into knowledge.” ―Professor M.S. Rao
Follow your
passion, profit will follow you. Work for a cause, not applause. Most leaders
started following their passion and made it big. Passion was primary while profit
was secondary for them. Most leaders served their societies because they were
passionate about service. Subsequently, they earned applause. Service was
primary and fame was secondary for them. For most entrepreneurs, passion was
primary and profit was secondary. When you follow your passion and serve people
with good intentions you will get good results. So, focus on passion, not
profit.
For me,
passion is more important than so-called profit. I struggled and suffered since
my childhood having been born in a toxic family and grown up in a toxic
environment. Right from childhood, I am passionate about education and
learning, not about money. Hence, I could not earn money and I still belong to
a lower-middle-class family. I did not compromise with my principles and
philosophies resulting in more sufferings in my life. Additionally, I was
betrayed by my rogue relatives.
As an
educator and professor, I decided to share my knowledge freely with the world
to groom students as global leaders. I enjoy doing it despite having several
financial challenges. I enjoy following my passion, not profit. I served as a
professor because of my passion to educate and shape students despite being
underpaid. I write books despite being aware that it is a poorly paid profession.
But I am passionate about writing.
Since I took
voluntary retirement from Indian Air Force, I don't get a pension. So, I still
struggle due to a lack of finance. I worked in private educational institutions
that don't pay as per the guidelines and don't pay salaries properly. I am
unemployed for almost six years without any regular flow of income. Still, I
continue writing books despite no income. Coronavirus has worsened my financial
condition. I am continuing my passion for writing and sharing knowledge despite
several financial constraints with the hope that I will have a decent income to
survive in the future.
Takeaway: Don't let
passion take a backseat because of profit. Do what you feel good about.
Contribute your expertise and knowledge to add value to the people around you.
You are blessed with one life. Do what you are passionate about to avoid
regrets on your deathbed.
"Science
is a wonderful thing if one does not have to earn one's living at it."
―Albert Einstein
