See The Light In You: Be Like A Lotus

“The lotus is the most beautiful flower, whose petals open one by one. But it will only grow in the mud. In order to grow and gain wisdom, first, you must have the mud --- the obstacles of life and its suffering. ... The mud speaks of the common ground that humans share, no matter what our stations in life. ... Whether we have it all or we have nothing, we are all faced with the same obstacles: sadness, loss, illness, dying, and death. If we are to strive as human beings to gain more wisdom, more kindness, and more compassion, we must have the intention to grow as a lotus and open each petal one by one.” ―Goldie Hawn

People often blame the mud around them. When you view it positively, lotus blossoms from the mud. Great people rose from the mud of toxic families and toxic relationships because they did not blame their families and circumstances. Instead, they created their destinies with their hard work and left their legacies.

I was born into a toxic family and grew up in a toxic environment. My father was an alcoholic and my mother is a naysayer and constant complainer. I was passionate about education and learning but my parents were not in a position to provide me education. Then I created my own destiny by joining the Indian Air Force when I was only 18 years old. After I joined the Indian Air Force, I reinvented myself and evolved as a healthy individual and leader. I encountered several challenges in the Indian Air Force as military life is tough and rigorous. Yet I found some time and utilized for my education. I sacrificed my annual leave and casual for my education. I invested some portion of my monthly salary for education and acquired my BSc, MA, PGDCLL, PGDBM, and MBA. Indian Air Force gave me DME qualification after completion of my conversion course. After leaving the service, I joined for Ph.D. in Soft Skills in 2007 and earned my Ph.D. in 2011. Even today, I read and write a lot. It is obvious from my biography that there is no end to learning. We should not blame our bad families and lack of resources for not accomplishing our dreams. Remember that it is the bad tradesmen who blame their tools. It is the wise tradesmen who work with what they have and execute their tasks effectively. To conclude, be like a lotus to leave your leadership legacy to the next generations.

“Lotus flowers lead harrowing journeys. Their seeds sprout in murky swamp water, thick with dirt and debris and snarls of roots. For a lotus to bloom, she must forge her way through this terrible darkness, avoid being eaten by fish and insects, and keep pressing onward, innately knowing, or at least hoping, that there is sunlight somewhere above the water's surface, if she can only summon the strength to get there. And when she does, she emerges unscathed by her journey and blooms triumphantly.” ―Sarah Jio, All the Flowers in Paris
