Professor M.S. Rao’s Messages to Learners and Leaders―Share if You Care!

“In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.” ―Albert Schweitzer

I would love to share the following messages in this new year and decade.

Enhance Your Employability

“Your hard skills help you acquire employment and your soft skills help you ensure your employability.  Hence, integrate hard and soft skills to fast-track your career.” —Professor M.S. Rao

I would like to share a few things with you today. There is no permanent employment in this world. There is only permanent employability.  The days of permanent employment is gone. At the time of passing out from educational institutions, most students think that they don’t have to learn further. The real learning starts in the corporate world. What educational institutions gave you is paper qualifications. What you must do is to acquire the ropes of learning with a practical approach. You must acquire your knowledge, skills, and abilities regularly to enhance your employability. When you enhance your employability, you will be in great demand and will be able to shortlist your employers.

Blend Hard and Soft Skills

“Mostly overlooked, soft skills play a large part in actually keeping one’s job. While people are hired for their hard skills like knowledge, oftentimes people get fired for their lack of soft skills, including their emotional intelligence.” —Professor M. S. Rao

Most people mistake soft skills for people skills. Soft skills are all about your personality, attitude, and behavior. They are different from hard skills. Hard skills are your domain skills which are also known as technical competence. Soft skills involve communicating with others pleasingly and politely. They help deliver hard skills effectively. People are hired for hard skills but fired due to a lack of soft skills. Hence, understand the importance of soft and hard skills. A judicious blend of soft and hard skills is essential to achieve your professional success.

Learn, Unlearn, and Relearn

“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” ―Alvin Toffler

Companies including Kodak, Nokia and Blockbuster have vanished from the market because they failed to reinvent as per the changing times and technologies. Currently, companies including Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Apple are ruling globally. If these companies don’t unlearn and relearn, they will vanish from the market. It is predicted that most of the companies that are ruling the market presently may not exist after 10 years in this age of disruption. What is essential is to learn, unlearn and relearn. Remember, life is all about learning, unlearning and relearning.

Conclusion

“The most important thing for a young man [woman] is to establish a credit—a reputation, character.” —John D. Rockefeller

Throughout my life, I believed in two things―continuous learning and constant feedback. I rose from a humble background. I joined the Indian Air Force when I was 19 years, and I was not even a graduate. I have an urge to learn and grow and acquired several qualifications including DME, BSc, MA, MBA, PGDCLL, PGDBM while serving in the Indian Air Force. I was learning and earning. After leaving the service, I started my Ph.D. and acquired in 2011 in the area of soft skills. It is an example for others that nothing can stop them from achieving their goals. They must work hard, wise and smart to accomplish their goals.

Currently, there are innumerable opportunities for millennials. What they must have is an idea and fire in their belly. If they possess them, they can conquer the world. At the end, I implore to achieve success with integrity.

“I believe in achieving success with integrity which is often ridiculed by many people. Ultimately it is the ethics and etiquette that will make you a great leader in the long run.” —Professor M.S. Rao
