“Education is for Sale, not Educators” ―Professor M.S.Rao












“It requires a lot of courage to become an educator as it is not for everybody. If a parent is unworthy, children are spoiled; if a doctor neglects his duty, the patient dies; if an engineer performs poorly, the infrastructure collapses; and if an educator makes a mistake, an entire generation is ruined.” – Professor M.S. Rao


It is reported that the name of the same faculty as a teaching resource is available in more than one college. It shows the irregularities in colleges in the state of Telangana and other states in India. Although it is known to many, nobody takes it seriously. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana[1], nearly 8,000 names were repeated across more than one college, Mr. Dubbudu and his team found, which meant that a quarter of the total engineering faculty in the States consisted of duplicate names. In all, nearly 90 per cent of the over 1,500 accredited engineering colleges in the States had at least one ‘duplicate’ teacher on their faculty.

Some of the private engineering colleges in Telangana State are run by liquor barons and real estate brokers who converted these private colleges into money spinners. They don’t follow professional standards and they lack ethics and etiquette thus bringing down the standards of education and educators.  Some of them don’t follow rules and regulations as they have close nexus with politicians and political parties. They break rules and regulations and collect huge fee from students for being absent to the institutions and on various other projects. They don’t pay the salaries to their employees when the latter leave their educational institutions. They also cow down the leaving employees if the latter intend to take legal action against these erring educational institutions. Majority of educators don’t fight and they leave without taking the salary of the last month. There are a very few faculty who are ready to fight legally. But they are harassed by the managements by leveling wrong cases against them.

The managements of the private engineering colleges are noted for pitting one faculty member against another faculty member to break their unity and to create ill-will among them. It is like a ‘divide and rule’ which is not healthy in the long term for the Indian education. Most faculty members don’t intervene when one of their colleagues is harmed or denied with rights and salary as they think it is the problem of an individual. In fact, they must know that it is everybody’s problem in the long-run. When management harms the interests of a faculty member, they can harm other faculty members also when the time comes. Hence, faculty members must unite to fight for their rights.

Paying bribes and getting ranked has become the order of the day for these notorious educational institutions. They are busy building their brands rather than building infrastructure and imparting quality education to their students.

Most of the educational institutions don’t pay salaries as per the latest Pay commission. They show on records that they pay the salaries as per the AICTE norms but take the differential amount from the faculty every month.  Therefore, the Income Tax department must check such transactions and close down the erring educational institutions immediately. If required, CBI inquiry must be ordered on the erring educational institutions for cheating students and faculty and on corruption. They cheat students by taking money by way of condonation fee and cheat faculty by not paying last month salary and also summer vacation salary. There are some private educational institutions who hire senior faculty members to show during inspections of AICTE, JNTU and their respective universities and terminate their services once inspections are over by citing improper feedback or on disciplinary grounds.

Most of the regulators are aware of these irregularities. To please those regulators, the managements of the educational institutions invite such regulators to functions and on ‘graduation day’ celebrations and offer them decent money or gifts. As a reciprocal response, such regulators turn blind eye to the complaints filed by the faculty members.

The TRS government took some corrective steps to check the current irregularities. It conducted sudden inspections to check irregularities. Some of the managements of these private colleges are noted for manipulation. They shift faculty from one college to another college within their group of educational institutions to meet the JNTU and AICTE requirements.

To summarize, it is essential to clean the education system and the practices in private engineering colleges in Telangana and other states. Remember, the day corruption enters into educational institutions and armed forces, the country will collapse. Hence, all stakeholders including students, faculty, regulators, media and nonprofits must unite to check irregularities in erring private educational institutions to clean the system and to add sanctity to education. Remember, education is for sale, not educators.

“Teaching is the Mother of all Professions” ―Professor M.S.Rao

I have the practice of attending seminars on teaching and training programs to understand the latest tools and techniques and developments. In October 2015, I had the privilege of attending a seminar on the ‘Art of Teaching’ delivered by an experienced educator with 32 years of teaching service. He delivered the seminar for almost two hours with high energy levels. He kept moving all directions during the seminar to connect with entire audiences, and to gauge their body languages. His passion was evident throughout the seminar. He was around 65 years old. It was a post-lunch session. Usually it is tough to arouse and hold the attention of the audiences at this time because post-lunch session is often referred to as a ‘graveyard session’. Additionally, it was weekend and the audiences were eager to pack up rather to listen to the seminar.  The participants in the seminar were all experienced academicians who might disagree with the teaching tools and techniques shared by this experienced educator. However, I totally enjoyed his seminar and above all, his passion to share his experiences with his colleagues. I am a passionate learner, and I have the habit of learning from all sources to share my knowledge with my students. Here are my views on teaching.


Teaching is a Calling

Teaching is more than a profession. Teaching is a calling. Teaching is a mother of all professions. It requires immense passion to share knowledge with others. Audiences will be of different mindsets, egos, emotions and feelings; and to reach out to them is a very big challenge for educators.

Teachers must create conducive environment in the classroom to ensure that the transfer of knowledge takes place from one person to another or to a group of persons. They must arouse interest in students, develop curiosity in them, and engage them effectively to accomplish the teaching goals and objectives.

Teaching is a profession but teachers are not professionals. Teaching enhances the abilities of students. Teaching is a transactional way of disciplining the students and transformational way of developing personalities and shaping students as healthy citizens. Teaching profession doesn’t give decent income to the teachers but it gives great respect to the teachers from students.   

The world has changed rapidly and the teaching pedagogy and techniques must change with the changing times. Previously it was a faculty-centric education. Presently there is an urgent need for student-centric education.  Students respect the teachers who share their knowledge relevant to their expectations and aspirations. Hence, teachers must update their knowledge and innovate their teaching tools and techniques constantly to ensure student-centric education.  For me, teaching is more than profession. It is my passion. I am a passionate teacher and learner. I would love to die while sharing my knowledge with my students. If there is a rebirth, I would love to be reborn as a professor.

Things You Didn’t Know about Professor M. S. Rao, Ph.D—The Father of “Soft Leadership” & International Leadership Guru

I am a soldier, entrepreneur, editor, educator, author, explorer, enlightener, thinker, writer, researcher, mentor, motivator, professor, philosopher, reformer, traveler, blogger, storyteller, volunteer, activist, futurist, analyst, strategist, and coach. I am a problem-solver and visionary. I am driven, committed, persistent, and resilient. I don’t celebrate my success. Here are things you didn’t know about me.

Air Force Veteran: I served in the Indian Air Force. It is the most admired organization in my life.

Early Riser: I get up every day at 4 A.M to author books and share my knowledge freely with the world.

Exercise Regularly: I hit the gym regularly and go for a walk daily. I am a fitness freak.

Voracious Reader: I read thousands of books in my lifetime.

Prolific Author: I have authored 53 books, including the bestselling See the Light in You’ URL: https://www.amazon.com/See-Light-You-Spiritual-Mindfulness/dp/1949003132. I author books on behavior and personality. It is due to the doctoral degree that I acquired in soft skills.

Strategic Thinker: I am blessed with the ability to predict the future and contain the damages arising from unforeseen situations by remaining stoic and not antagonizing others.

Dyslexic with ADHD: I was dyslexic with an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. I had a panic disorder.

Survivor: I survived a brain hemorrhage in May 2021.

Frequent Failures: I encountered several struggles and rejections in my life. Harvard has rejected my application for a postdoctoral course in 2016. I want to show the world that hard work wins against Harvard.

Inspiration: Abraham Lincoln is my inspiration since my childhood. I enjoy reading about his life and leadership. I often write about him in my books and manuscripts.

The Secrecy with the Letter ‘S': Most of my book titles start with the letter ‘S’.

Autodidact: I am mostly self-taught. I joined the Indian Air Force when I was 18 years old to support my parents financially. I completed my graduation after joining the Indian Air Force. I acquired several qualifications while serving including DME, BSc, MA, PGDBM, PGDCLL, and MBA. I earned my Ph.D. in Soft Skills in 2011. I followed the principle of ‘earning and learning.’

Google is Guru: Whenever I have any questions, I visit search engines to learn things. Hence, Google is my guru.

Carry a Notebook and Pen: I often carry a notebook with me to capture the ideas that flash on my mind. I write down my observations about others. I believe in the slogan ‘a short pencil is better than a long memory.’

Focus: I focus clearly on one task, complete it, and then move on to another task. I don’t multitask.

Emphasize Excellence, not Perfection. When I undertake a task, I give my best to make it successful. I don’t invest half-hearted efforts.

Punctual: I am punctual. I cultivated this habit after I joined the Indian Air Force.

Time Management: I value time more than money. I always carry a book or reading material with me to read while traveling.

Blossomed from the Dirt of a Toxic Family Background like a Lotus: I was born into a toxic family and grew up in a toxic environment. My father was an alcoholic and my mother is a naysayer and constant complainer.

Rose from Humble Origins: I lead a simple life. I still belong to a lower-middle-class family living in a 2BHK rented apartment.

Frugal: I am frugal and live with simplicity and humility.

Traveler: I enjoy traveling. I traveled the entire of India when I served in the Indian Air Force in various aircraft including the Mi-17 helicopter.

Travel Secretly: I travel to different places without prior information and without unveiling my identity.

Incognito: I rarely unveil my identity to others whenever I travel or go outside. I mingle with others in public places like an ordinary person.

Home Bird: I am not a party animal. I enjoy reading books and spending time with my wife.

Friendship is Thicker than Blood: I prefer friends to relatives. I am a victim of rogue relatives. I was cheated on by my siblings and relatives but rescued by my friends. Hence, I value friendship more than anything else in the world.

Believe in Referent Power, not Positional Power: I make friends with people irrespective of their ranks and positions. I don’t discriminate while making friends. I don't make friends based on popularity or positions because popularity is a passing cloud and positions are temporary. Precisely, I respect people, not their positions.

Take Feedback Regularly: After the completion of each training program, I sit quietly for some time to take feedback to deliver it better next time. I improve my style of writing based on the feedback I receive from my readers.

Appreciate and Inspire Others: Whenever I meet people, I observe a few positive traits; appreciate and inspire them to make a difference. I create positive vibes.

Gifting: I have the practice of gifting memorable items to my friends, relatives, and close associates.

Go to Bed on Time: Usually, I sleep at 10 P.M every day. I sleep less.

Passionate about Students: I enjoy investing my time in the company of students. I love guiding, coaching, mentoring, and grooming students as healthy global citizens without charging any money. I dedicated my books to some students and gifted them.

Share Knowledge Freely: I am a continuous learner and passionate about sharing my knowledge with others. I have the vision to share my knowledge freely with one billion people globally.

HeForShe: I advocate gender equality globally with a commitment #1874300.

Self-made Man: I encountered resistance from many people to reach the present position. Nobody helped me reach my current position. Hence, I am a self-made man. The only person who can claim for my climbing the ladder of success is God.

The only Regret in my Life: I didn't have any Guru to guide me. I struggled a lot in my life due to a lack of guidance. Hence, I take a keen interest in guiding, grooming, coaching, and mentoring others so that they should not struggle like me due to lack of a mentor, or a coach.


Conclusion


I am authentic and a great storyteller. I convey things in simple and clear language. I am gifted with the ability to provide simple solutions to complex problems. Throughout my life, I emphasized education and learning. When my colleagues emphasized pleasures in the Indian Air Force I focused on education and learning. I am a self-learner and self-taught. I am an autodidact. My life is full of struggles, suffering, and sacrifices.


I am a strategic thinker. I am a proactive person with an attitude of gratitude. I neither had a wealthy parent nor a convent education. I lead a disciplined healthy and spiritual life. I am enthusiastic to learn and grow continuously in my personal, professional, and social life. I am camera-friendly and aim to hit the bull's eye. I want to give back to society despite financial constraints.


I have a fire in my belly. I am a go-getter individual. I stand as a leader in my own frame. I have been empowered with the weapon of knowledge that I have been sharing through my intellectual leadership series and famous books.
