Why is Compassion an Integral Part of Soft Leadership?—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

“Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love." —Lao Tzu.

When we look at soft leaders like Lord Jesus and Buddha, we find them being filled with compassion. They changed the face of the world through their compassion. The soft leader like Mother Teresa helped lepers through her selfless service. She made a lot of difference in the lives of the poor and downtrodden in India. Compassion is an integral characteristic of soft leadership. It helps in connecting with others easily. People appreciate the leaders who care for them and touch them.

Compassion is one of the unheralded characteristics of soft leaders. However, we rarely find leaders with compassion currently. Unfortunately, most of the leaders are busy protecting their personal and professional interests ignoring the interests of others.

Compassion means caring for others by ignoring your own interests. Compassion means keeping the interests of others as paramount by subordinating your personal interests. Compassion is not a weakness. Kahlil Gibran rightly said, "Tenderness and kindness are not signs of weakness and despair but manifestations of strength and resolution." Compassion is all about genuinely caring for your people. It is handholding them without expecting any returns. Compassion commands great inner strength, courage, and power. It is one of the greatest gifts humans receive from God. But how many of us demonstrate and exercise compassion is a million-dollar question.

People often confuse between compassion and sympathy. Both are different indeed! Sympathy is external, feeling sad about others. However, compassion comes from the core of the human heart. It is considered the highest expression of humanness. It is a state of consciousness and distillation of all the virtues.

It is a well-admitted fact that compassion builds loyalty and loyalty builds trust. And soft leaders connect with others through trust. Compassion and empathy make the difference between a leader people want to follow and one they need to follow.

Through compassion soft leaders can maximize their people and organizations. Real leaders are the ones who encourage others to take care of others and who empathize and demonstrate compassion to others. Only such leaders can influence and maximize the potential of their people thus bringing the best out of them. The slogan is when you maximize your people, you maximize your organization. And it is possible only through soft leadership.

A Take-Home Message

"Everybody can be great because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love." —Martin Luther King Jr.

A soft leader needs to have a well-rounded personality. We cannot expect someone to be a good leader without being compassionate with followers. Compassion is a key to ministering to people. Compassion makes a lot of difference in making leaders as soft leaders. Soft leadership flows from the fountain of compassion.

Everyone talks of becoming something big, not of becoming a worthy citizen. Why do society and parents create such a mindset among the people? Why should not we think of becoming worthy citizens, virtuous persons, or helpful persons to society?

Think what Dalai Lama said, "If you want others to be happy, then practice compassion. If you want to be happy, then practice compassion."

Why Commitment is the Key Component of Soft Leadership?—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

“A man who won't die for something is not fit to live.” —Martin Luther King, Jr.

Soft leaders have another great characteristic of commitment, which makes them command respect among others. It is their firm commitment to their cause that wins acclaim from others. Hence, let us briefly look at commitment in this regard.

What is Commitment?

There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when circumstances permit. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results." —Unknown.

Everybody is committed to their family and work. Some people are more committed to their causes and principles. However, commitment is something beyond that. Commitment means persistence with a purpose. Commitment means promising a word and living up to it despite the odds. It creates goodwill and respect. It makes people stand out.

The leaders have to be highly committed whenever they say something as people are always smart to scan leaders from various perspectives. Failing to stand by commitment leads to a credibility crisis and people will not take leaders seriously in the future.

If you want your life to be successful you have to be committed. For instance, when you love your family, you need to be firm in demonstrating your commitment. Commitment consumes your time. But it builds longevity in relations. Not only in your family life, but also at the workplace if you as a leader demonstrate your commitment, people trust you and treat you with respect. It is rightly said, that people don't care how big you are. They only care how committed you are. We find several families breaking due to a lack of commitment. We also find teams getting crashed at the workplace due to the lack of commitment of a few people. Commitment is the bridge between word and deed. A firm commitment to your word and work makes you a successful leader.

Is Commitment Important?

James Womack rightly said, "Commitment unlocks the doors of imagination, allows vision, and gives us the "right stuff" to turn our dreams into reality." Commitment is a must if you want to grow. Commitment is imperative if you want to excel as a leader. Commitment is essential if you want to achieve success in your life. Some people failed several times but achieved success in the later part of their lives because of their commitment and imagination. Anthony Robbins asserts, "The only limit to your impact is your imagination and commitment." If you look at Col Sanders the founder of KFC, he tasted failure several times. He was a disaster academically. He failed in his endeavors. But his commitment to make it big made him a legendary entrepreneur at the age of 61.

Commitment helps you unlock your hidden potential. It takes you to greater heights of glory and success. People respect the leaders who are committed to their ideas and words. People respect the leaders who stand by their words and stick to them despite stiff opposition. People admire the leaders who persist with a purpose.

A Take-Home Message

Unless commitment is made, there are only promises and hopes; but no plans." —Peter F. Drucker.

Leadership and commitment are intertwined. They are the two sides of a coin. A coin is incomplete without having two sides. Similarly, leadership is ineffective without committing. It is rightly said, "If you don't stand for something...you'll fall for anything". Hence, commitment is the key component of soft leadership.

How Do Students Learn From Their Failures?—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—The Father of “Soft Leadership” & International Leadership Guru: “I was not blessed with a luxurious childhood. Besides, I was born into a toxic family and grew up in a toxic environment. My life is full of struggles and suffering. I have mental, physical, and financial challenges. I don’t get any pension and regular income.”

I did not choose where I was born but decided to be positive and grow as a leader.” ―Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D., The Father of Soft Leadership

Can you have an omelet without breaking the eggs? Can you have success without facing failures? Of course, not. People treat failure as an unfortunate stigma. Human learns many things from several failures and ultimately evolves as a successful person. It is basically because; man treats every failure as a learning opportunity for his progress and prosperity.

Students usually live in their reel life as long as they are in educational institutions. They will understand real life only when they enter into employment. There are certain things students should learn while in the educational institution itself as it helps them to face the challenges at the workplace squarely.

They should learn to prepare a resume about their failures. They should first list out number of failures they encountered in their lives and should write down how they overcame failures. Did they fail in different areas? Did they fail due to their own mistakes or due to the forces arising out of the external environment? The process helps in analyzing the reasons for failures and taking corrective steps. It enhances their thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills. In addition, it helps them in learning certain lessons in their lives. They can fail differently but not at the same thing several times. It makes them think more realistically and practically. The takeaways from their failures will help them face the real challenges in the corporate world with more confidence and courage.

Remember the fact that everyone has their share of failures. If there are no failures in life, it indicates that people did not risk anything in their lives. Not to have taken a risk is also a risk. Students should learn to risk and try whatever is possible as they are young and energetic. They can rise even if they fail as they are filled with energy and enthusiasm.

Always remember one thing in life there are no problems but only opportunities. Every problem offers some prospects in disguise. Students should be able to spot and tap for their advantage.

Life is not a cakewalk. It is a circus with highs and lows. Students should not get elated with success and should not get dejected when faced with failures. They must be in a position to take the challenges in their stride.

To sum up, as exercise is to your body, problems are to your mind and failures are to your success.

Become an Icon of the Future—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

“See the light in you. Your life is in your hands. Enjoy every moment by looking at the positive aspects. Build a new foundation with the bricks thrown at you. Turn your scars into stars. Life is great." ―Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.

Research shows that people waste 30 percent of their precious time thinking about their past. They waste their precious time by thinking about their unpleasant past and live with emotional baggage. The fact of life is that the past cannot be changed and the future cannot be predicted. Therefore, wisdom lies in living in the present without brooding over the unpleasant past.

How to Live in the Present?

"If your mind carries a heavy burden of the past, you will experience more of the same. The past perpetuates itself through a lack of presence. The quality of your consciousness at this moment is what shapes the future." ―Eckhart Tolle

Everyone undergoes pain in life. Most individuals are afraid of unveiling it to avoid ridicule and criticism. Nobody's life is perfect. We are living with imperfect people in an imperfect world. Instead of trying to perfect people and the world, let us strive to make people and the world better with our contributions. Here are some tips to live in the present. Learn to live with realities. Count your blessings, not brickbats. Accept your past mistakes to come out of emotional baggage. Take feedback from past unpleasant experiences to lead your life mindfully. Learn lessons. Take appropriate precautions to avoid repeating the same mistakes. Thank the toxic people for giving you challenges because they helped you unlock your hidden potential and overcome challenges successfully. Forgive them for letting you down and betraying you. Hate is heavy. Let it go. Overcome the ‘victim mindset’. Remember that life is not fair. Set goals and focus on them to move forward. Be positive and optimistic. Associate with positive people. Detach from negative people and attach to positive people to lead your life mindfully. Be grateful for what you have. Write a gratitude journal.

I made peace with my alcoholic father’s litigations, whining mother's negativity, and fraudulent siblings’ betrayals. I made peace with my father-in-law’s betrayal and brother-in-law’s backstabbing. I am happy because I have forgiven them and moved on with life lessons. I focus on sharing my knowledge freely with the world and making a difference in their lives. I invest my time, energy, and effort in contributing my best to the world within my capacities and abilities.

Become the Best Version of Yourself

"Some of us think holding on makes us strong, but sometimes it is letting go." ―Herman Hesse

Don’t waste your precious time digging into your past. Forget the unpleasant past and move on. Currently, relationships start with an expiry date, unlike in the past when the relationships emphasized longevity. Don't become a prisoner of the past. Become an icon of the future. Don't let outer people dictate your inner world. Don't let negative people enter your mind and drag you emotionally. Everything happens for a reason. Don't see the unpleasant dark. Instead, see the pleasant light. Focus on building your future. Become the best version of yourself.

Lead Your Life Mindfully

"Make peace with your past so it won't destroy your present." ―Paulo Coelho

Everybody wants to lead a cozy and rosy life which is not possible. Life is incomplete without struggle and suffering because they provide meaning to life. To summarize, it doesn't make any sense to live in the unpleasant past. Life is not a straight line. Accept the realities of life, let go of the past, and move on with valuable takeaways. Be mindful to lead your life meaningfully. Life is great!

We must be willing to let go of the life we've planned, to have the life that is waiting for us." ―Joseph Campbell.

Meeting Etiquette Rules—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

Companies conduct meetings regularly. There is etiquette to be followed during meetings for both the chairperson and the participants. It is essential to be clear about the agenda before conducting the meeting. The agenda is all about a list of items to be discussed at the meeting. Here are the few things both the chair and members must follow for a successful meeting.

Meeting Etiquette

  • Inform all the participants about the date, time venue, and purpose of the meeting to enable them to come well-prepared.

  • Prepare well in advance about the topics to be discussed. Get all facts and figures and outline them in bullet points.

  • Be punctual and follow the mannerisms during the meeting.

  • Follow the established seating pattern. When in doubt ask and follow, but don’t sit in someone’s place.

  • Maintain proper dress code.

  • Keep your cell phone in silent mode to avoid distraction.

  • Keep a scribbling pad ready to take notes or ask your secretary to jot down the minutes of the meeting. Minutes is a record of the decisions taken at a formal meeting.

  • Listen carefully for effective outcomes.

  • Don't talk with other members during meetings.

  • Avoid involving in arguments. Stick to the agenda and discuss. If there is any sensitive information, discuss it privately.

  • Don’t discuss unrelated issues. Such things can be discussed later.

  • Respect the chair and avoid doing other tasks.

  • Don’t leave the meeting in the middle unless absolutely necessary.

  • Avoid personal criticism.

  • Avoid stretching the meeting. Stick to the schedule as participants have other commitments.

After completion of the meeting, take the minutes of the meeting and follow up the same for further action. Remember thorough preparation and etiquette are the key to ensuring a successful meeting.

Summarizing Skills—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

"Never use a sentence when you can use a phrase, or a phrase when you can use a word." - Berkeley

These days, people don't have time to read lengthy statements. They look for well-punched information hitting the bulls' eye as it saves not only time but also energy and precious resources. Summarizing skills helps immensely achieve this objective.

What is Summarizing Skill?

Summarizing is all about condensing the entire content into a smaller one without losing the essence of the message. It is a skill where people need to focus on what is required rather than what is not required and what is to be focused rather than what is not to be focused. Summarizing is called in different names globally. Some call it précis writing where people write one-third of the given content without losing focus from the message during examinations. This skill is essential for everybody, especially for executives reaching higher positions. Summarizing helps you test your understanding and expressing abilities. It helps in avoiding redundant words. Here are few examples where you can shorten your words

Close proximity – proximity

End result – result

Enclosed herewith – enclosed

In spite of the fact that – although

Revert back – revert

Summarize briefly – summarize

Repeat again – repeat

Summarizing sounds like paraphrasing. Paraphrasing helps in summarizing the content. Paraphrasing is the conversion of information from sender to receiver through various illustrations and anecdotes. In contrast, summarizing is condensing the content without losing the essence of the message. Therefore, both summarizing and paraphrasing are different. Here are the tips to condense your content:

Tips to write Summary

  • Note down the key points or underline them.

  • Rank them on priority.

  • Present them in simple and straight sentences.

  • Avoid giving examples and anecdotes.

  • Put preferably in phrases.

Summarizing is a skill that anyone can cultivate. To hone this skill, you must read quality blogs and articles of Time, Harvard Business Review, Forbes, The Economist, Sloan Management Review, and Fast Company to name a few. With quality reading and thorough practice, you will not only differentiate between chalk and cheese but also develop writing skills that shape you as a successful professional.
