“Paris Climate Change Conference - Ethical Call to Address Climate Change - November 2015” ―Professor M.S.Rao










The twenty-first session of the Conference of the Parties (COP) and the eleventh session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP) will take place from 30 November to 11 December 2015, in Paris, France. It addresses on climate change. I take it as an opportunity to share a few thoughts on this topic.


Climate Change – A Major Global Challenge

Containing the climate change is a major challenge for countries globally. This challenge arose due to the ignorance and negligence by people. It requires holistic approach from all stakeholders including government, people and global bodies to decrease global warming. Government alone cannot address the climate change. People must be educated about the challenges involved in climate change. They must be taught about the techniques to cut down carbon.


Tools and Techniques to Address the Challenge

Here are some ways to address this challenge: Be energy efficient. Choose renewable power. Cut down waste. Prefer vegetarian food.  Minimize the usage of automobiles. Use cycle, if possible, to keep good health.  Eat organic food. Remember the slogan ‘let polluters pay’. Bring awareness among the people. To conclude, keep people, planet and profit as the criteria to ensure ecology.

“Trust Comes from Transparency, not Titles” ―Professor M.S.Rao













“No ruler can establish himself without trust from the people.” — Confucius


Some leaders often think that they can build trust in others easily since they have titles. But the fact is that trust comes from transparency, not from titles. Additionally, leaders cannot earn respect due to their positional power. However, they can earn respect due to their referent power. Positional power is offered by organizations to accomplish organizational goals and objectives whereas the referent power is earned by leaders through trust and transparency. That means leaders must earn trust and be transparent to enjoy referent power to achieve organizational objectives effectively.  We will explore trust, transparency and titles in this article. 


Emphasize Referent Power, not Positional Power

“A lack of transparency results in distrust and a deep sense of insecurity.” — Dalai Lama

There are many leaders who lost their image and respect when they resigned their positions or lost their titles. However, there are leaders who succeeded even after quitting their positions and titles because they cared for people, not their titles when they were in office.  When you look at Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela and Dalai Lama, they never craved for their titles. In contrast, they cared for their people, walked their talk and led by example to build trust in others. These leaders are above their titles. Similarly, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam who is known as a people’s president was a great scientist and humanist. After quitting the office as president of India, he earned more respect due to his dedication to country and the difference he made in Indian people and students.


Changing Global Mindset

Globally there is a drastic change in the mindset of the people. Previously consumers and clients emphasized more on quality products and services. However, presently they emphasize more on transparency and ethical practices by organizations because only when the organizations are ethical, they will be able to offer quality goods and services to their customers and clients.

It is a myth to believe that being transparent will be viewed as less authoritative. The fact is that people aspire to relate with their leaders who have undergone similar trials and tribulations and peaks and valleys. People are intelligent to identify who are fake and trustworthy leaders.  Remember, people always respect transparent leaders in the long run.


Conclusion

It is rightly remarked, “Respect is earned, Honesty is appreciated, Trust is gained, Loyalty is returned.”  When leaders lack commitment, they lose trust and confidence from others resulting in losing respect from people. When leaders are not transparent in their words and deeds, they lose their respect. They also lose their titles along with respect. Hence, be transparent to build trust in others to earn respect to grow as a great leader.

“Does God Throw Challenges to Intelligent People, not to Ordinary People?” ―Professor M.S.Rao

God tries and tests the intelligent people more than the ordinary people because He knows that intelligent people can handle challenges effectively and come out with flying colors while the ordinary people cannot handle them.  

Most people think that they alone have challenges in their lives which is a myth. They often brood about problems without exploring solutions. The fact is that all people have problems because problems are an integral part of life. In fact, life is incomplete without problems.  

God throws more challenges to intelligent people as He knows that they can handle them successfully. Additionally, He wants to unlock their hidden potential and make them tougher. God doesn’t throw challenges to ordinary people as they cannot overcome them successfully. Hence, He provides an easy path to walk for the average and below average people so that they can lead a normal and pleasant life without many hassles.

Why God throws more challenges to intelligent people is to groom them as leaders. When intelligent people are thrown with challenges, they accept the challenges and explore alternatives to come out of them. During the course of problem-solving, they broaden their minds and visions to evolve as better leaders. Additionally, troubles convert them into tough leaders. Whenever challenges are thrown at them, they look for ideas to overcome issues. In this way, they find their way to lead and show the way for others to lead. They grow as great leaders finally.

Stephen R. Covey once remarked, “Opposition is a natural part of life. Just as we develop our physical muscles through overcoming opposition – such as lifting weights – we develop our character muscles by overcoming challenges and adversity.”  Whenever you are thrown with challenges, don’t get upset. Accept them and explore multiple ideas to resolve them. Don’t look where you slipped but look how you slipped. Analyze the reasons and explore the options to address the challenges. It is rightly said that below average individuals talk about individuals, average individuals talk about issues and above average individuals talk about ideas. Therefore, always talk about ideas to grow as a great leader.
