When you look at the ranking of Indian
universities globally, we stand nowhere near to the top 100 universities. There
are a number of reasons for not listing Indian universities at the top level.
Let us address some of the reasons for this present scenario. We don’t have quality infrastructure. There
are no adequate research facilities. In India, teaching means only classroom
teaching as it doesn’t include research and consultancy which are indeed the
pillars of teaching. The best talent
doesn’t join teaching profession due to lack of career opportunities, ambience
and facilities. The present Indian education system doesn’t believe in
creativity and innovation. It believes more in 3 Rs – read, write and reproduce
which encourages memory. Students cram content and reproduce during exams
without understanding the essence.
The private educational institutions collect
a huge fee from students like leeches and believe more brand building than
providing quality education to students. The regulating bodies including All
India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) are not equipped with adequate
powers to check irregularities and corruption in private colleges especially
medical and engineering institutions. Some of the private medical and
engineering colleges don’t provide the salary to their employees when the
latter leave the educational institutions.
Worse, the teachers are not paid salary for a period of three months
when they leave these private educational institutions. The managements of
these private medical and engineering colleges file fictitious cases and fire
them. Here are some steps to check
irregularities and corruption to ensure conducive academic ambience in private
educational institutions in India:
- Close down unethical private educational institutions that don’t comply with the guidelines and violate the rules and regulations.
- Conduct sudden inspections to find out whether faculty is working physically in the colleges.
- Update and upgrade teaching pedagogy regularly.
- Make the selection process of faculty stringent.
- Offer pay and perks to the faculty as per the industry standards.
- Encourage students who are seriously interested in acquiring education.
- Strengthen of the hands of AICTE and other regulating bodies. Ensure that they are well protected. Also keep them free from corruption.
- Ensure funding by government to the professionally run educational institutions.
It is time to professionalize Indian
education system to impart quality education to students and add sanctity to
educators. Then, we can think of topping globally.
