Leadership Lessons from Subramania Bharati: Reform, Perform and Transform—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

"Let the sky fall, when it crumbles, we will stand tall and face it all together." —Subramanya Bharathiyar

அச்சமில்லை அச்சமில்லை அச்சமென்பதில்லையே

துச்சமாக எண்ணி நம்மைத் தூறு செய்த போதினும்

Several leaders changed the face of India with their courage, creativity, and contribution. The list is endless. In this post, I will discuss Subramanya Bharathiyar, his creative leadership, and the lessons we must learn from his leadership.

Subramanya Bharathiyar (Dec. 11, 1882—Sept. 11, 1921)

Live in the present and shape the future, do not cast lingering looks to the distant past for the past has passed away, never again to return." —Subramanya Bharathi

Subramanya Bharati was a great poet, patriot, nationalist, freedom fighter, and social reformer. He was also known as "Mahakavi Bharati." He is considered the father of the modern Tamil style. He was born in Thoothukudi and lived in Triplicane, Chennai. He lived in Varanasi, where he had a Sikh friend. He loved Sikhs and wore a turban and a beard like a Sikh. He was associated with Mahatma Gandhi during India's freedom struggle. He moved to Puducherry during the freedom struggle and lived there for 10 years. Puducherry is a land of creativity and cultural prosperity where he translated the Bhagavad Gita into Tamil. He died poor in pocket but rich in heart.

Leadership Lessons—Reform, Perform, and Transform

"World will prosper in knowledge and intellect if both men and women are deemed equal." —Subramanya Bharathi

There are several lessons you must learn from Bharathiyar’s creative leadership. Here are some of them.

  • Walk your talk.

  • Be fearless. Do what is just and right.

  • Don’t compromise with your principles and philosophies.

  • Advocate for women's empowerment.

  • Be rich in ideas despite being poor economically.

  • When the going gets tough, tough gets going.

  • Emphasize knowledge, not wealth.

Conclusion

He who writes poetry is not a poet. He whose poetry has become his life, and who has made his life his poetry—it is he who is a poet.” —Subramanya Bharathi

Bharathiyar contributed immensely to poetry and India's freedom struggle. As a mark of respect for his contribution, Bharathiar University was named after him in Coimbatore in 1982; the road was named after him in New Delhi; award was instituted after him by the Ministry of Human Resources; and statues erected in various places including Indian Parliament, Marina Beach, Chennai, and Puducherry.

You are gifted with one life, and you must deliver your goods with excellence without craving for any attention and seeking approval from others to provide meaning to your life.

Subramanya Bharati remains an inspiration for all Indians, especially for Tamilians. He will be remembered forever in Indian history for his courageous and creative leadership. Jai Hind.

He who forgets not God and fails not in his duty, no matter whatever befalls him and however much he suffers, will at the end attain honor and happiness." —Subramanya Bharathi
