“There is no witness so terrible and no accuser so powerful as conscience which dwells within us.” ―Sophocles
Conscience is one of the major key components of soft leaders, as a clear conscience makes them stand out from other leaders. People expect leaders to be ethical and responsible. They also look up to leaders whose conscience cares for them. We shall briefly look at the conscience and conscience leadership in this regard.
The term conscience has been derived from Latin. It means 'privity of knowledge' or 'with knowledge'. It is the internal moral yardstick, unlike external, where society or law decides and regulates the moral standards. It is the key factor that either makes or breaks the person. Conscience clearly tells what is right and wrong. It clearly tells what is good and bad. Conscience is something related to morality and ethics. H. L. Mencken rightly said, "Conscience is the inner voice that warns us that someone might be looking."
If man acts according to his conscience, most of the problems and evils will go away in this world. However, he doesn't act because of his selfish motives or vested interest,s struggle for existence, or an easy way to reach the top. Although man tries to cheat his conscience and raises the ending will be disastrous.
Conscience Leadership
”Good friends, good books, and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life." ―Mark Twain
Conscience differentiates right from wrong. Leaders must have a clear conscience to convince themselves so that they can persuade their followers. If there is a chasm between word and deed, conscience remains the same. Mahatma Gandhi was always clear with his conscience. He openly admitted the mistakes he made in his life in his autobiography. Every person makes mistakes, but how many unveil and openly admit the same? It requires a lot of courage to reveal wrongdoings.
Several leaders resigned because of their conscience. They left their high positions due to the call from their conscience. Hence, conscience is powerful. One has to convince his conscience first to convince others. As charity begins at home, the decisions and leadership start from the conscience. Aung San Suu Kyi underwent several trials and tribulations from military rulers, as her conscience did not allow her to leave her country. Mahatma Gandhi led Civil disobedience, which was a non-violent protest against the British. It was an act of conscience.
Leaders who have concern for their conscience tend to excel as great leaders, as excessive focus on conscience makes them more responsible and accountable. As leadership is all about taking responsibility, the conscience keeps taking responsibility to add value for themselves and to make a difference in the lives of others.
Leaders who are prone to guilt become good leaders as they empathize with others. The more you are empathetic, the more you excel as a good leader. As their conscience is clearer, the leaders with guilt tend to excel as great leaders.
A Take-Home Message
“Justice is a temporary thing that must at last come to an end; but the conscience is eternal and will never die.” ―Martin Luther King
Several problems and evils in society are the result of people compromising their conscience. People may cheat others, but not their conscience. Conscience is always clear, and it is powerful. People have to be accountable to their conscience. People may do several wrong things for their survival or for their selfish motives. Ultimately, they need to persuade their conscience, which is always clear. It is a reminder for every human being. Therefore, don't compromise with your conscience, as compromising with a conscience is equal to the death of a person morally.
