Are You a Left-Brainer or a Right-Brainer?—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

“Your incredible brain can take you from rags to riches, from loneliness to popularity, and from depression to happiness and joy — if you use it properly.” —Brian Tracy

If you want to achieve success smartly and quickly, being aware of your strengths and weaknesses helps you reap rewards greatly. When you identify your strengths, you will be able to exploit them to achieve your desired objectives. When you know your weaknesses, you can correct yourself quickly whenever you make mistakes, and you can also gradually overcome them through practice. In addition, if you are aware of yourself, whether you are a left-brainer or right-brainer, you can make use of your strengths and grow quickly in all spheres of your life.

According to Nobel Laureate, Roger W. Sperry, the human brain is divided into two compartments (hemispheres) – left-brain and right-brain. Some people use more of the left brain, some use more of the right brain, and a few use the whole brain. The human mind is very powerful. If you know about yourself whether you are a left-brainer or right-brainer, you can make use of your mind, and be able to unlock your hidden potential to achieve huge success in your life.

Research shows that those who are "right-brained" are said to be more intuitive, thoughtful, and subjective, while those who are "left-brained" are often said to be more logical, analytical, and objective. The left-brainers are more logical and have an eye for detail. They can become good writers and researchers. They are also good at language. Hence, they can also become good speakers. Precisely, they are down-to-earth. In contrast, the right-brainers are highly imaginative and creative and can thrive on risk. Succinctly, they appreciate spatial perception and can see the big picture. They can think out of the box and become scientists and excel as inventors.

Left-brainers are logical, rational, and sequential, and prefer to work alone in a quiet place, while right-brainers are intuitive and prefer to work in teams. The left-brainers are systematic and well-structured people and possess more technical acumen. They appreciate everything that is well organized. They don't like distractions. In contrast, the right-brainers have social acumen. The left-brainer may become a right-brainer or vice versa, as per the changing times and their age, and experiences.

Choose Your Career

The left-brainers can opt for careers that have less interaction with others and can work alone, such as a clerk, librarian, accountant, advisor, engineer, banker, counselor, and programmer, to name a few. The right-brainers can opt for careers that have more interaction and can involve group activities, such as director, designer, instructor, consultant, trainer, and psychologist. The left-brainers prefer to work indoors and appreciate using more of their mental energies and less of their physical energies, while the right-brainers prefer to work outdoors using more of their physical energies and less of their mental energies. The left-brainers prefer to work in serene places while the right-brainers prefer to work in a noisy environment.

It is good if you use both sides of your brain to uncover your hidden potential. Realizing your brain type helps you identify your strengths and gradually make a shift to use your brain holistically to achieve all-round success in your life.

You can take online tests to know whether you are a left-brainer or a right-brainer. Here is another way to find out whether you are a left-brainer or a right-brainer: When you watch a dancer if you see in the clockwise direction, then you use more of the right-brain. In contrast, if you see the dancer in the anti-clockwise direction, then you use more of the left brain. Next time, when you watch dancing, observe yourself keenly as you not only enjoy dancing but also analyze yourself whether you are a left-brainer or a right-brainer.

Right or Left-Brainer Test

Here is a test to know whether you are a left-brainer or a right-brainer. Answer these questions to find out the same:

  1. Which hand do you write with normally?

  2. Which hand do you eat?

  3. Take a step. Which foot did you use?

  4. Which hand do you use when brushing your teeth?

  5. Which hand do you open a cola bottle with?

If you answered left to these questions, you are normally right-brained. If you answered correctly to most questions, you are usually left-brained. If it’s a mixed result, you could be more whole-brained.

How to Write a Vision Statement—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

"Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare." —Japanese proverb

Vision is all about seeing the invisible through imagination. However, the mission is all about executing the activities. Vision indicates where one wants to go, and mission directs how one can go. Visionaries always look for what is possible by discovering the potential, and missionaries achieve it through the right planning and execution. The visionaries are directors, and the missionaries are actors.

Vision enhances organizational excellence and effectiveness. It enhances the commitment of employees towards the organization. It helps employees move in a specific direction in which the organization intends to move.

A vision statement is the highest order of goals that takes the organization to the tipping point. It is for the long term that can transform the organization and keep it different from others. In contrast, the mission statement is different from the vision as it may change from time to time as the strategies to reach organizational goals and objectives change from time to time.

A vision statement serves as a catalyst. It plays a pivotal for the success of any organization. It should be clear, crisp, simple, straight, and above all, jargon-free. It must energize employees to contribute their best. They must be able to take pride in and be proud of the organization. There are no fixed rules and regulations, and no fixed formula for crafting a better vision statement.

Jack Welch wanted GE to be either number 1 or number 2. That was the vision he set out for his employees. Employees worked accordingly, delivered their best, and led the GE to greater heights.

The idea of the vision statement is to ensure that all employees have one visual image of the organization, connecting everyone emotionally, ethically, and energetically. Besides, it must transform with changing times and technologies. However, the core content must remain the same, and it should not be diluted because the company has been founded on fundamental ideas and ideals.

The vision statement must preferably be below 100 words and in the present tense to be effective. It requires an imaginative mind to craft one. We shall look at a few tools to craft a better vision statement.

  • Vision must spell out a clear and compelling picture so that there is a strong reason to pursue and persevere. It must be audacious and SMART, which is the acronym for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound.

  • It should be simple and straight and challenging and inspiring.

  • It must convey the company's value system, culture, ethics, and etiquette. It should never be mere rhetoric but must be a realistic one.

  • It must be challenging enough so that people can put in their energies and efforts aggressively.

  • It must neither be too short nor too big. It must convey the ideals and ideas of the organization for which it stands and aspires to achieve.

  • Avoid jargon and buzzwords as they ensure better clarity.

When the vision statement is made to compete with another firm, the company must revise its vision once it is successful. Besides, if the company reaches the target of magical numbers, then it has to revise its vision statement.

Vision helps us to get prepared today for tomorrow. It is like goal setting. As individuals set their goals, organizations also set their goals. It is like where they want to go. And the mission serves as a roadmap to reach their vision. Succinctly mission spells out how they accomplish their vision.

Vision is closely connected with leadership. Legendary business leader Jack Welch successfully articulated his vision and took GE to the tipping point through his visionary leadership. To put it in the words of Peter F. Drucker, "Leadership is lifting a person's vision to higher sights, the raising of a person's performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations."

To conclude, there should not be any gap between preaching and practicing to make the vision meaningful and realistic. Companies must mobilize their people around a common cause by crafting better vision statements. The success of any company depends on the right presentation of a vision statement and execution of the mission statement.

Do You Compromise With Your Conscience?—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

“There is no witness so terrible and no accuser so powerful as conscience which dwells within us.” ―Sophocles

Conscience is one of the major key components of soft leaders, as a clear conscience makes them stand out from other leaders. People expect leaders to be ethical and responsible. They also look up to leaders whose conscience cares for them. We shall briefly look at the conscience and conscience leadership in this regard.

The term conscience has been derived from Latin. It means 'privity of knowledge' or 'with knowledge'. It is the internal moral yardstick, unlike external, where society or law decides and regulates the moral standards. It is the key factor that either makes or breaks the person. Conscience clearly tells what is right and wrong. It clearly tells what is good and bad. Conscience is something related to morality and ethics. H. L. Mencken rightly said, "Conscience is the inner voice that warns us that someone might be looking."

If man acts according to his conscience, most of the problems and evils will go away in this world. However, he doesn't act because of his selfish motives or vested interest,s struggle for existence, or an easy way to reach the top. Although man tries to cheat his conscience and raises the ending will be disastrous.

Conscience Leadership

Good friends, good books, and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life." ―Mark Twain

Conscience differentiates right from wrong. Leaders must have a clear conscience to convince themselves so that they can persuade their followers. If there is a chasm between word and deed, conscience remains the same. Mahatma Gandhi was always clear with his conscience. He openly admitted the mistakes he made in his life in his autobiography. Every person makes mistakes, but how many unveil and openly admit the same? It requires a lot of courage to reveal wrongdoings.

Several leaders resigned because of their conscience. They left their high positions due to the call from their conscience. Hence, conscience is powerful. One has to convince his conscience first to convince others. As charity begins at home, the decisions and leadership start from the conscience. Aung San Suu Kyi underwent several trials and tribulations from military rulers, as her conscience did not allow her to leave her country. Mahatma Gandhi led Civil disobedience, which was a non-violent protest against the British. It was an act of conscience.

Leaders who have concern for their conscience tend to excel as great leaders, as excessive focus on conscience makes them more responsible and accountable. As leadership is all about taking responsibility, the conscience keeps taking responsibility to add value for themselves and to make a difference in the lives of others.

Leaders who are prone to guilt become good leaders as they empathize with others. The more you are empathetic, the more you excel as a good leader. As their conscience is clearer, the leaders with guilt tend to excel as great leaders.

A Take-Home Message

Justice is a temporary thing that must at last come to an end; but the conscience is eternal and will never die.” ―Martin Luther King

Several problems and evils in society are the result of people compromising their conscience. People may cheat others, but not their conscience. Conscience is always clear, and it is powerful. People have to be accountable to their conscience. People may do several wrong things for their survival or for their selfish motives. Ultimately, they need to persuade their conscience, which is always clear. It is a reminder for every human being. Therefore, don't compromise with your conscience, as compromising with a conscience is equal to the death of a person morally.

How to Build Resilient Communities Globally?—Professor M.S. Rao, Ph.D.—21st-Century Philosopher & The Father of “Soft Leadership”

Life is like a game where you seek to overcome the obstacles that stand in the way of achieving your goals. You get better at this game through practice. The game consists of a series of choices that have consequences. You can’t stop the problems and choices from coming at you, so it’s better to learn how to deal with them.” —Ray Dalio

Communities must rise to the occasion during disasters and catastrophes. They must be resilient to overcome the challenges arising from nature, external distractions, and disturbances. In this regard, we will discuss building resilient communities globally to bounce back and bounce forward aggressively.

Resilience is the ability of individuals, organizations, and communities to bounce back, survive, and succeed when the shocks and stresses are stacked against them. There are several definitions of resilience in different contexts. Elizabeth Edwards defines “Resilience is accepting your new reality, even if it's less good than the one you had before. You can fight it, you can do nothing but scream about what you've lost, or you can accept that and try to put together something that's good.” Resilience is a top priority for global organizations that serve humanitarian action and development.

A Blueprint to Build Resilient Communities Globally

The rapid growth in technology, the growing global economy, and urbanization have aggravated the risk for communities and nations globally. The communities must learn how to cope with shocks and stresses arising from artificial intelligence and the fourth industrial revolution. They must be equipped with innovative tools and techniques to enable them to persist, recover, or even thrive amid disruption. Here is a blueprint to build resilient communities globally:

  • Accept the fact that disasters cannot be averted. Hence, have the right attitude and develop a positive mindset to be prepared for disasters.

  • Admit that risk is an integral part of life. So, be prepared for it.

  • Be transparent to build trust because trusting relationships between members of a community increase resilience.

  • Involve the community members and stakeholders actively. They must set their differences aside in the interest of the common good.

  • Harness the power of networks for shared discovery and collaboration.

  • Identify community assets and keep them ready mentally.

  • Make decisions with your head, heart, and gut, keeping the larger interests of your community. Remember, it is more important to save lives than assets during disasters.

  • Keep people before the profit.

  • Value relationships. Next to God is your neighbor. Treat your community as a family. Come forward to protect if any one of them is in trouble to build strong community leadership.

  • Leverage technology that has created several opportunities for humankind. It is a fact that technology has become a powerful tool to build social resilience.

The resilient systems must be a blend of both micro and macro structures to embrace change and adapt aggressively. In a nutshell, to build resilient communities globally, you must be agile and active; analyze and understand the risk; connect and communicate with your community; inspire and engage them; be proactive and synergize them; take action to keep the larger interests of your community; take feedback, and learn lessons to be prepared better for such disasters in future.

Build Resilient Communities

The disasters may arise due to climate change, global warming, rising sea levels, melting glaciers, increasing water salinity, tsunami-like situations, or cyberattacks by black hats. Given the current complexities and technological inventions, it is essential to prepare every global citizen to be resilient to overcome the eventualities. Remember, if the communities are resilient, the risk decreases.

In this era of a disruptive world, it is essential to focus on what matters most; shed what is irrelevant and useless, and communicate with stakeholders effectively to build a resilient world. To summarize, communities must adapt to changing circumstances. Resilient communities see and seize the opportunities in the eye of the storm. A more resilient world is possible and feasible if we work together toward it. To conclude, building resilient communities requires coordinated efforts from all stakeholders and shared responsibilities at local, national, and global levels; and from local communities, government, nonprofits, intellectuals, thought leaders, and global leaders.
