Dear friends,

Here is the free chapter of my upcoming book tentatively titled, “Sharing Leadership Ideas and Insights: Moments and Memories on Indian Educational Institutions through Storytelling.” Frank Sonnenberg wrote foreword for this book. You may share your thoughts about this book on social media channels including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+.

Dream to Build One Million Students as Global Leaders by 2030

“What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.” — Albert Pike

Welcome to Sharing Leadership Ideas and Insights: Moments and Memories on Indian Educational Institutions through Storytelling. I am passionate about students and sharing my knowledge with them. I served as a professor in various Indian educational institutions with several memories and moments. In this book, I share leadership ideas and insights and my sweet and bitter experiences with various educational institutions. Currently there are innumerable challenges for students, educators, parents, managements and regulating bodies including AICTE. This book is an endeavor to highlight the challenges from all stakeholders to address them earnestly to build a strong Indian education system and a healthy society.

Vision 2030: One Million Global Leaders

“Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so shall you become. Your vision is the promise of what you shall one day be. Your ideal is the prophecy of what you shall at last unveil.” — James Allen

I have a dream that I will build one million students as global leaders by 2030. I am confident that I will make it happen.

Globally there is a looming leadership crisis due to the retirement of Baby boomers. Gen Y is not ready to undertake leadership roles and responsibilities since they are not equipped with leadership skills and abilities. Due to the sudden exit of Baby boomers, organizations will suffer due to dearth of experienced leadership talent. Therefore, I created a vision to build one million students as global leaders by 2030. Since I belong to Gen X, I consider it an opportunity to bridge the gap between the Baby boomers and Gen Y. I am passionate about leadership and teaching profession. Additionally, I am passionate about students. I have diversified areas of experience including defence, industry, teaching, training and consultancy. Hence, I decided to blend my diversified experiences with my passionate area of leadership to build global leaders. Some of my students express their reservations about my vision. I inform that I am only 53 years old with very high energy levels with a passion to make a difference to the world.  Additionally, I make use of social media to reach out to students globally.

To achieve anything in life, dream is imperative.  I have a dream that I will be able to build one million students as global leaders by 2030. It is possible as age is my favor and I have already trained 35000 students so far, and I can easily accomplish my dream to build the balance global leaders by 2030.  I also started building team of students to work with me through online to accomplish my vision. Leaders are dreamers; they craft their vision and work hard relentlessly to accomplish their vision. Remember, everything is possible if there is passion, vision, commitment, and persistence.

“One person can make a difference. In fact, it's not only possible for one person to make a difference, it's essential that one person makes a difference. And believe it or not, that person is you.” — Bob Riley

My Personal Vision Statement
My vision is to build one million students as global leaders.
My vision is to help students unleash their hidden potential.
My vision is to help students succeed in every area of their lives, and to accomplish their dreams.
My vision is to help unsuccessful students become successful students.
My vision is to help successful students become even more successful students.
My vision is to inspire students to dream big and achieve big.
My vision is to pioneer for global peace, prosperity, stability and security.

“Duryonodhan’s Underwater Meditation in Mahabharat Epic” ―Professor M.S.Rao

“Most people think that aging is irreversible and we know that there are mechanisms even in the human machinery that allow for the reversal of aging, through correction of diet, through anti-oxidants, through removal of toxins from the body, through exercise, through yoga and breathing techniques, and through meditation.” ― Deepak Chopra

Success is the outcome of learnable behaviors and habits. Successful people identify and adopt certain habits and behaviors to achieve greatness in their life.

Successful people are not born with unique habits. They are born like any other ordinary people but cultivated a few habits during the course of life and practiced to achieve greatness. They relentlessly followed those habits resulting in amazing success. They were unmindful of temporary setbacks since they had a long-term vision to accomplish their goals. Research shows that meditation alleviates anxiety, pain and prevents depression.  It eliminates distractions and enhances your focus to accomplish your goals.

Merits of Meditation

When you confront challenges daily, your mind becomes a big mess. Hence, it is advisable to do meditation daily. Meditation cleans the cobwebs in your mind. It connects your mind, body, and soul. It connects your inner world with outside world easily. It eliminates stress and anxiety to ensure inner peace. It helps you understand realities in your life. It makes you realistic and humble. It helps you empathize with others and eliminates conflicts.

Perform Underwater Meditation

In the Mahabharat epic, Duryodhan performed underwater meditation to keep his mind calm and composed. He had the ability to stay for long time under the water without breathing. Some people interpreted it as an act of cowardice to hide below the water when he almost lost his Kurukshetra war against Pandavas. But the fact is that when you remain underwater for some time, your mind becomes cool and composed. You get peace and tranquility. You reflect a lot and get energized to encounter your challenges with confidence and mettle. You also build inner power, and you are in a position to unlock your hidden potential.

Conclusion

We have seen several leaders and CEOs adopting this technique in this form or other form to remain cool, calm, composed and charismatic. It helped them work under pressure without losing their focus and delivering their best. Most leaders take break once in a week to keep their minds free from organizational pulls and pressures. We have also seen employees taking a sabbatical to follow their passionate areas or to work for nonprofits. It provides them break from routine chores and gives them sense of satisfaction that they made a difference to the society. It energizes them and organizes their minds. Hence, adopt this unique technique of performing underwater meditation to unleash the leader in you.

“Thoughts lead on to purposes; purposes go forth in action; actions form habits; habits decide character; and character fixes our destiny.” ― Tryon Edwards

Free Chapter ― Professor M.S.Rao’s Award-Winning Book “Spark: The Power to Become Big is Within You!”

Dear friends,

Here is the free chapter of my award-winning book “Spark: The Power to Become Big is Within You!” You may share your thoughts about this book on social media channels including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+.

“Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it and I shall move the world.” — Archimedes

Welcome to Spark: The Power to Become Big is Within You! Basically, I author books on executive education, coaching, and leadership. But this book on self-help is to help you find out what makes people succeed. During many years of experience as an educator, trainer, speaker, and researcher, I helped many people unlock their potential and achieve greatness in their lives. In my leadership development training programs, several senior leaders often asked me the following question: What makes some individuals excel as extraordinary achievers? In fact, there are some unique habits, principles, and practices that convert ordinary individuals into extraordinary achievers. Since I am on a sabbatical currently, I decided to author a book to help people identify those habits and practices to achieve greatness in their lives. Additionally, my role throughout my life has been to inspire people to excel as extraordinary achievers and leaders in their lives.

I am mostly self-taught because I don’t have any mentor or guru. During my 35 years of diversified experience that includes military, teaching, training, research, and consultancy, I read thousands of books and inspired many people in the world with my physical interaction, books, and articles on social media.

What Makes Some People Stand Out?

Do you know what makes some people stand out from others? Do you know what habits are essential to achieving greatness in your life? Do you know why some leaders stand taller beyond their lifetimes? The answer to all these questions is that they possess some unique habits and adopt unconventional approaches and practices.  In fact, there is a pattern of unique practices and habits that convert ordinary individuals into extraordinary individuals and extraordinary individuals into inspiring individuals. When you understand and apply them effectively you can unlock your hidden potential to achieve greatness in your life.

Extraordinary people are ordinary people with extraordinary attitude and habits. They do things with a different approach and attitude. They don’t let events control them. Instead, they control the events and take things forward. They don’t blame circumstances. Instead, they work with what they have with a positive attitude. They make things fall into place. Succinctly, they make things happen and excel as extraordinary achievers.

Ignite Your Spark

We all have spark within us but we seldom understand how to ignite it. When we know how to ignite our spark, we will be able to unlock our hidden potential and achieve extraordinary success. Here are 21 habits, practices and tools to ignite your spark and unleash the leader in you:
  1. Acquire Self-Awareness
  2. Discover Your Biological Clock
  3. Be an Early Riser
  4. Exercise Every Day
  5. Acquire Internal Locus of Control
  6. Visualize Effectively
  7. Equip with Affirmations
  8. Use Your Internal Dialogue Effectively
  9. Strengthen Your Subconscious Mind
  10. Journal Regularly
  11. Read Avidly
  12. Improve Your Memory
  13. Improve Your Concentration
  14. Practice Yoga Daily
  15. Perform Underwater Meditation
  16. Practice for 21 Days
  17. Cultivate Mindfulness
  18. Acquire Emotional Intelligence
  19. Take Feedback
  20. Be Persistent
  21. Learn, Unlearn and Relearn

Treat these 21 tools as 21 bricks of your brand. Cement these bricks to build an everlasting leadership brand by practicing regularly to fast-track your career and provide meaning to your life.  Malcolm Gladwell emphasizes that the key to high levels of success in any field is practicing a specific task for a total of about 10,000 hours. Hence, invest your precious time on your passionate areas for 10,000 hours to become a successful professional and leader.

Help locate the fish. Show the opportunities as most people grope in darkness. Help people discover their talents and ask them to build skills around their talents. Inspire them to unlock their potential.

Conclusion

A study by Dr. John Hagelin shows that we are using at most 5% of the potential of the human mind. 100% of human potential is the result of proper education. So imagine a world where people are using their full mental and emotional potential. To conclude, the human mind is very powerful and you must know how to channel it effectively. By acquiring these habits and adopting time tested tools and techniques you can unleash your hidden power to achieve greatness in your life.

“The CEOs with Military Background and Leadership Development Training Programs” ―Professor M.S.Rao

“The best CEOs I know are teachers, and at the core of what they teach is strategy.” ― Michael Porter

There are some CEOs who are passionate about building next generation of leaders. They walked their talk and shared their knowledge through teaching and training programs to their employees. The list of such CEOs includes Jack Welch of General Electric, Roger A. Enrico and Indra Nooyi of PepsiCo. Roger Enrico became a leadership educator after leaving as CEO. It is obvious that leaders build leaders, not followers.  Similarly, there are some military officers who became successful CEOs. It shows the significance of military training to become successful leaders and CEOs.

When CEOs are directly involved in training and grooming their employees as leaders, the employees become more engaged and loyal to their organizations. It also conveys a strong message to the senior management that the organization is committed to developing its employees as leaders. The brand image of the company goes north direction. Hence, CEOs must involve in leadership development training programs directly as it indicates company’s commitment to learning and development.  Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric (GE) walked his talk. He had a vision and was passionate about sharing his knowledge and building leaders. Hence, CEOs must demonstrate their vision, passion and commitment to leadership development training programs.

Advantages of Leadership Development Training Programs

There are several advantages associated with leadership development training programs. They update the knowledge, skills and abilities of employees. They enhance employees’ performance and productivity to achieve organizational excellence and effectiveness. They improve the image and brand of the organizations. They keep the leadership pipeline ready to enable the second rung of leaders to be ready to take over senior leadership positions in case of any eventuality.

CEOs with Military Background

When you observe CEOs such as Alex Gorsky of Johnson & Johnson; Robert A. McDonald  of Proctor and Gamble; Robert Myers of Casey’s General Store; James A. Skinner of Walgreens; Herb Vest of H.D. Vest; Richard Kinder of Kinder Morgan; Ken Hicks of FootLocker; Sumner Redstone of Viacom; Daniel Akerson of General Motors; Clayton M. Jones of Rockwell Collins;  Tom Dent of Lumetra; Lowell McAdam of Verizon;  James Mulva of ConocoPhillips; Robert J. Stevens of Lockheed Martin; Frederick W. Smith of FedEx, it is obvious that they all came from military background.

Does Military Training Make Better Leaders?

The military training equips soldiers with several qualities such as leadership, emotional intelligence, team building, communication skills, confidence, adaptability and fraternity. Since the soldiers work on under grueling conditions, they excel as strong leaders. In fact, testing times make them as tough leaders. They are filled with energy and enthusiasm with a heart to serve others. They are strategic thinkers, trustworthy, risk takers, learn lessons from failures, and motivate others where there is no light at the end of the tunnel. They are highly focused hitting the bull’s eye. However, military leaders must develop flexibility to adjust with civilians. They are straightforward and often lack tact and diplomacy.

Although we cannot conclude that the CEOs with military background alone will succeed, the fact is that the military background is definitely an asset.  Hence, success rate of leaders and CEOs with military background is higher basically because they build trust in others and stick to their commitments. Additionally, their confidence and communication help them stand out from others.

Dr. Irwin Mark Jacobs, founding chairman and CEO emeritus for Qualcomm once remarked, “A great leader must lead by example, not by fiat. He or she must set an example of integrity, of openness to new ideas, of understanding details as well as the larger picture, of communicating well, and of not shooting the messenger when a problem arises but helping find a solution.” Most of the military leaders possess these qualities thus becoming successful leaders and CEOs.

“Where visionaries can be good at persuasion, CEOs are good at wielding authority. Visionaries transcend organizations, resources, and current realities, while CEOs master them.” ― Bob Metcalfe
