It illustrates with inspiring examples of great global leaders including Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, and Nelson Mandela. It emphasizes on Mahatma Gandhi’s twin principles of truth and non-violence. It implores to replace religion with love to build a better world. It implores to love your mother but don’t hate another person’s mother.

Welcome to Soft Leadership: An Innovative Leadership Style to Resolve Conflicts Amicably through Soft Skills and Negotiation Skills to Achieve Global Stability, Peace and Prosperity. It is an extension of my award-winning published book, Soft Leadership: Make Others Feel More Important. The previous book introduced soft leadership from scholarly perspective. The present book which you hold on your hands is for both scholars and practitioners to see soft leadership in action with examples and illustrations of international leaders. It explores soft leadership from the perspective of global stability, peace, and prosperity.

Presently people across the globe are getting impatient, intolerant, and agitated on others on petty issues.  It appears to be lack of respect toward others’ religions, regions, races, languages, ethnicities, cultures, and communities. Additionally, the aspirations and expectations of all stakeholders are rising rapidly. For instance, children demand more from parents; students demand more from educators; subordinates demand more from superiors; employees demand more from employers; followers demand more from leaders; and people demand more from nations. In fact, people are becoming more rights-oriented rather than duty-oriented.  They must remember John F. Kennedy’s quote, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.”

There must be a shift in the mindset of the people. There must be a need for tolerance and respect toward others. People must be duty-oriented rather than rights-oriented. Empathy is the answer to several pressing global challenges. Empathy is the ability to step into the shoes of others and look at the issues from others’ perspective. However, presently people rarely empathize with others.  When we empathize with others most of the global challenges and conflicts can be resolved quickly and easily. Through empathy, we can put an end to intolerance, impatience, and instability. Through empathy, we can resolve several global challenges amicably. In fact, empathy is essential for global peace, prosperity, stability, and security. 

Some people resort to violence to settle their scores. Some countries wage wars to settle their long-pending issues. In fact, violence is not the solution to several global issues. Ralph Waldo Emerson rightly remarked, “Peace cannot be achieved through violence, it can only be attained through understanding.”  Hence, people must shed their violent attitude and respect others through empathy and understanding.


Global Conflicts

People often use force to settle their scores resulting in conflicts and nations use their military force resulting in wars. They hardly understand the fact that there is always room for dialogue and discussion to resolve their vexing issues. Some nations go to war on pride and some leaders declare war to show their strength and supremacy to others. Some religions declare war on others to show their supremacy. Some nations go to war to divert attention from their internal challenges. Likewise, there are many reasons for alarming conflicts and wars globally.


Need for Soft Leadership

The present global scenario calls for new leadership perspective emphasizing on respect to all regions, religions, communities, creeds, and ethnicities. It calls for a new leadership perspective involving negotiation and persuasion with an emphasis on empathy. It calls for partnership, not followership.  Hence, it is essential to emphasize innovative leadership “soft leadership” to resolve various conflicts globally through discussion, dialogue, persuasion, and negotiation. This new leadership perspective can also be used to lead people assertively; to turnaround ailing global organizations; and to achieve organizational excellence and effectiveness.

Lead Your Life with Purpose and Meaning

Welcome to   Short Stories on Life Leadership: Life is Beautiful!  As you are aware that leadership is close to my heart, I highlight life leadership in this book through storytelling. It explores various aspects on life leadership such as attitude, empathy, perceptions, personality, communication and behavior. It helps you understand life from practical perspective. It shares messages at the end of each story to lead your life with purpose and meaning. 


Strive for Happiness, not Success

Everyone craves for happiness and success. However, presently, most people prefer success to happiness which is not in the right direction. In fact, people love to be happy with their lives. At the same time, they cannot ignore the human need to be recognized by others. In order to be recognized, people often crave for success. During the course of their success journey they sacrifice many aspects and at the end, they realize that they lost so much including happiness. It is like losing too much for too little. They must learn the fact that life is very short and they must make it sweet. They must treat success as a journey to achieve the end of happiness. If the priorities are changed, there is no meaning to life.

There are people who work hard only for satisfaction, not for recognition. They treat satisfaction as an end product and recognition as a byproduct. They don’t work with an intention to get recognition as their basic drive is satisfaction. They work hard and smart irrespective of the outcome.  They strive hard to achieve outcome through excellence. Finally, they achieve everything including satisfaction, success and recognition.  Hence, it is always desirable to strive for satisfaction rather than recognition and success. To summarize, success is something far away whereas happiness is in your hands.  There are people who search for stones leaving gems at home.  They regret at the end of their lives.  Hence, emphasize on means, not ends. Emphasize on satisfaction, not success. Emphasize on journey, not destination. Remember the sage words of T. S. Eliot, “The journey not the arrival matters.”


Reflect Regularly

“By three methods we may learn wisdom: first, by reflection, which is noblest; second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third, by experience, which is the most bitter.” - Confucius

People are busy with their hectic lives. They are busy with their challenges. Some are busy facing cut-throat competition. Some are busy with their financial or family problems. Likewise, everyone is busy in this world. Before the advent of internet technology, people had a lot of time and spent with their family members, friends and neighbors. They enjoyed more of human relations. But presently people are beset with lots of challenges and they don’t find any time to reflect on various things including life.  If they reflect regularly, they can lead their lives with meaning. Dorothy Canfield Fisher rightly remarked, “If we would only give the same amount of reflection to what we want out of life that we give to the question of what to do with two weeks’ vacation, we would be startled at our false standards and the aimless procession of our busy days.”

One day when I was going by a car to deliver a leadership training program, the car developed a technical problem. I have the habit of reading newspapers and books during my travelling time. After completion of reading newspapers, I take a book and read. But due to the car breakdown, the car driver went outside and phoned someone for assistance. I phoned to my training consultant and informed him that I would be delayed for sometime due to car breakdown. My consultant relieved me by rescheduling my training program accordingly.

It was highway and I came outside the car to have a glance at the nature. I started to enjoy the nature. The driver informed me that he would get the problem fixed within an hour.  I was thinking what to do at that time. I wanted to read a book as I am a professional book reviewer for several prestigious international journals but I did not have any mood to read the book. Then I started reflecting. My mind was still for sometime as I was suddenly free from activities. I thought for some time and started to reflect. Fresh ideas flashed in my mind. It was really an amazing feeling as I got lots of great ideas in my mind. I felt energetic and captured the ideas gradually. I started to think about my life; how to provide meaning to my life; and how to make this world better with my knowledge and experience. I also got great ideas to focus on niche areas that have not been explored by others. I captured all those thoughts on my note book as I have the habit of maintaining a journal. I decided to work in a new direction on new triggers to lead a more meaningful life to make a difference in the lives of others.  Hence, it is essential to reflect once in a while to recharge your mind with new ideas and insights not only to achieve success but also to provide meaning to your life. Remember the sage words of Aristotle, “The ultimate value of life depends upon awareness and the power of contemplation rather than upon mere survival.”


Lead Your Life with Purpose

You can provide purpose to your life if you can discover your passion and unlock your potential to make a difference in the lives of others. Write down how you want to lead your personal, professional and social life and trifurcate your goals accordingly with actionable steps.  You must bring the change the way the world wants to provide meaning to your life.  You must align your inherent talents and acquired skills as per the expectations of your existing times. The world appreciates your actions, not excuses. Hence, get into action and take responsibility to lead your life with purpose. 


How to Lead Your Life Greatly?

You must learn how to lead your life with purpose to make it beautiful and great.  Here are some actionable steps to lead your life greatly:
  • Give your best to others. Remember, what goes around comes around.
  • Spend 24 minutes visualizing the day ahead – one minute for each hour of the day.
  • Count your blessings, not blisters.
  • Be on the move, towards higher levels of fearlessness and creativity.
  • Look at life for opportunities, not obstacles.
  • Shed limitations to raise your bar.
  • Have an attitude of gratitude.
  • Don’t brood over your unpleasant past and don’t worry about future. In contrast, learn to live in present.
  • Learn lessons from your mistakes and move on.
  • Don’t expect from others as you don’t know their constraints.
  • Make others feel important.
  • Eat balanced diet.
  • Exercise your body regularly.
  • Enjoy good sleep regularly.
  • Balance your personal, professional and social life.
  • Strive for peace, not happiness. Happiness depends on external stimulants whereas peace comes from within.

Appreciate the fact that a young person looks at the future, middle aged person looks at the present, and old person looks at the past. All these three stages are an integral part of human life. In the following chapters, you enjoy reading short stories from various perspectives of life to make your life beautiful and great.

We celebrate New Year today. On the eve of this New Year, we must take a pledge to promote fraternity and universal brotherhood. To inculcate universal brotherhood, we must create a feeling that entire world is one family. In India, we call it Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.  Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (From "vasudhā", the earth; "ēva" = indeed is; and "kutumbakam", family;) is a Sanskrit phrase which means "the world is one family." Additionally, Indian Vedic literature believes in universal brotherhood and peace.  It supports strongly in peace and prosperity.


Growing Intolerance Globally

There are a number of reasons for the current growing intolerance and conflicts globally. Here are some of them. People are very impatient. They want immediate results. They lack patience and perseverance. They fail to empathize with others. They try to prove their point right rather than looking the points from others’ perspective. They want to resort to short cuts leading to conflicts.  They want to win their case through win-lose, not through win-win.


Need for Soft Leadership

The present global scenario calls for new leadership perspective emphasizing on respect to all regions, religions, communities, creeds and ethnicities. It calls for a new leadership perspective involving negotiation and persuasion with an emphasis on empathy. It calls for partnership, not followership.  Hence, this article emphasizes on innovative leadership “soft leadership” to resolve various conflicts globally through discussion, dialogue, persuasion and negotiation. This new leadership perspective can also be adopted to ensure fraternity and universal brotherhood.


What is Soft Leadership?

Leadership basically depends on three aspects - how you communicate with others; how you make decisions; and how you take action. When you can execute these three activities effectively you become a successful leader. However, to evolve as a soft leader, you must communicate with an emphasis on soft skills; make decisions by blending your head, heart and gut; and take action keeping the ground realities and goals in your view without compromising people-orientation. Hence, soft leadership can be defined as the process of setting goals; influencing people through persuasion; building strong teams; negotiating them with a win-win attitude; respecting their failures; handholding them; motivating them constantly; aligning their energies and efforts; recognizing and appreciating their contribution in accomplishing organizational goals and objectives with an emphasis on soft skills. It is based on the right mindset, skill set, and toolset.

Soft leadership helps unite people of all religions, races, creeds, and communities into one platform. It helps greatly to unite people globally into one platform. It helps convert the world into one family.

When we treat entire world as one family, all the conflicts in the world will be resolved amicably.  When we think that we are the brothers and sisters of the world, all problems in the world will be resolved. The differences usually arise when we don’t treat others with respect. The differences arise when we look at differences, not commonalities.


Conclusion

Hatred doesn’t have any place in the world. Love is the only way to connect with world. It breaks all barriers including cultural, racial, religious and community barriers.

We are all the branches of one tree. The root is one. The world is our root, branches are the nations and leaves are the people. Let us appreciate that we all have originated from one place and we all belong to one family. To summarize, the whole world is one family. We are separated by regions, nations, and boarders. People remain the same at the core level. The children are born innocent but the environment brings them up as per their faiths, regions, religions and nations. Hence, let us focus on bringing the children with a global mindset with a universal brotherhood to achieve the ultimate objective of global peace and prosperity.
