““To Serve Is To Live” ―Frances Hesselbein, Marshall Goldsmith and Alan Mulally” ―Professor M.S.Rao

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” ―Mahatma Gandhi

I have cross many leaders who are passionate about serving others. I read James Strock’s award-winning book Serve to Lead: Your Transformational 21st Century Leadership System URL http://www.amazon.com/Serve-Lead-Transformational-Century-Leadership-ebook/dp/B0040SXSWK. I wrote articles on Robert Greenleaf’s servant leadership and on servanthood.  Right from my childhood, I am fascinated by words ‘servant, servanthood, and making a difference in the lives of people’. I served in Indian Air Force for a few years as I had love for uniform and was passionate about serving my nation.  I entered into teaching profession because of my passion to serve students, and to make a difference in their lives. I created Vision 2030 to build one million students as global leaders by 2030 URL: http://professormsraovision2030.blogspot.in/2014/12/professor-m-s-raos-vision-2030-one_31.html    I read lots of books on leaders who have a heart to serve others including Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King Jr, and Nelson Mandela to name a few.

I came across Frances Hesselbein who dedicated her life to serve people. She rose from volunteer troop leader to CEO and held the position of CEO for 13 years. She says, “Leadership is a matter of how to be, not how to do it.” She believes that leadership is about giving back.  She received Presidential Medal of Freedom from Bill Clinton in 1998 for her work with the Girl Scouts of the USA. She has a special affinity for the U.S. Army’s leadership slogan “Be, Know, and Do.”  Abraham Lincoln is her inspiration.

I am fascinated by Marshall Goldsmith who has a kind heart to serve society and he shares his knowledge with the world free of charge on his library. He is very simple and humble person who provides endorsements graciously for international authors including me.  He is the father of Executive Coaching.

I am fascinated by Alan Mulally who led two American iconic brands – Boeing and Ford Motor Company successfully. He turned around Ford when it was on the brink of disaster and became a turnaround hero.  When Alan retired from Ford in 2014, Fortune magazine ranked him as the third-greatest leader in the world, behind Pope Francis and Angela Merkel. The message from all these three leaders is – to serve is to live.

The leaders who keep people before profit made them as great leaders globally.  Hence, we must learn lessons from great leaders, and have a heart to serve others without expecting anything in return. It gives us great satisfaction when people grow because of our contribution. Whether we are recognized by them or not is immaterial. We must leave our leadership legacy. To conclude, we must contribute our best to the world without expecting anything in return. Because to serve is to live!

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” ― Winston Churchill

“How do Leaders Make their Decisions?” ―Professor M.S.Rao

“A good decision is based on knowledge and not on numbers.” ―Plato

Making decisions is not an easy task.  Although everyone wants to succeed in their decisions, the outcome may not be as per their expected objectives. At times there is a mismatch between expected objectives and achieved outcomes.  Why does it happen? Are people not confident to make decisions? Why do most people fail to make right decisions? What makes people to make right choices? Hence, let us explore in this article to make right decisions.

When you have the entire information, it is possible to make decisions easily. You can interpret the information and make a few right choices to execute. When you don’t have any information, it is tough to make decisions. You cannot interpret as you don’t have any information. In this case, you have to make decisions under uncertainty which is a major challenge. When you look at leaders at the operational level they make decisions based on the available information and their experience. When you look at leaders at the strategic level, they make decisions based on their gut and intuition.

Senior leaders and CEOs organize regular meetings to understand the challenges from grass root level. They listen to their employees and their challenges. They throw the challenges in the meeting to all members and brainstorm. After listening to all sources, and taking their viewpoints into consideration, they make decisions based on their intuition, experience and gut. They know pretty well that all decisions might not go well. They are prepared to take risk and implement their decisions. They take feedback from their decisions and reflect a lot. They learn lessons from their wrong decisions and move forward with remedial action. For senior leaders, everyday is a challenge and every challenge is an opportunity to make decisions and learn lessons.

To conclude, decision making is not an easy task. There are a number of aspects to take into consideration such as collecting information from all sources, interpreting the information, consulting the concerned people, taking their viewpoints, building a consensus and implementing the decision. Additionally, it is essential to take feedback and corrective steps to achieve the desired objectives.

“Whenever you’re making an important decision, first ask if it gets you closer to your goals and or farther way. If the answer is closer, pull the trigger. If it’s father away, make a different choice. Conscious choice making is a critical step in making your dreams a reality.” ―Jillian Michaels

“Clean the Minds of Indians First to Create a ‘Clean India’ (Swatchh Bharat)”– Professor M.S.Rao

“I will not let anyone walk through my mind with their dirty feet.” ―Mahatma Gandhi

Indian Prime Minster Narendra Modi started Swatchh Bharat (clean India) mission on October, 02, 2014 on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The mission is expected to be completed by October 02, 2019 to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birthday. The objective is to create a hygiene India.  The movement is catching up across the country and the political parties are competing with each other to display their serious commitment to make India a clean country.   But I feel that it is essential to clean the minds of Indians first. It is essential to replace cynicism with optimism; negative attitude with positive attitude; procrastination with punctuality; parochialism with fraternity; regionalism with nationalism.

It is observed that film stars and celebrities clean the street to take photographs with their brooms and walk away with publicity. It has become a brand building exercise to them rather than adding a true value to create a clean India.  At times, political parties ask film stars and celebrities to create awareness in the citizens. Any movement must start from the hearts of the people, not from their minds to make it a great success.  There must a collaborative effort to clean the minds and hearts of Indians. In fact, former Prime Minster of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew cleaned streets long ago to make Singapore a clean country. He was a visionary leader who built a great country in the world despite dearth of natural resources.

India is a country of many contrasts. India is a land of unity in diversity. We have different languages, religions, ethnicities, castes, cultures, and communities. What is required is to respect all communities keeping secularism as paramount.

The dress we wear is important. At the same time our minds and hearts must be pure and pious. They must be free from pollution. Hence, let us cultivate a positive, right, and strong attitude to make India as a great country in the world.  Remember, mental disease is more dangerous than physical disease. When our minds are strong we can overcome any kind of diseases. Hence, ensure Swatchh Bharat not only physically but also mentally, emotionally and spiritually to build a great India. Jai Hind!

"We reached Mars. No PM or Minister went. It was the people who did it, our scientists who did it. So can't we create a Clean India?" ―Narendra Modi, Indian Prime Minister
